The Madison High School girls basketball team poses with the championship trophy Wednesday after winning the first Siena Heights High School Holiday Tournament.
It was the host team taking home the title in the first ever Siena Heights University Holiday Tournament.
The Madison High School girls basketball team etched their names as the inaugural champions of the Holiday Tournament on Wednesday with a 41-23 victory over Lenawee Christian.
Madison’s Brittney Benschoter was also the tournament’s first Most Valuable Player as she helped the Trojans in a multitude of ways. Benschoter was not the leading scorer or rebounded but her presence was felt on both the offensive and defensive end for Madison.
“It was important for these girls to put their names as the first ever champions of this tournament,” Madison coach Rick McNeil said. “They sacrificed some of their Christmas break to practice and prepare to play in this and it showed. As for Brittney, she just does so many things for our team its hard to ever take her out. The people of this tournament saw the impact she had for us and they know basketball well enough to see how important she is for us. She really earned this honor.”
Madison jumped out to a 13-6 after the first quarter behind solid play from reserve guard Brittany Kelly. Kelly had three steals and four points in the final two minutes to help the Trojans to the lead.
Madison then used an 11-1 second quarter to launch themselves to the victory.
Katie Bird came off the bench for Madison and also gave good minutes as the Trojans looked to make up for the loss of Sabrina Kelly to injury. Bird got her evening started with an assist to Sam Davis who knocked down the mid-range jumper for a 15-6 lead.
“Katie and Brittany did a nice job of stepping up today,” McNeil said. “They gave us some good minutes and helped us build some momentum. They both played solid defense and gave us a good lift.”
The Trojans (6-1) continued to build the lead as Ashley Bussing and Benschoter each got lay ins before Benschoter hit Kelsey Hudson who pocketed the 3-ball for a 22-7 advantage.
LCS got its only point of the quarter with 1:46 left as LeAnn Porter split a pair of free throws.
Madison capped the quarter with a lay in by Kayela Gilbert leading to a 24-7 halftime advantage.
“We hit these dry spells and we can’t score,” Cougar coach Joe Long said. “We didn’t take a lot of three’s and were getting the ball inside but when you miss those easy ones it’s hard to win.”
LCS was much more competitive in the second half thanks in large part to Brooklyn Wingfield and Andrea Sebby. After Wingfield was held scoreless in the first half and Sebby had just two points, LCS looked to its seniors for a lift.
Sebby and Wingfield combined for 11 points and 17 rebounds for LCS who trailed 33-16 after three quarters of play.
In the fourth, Madison was able to coast to the win as Bussing and Davis scored six of the teams nine fourth-quarter points en route to the win.
Madison was led by Gilbert’s nine points while Brittany Kelly added nine points and three steals. Bussing added eight points and seven assists while Davis had six points and seven boards. Benschoter finished with four points, six boards, five assists and three steals.
LCS was led by Sebby’s five points and 12 boards while Wingfield added six and five.
