No Friends In Basketball, Just Opponents - UConn Women's Basketball, Connecticut Sun & WNBA Blog

UConn coach Geno Auriemma has met thousands of people and coached hundreds of them, many of whom get Christmas cards from his family and eat dinner in his home.

When he discovered his first-round game in the Philadelphia Regional would be against Hartford Sunday at Gampel Pavilion, he shrugged his shoulders and gave one of his it is what it is looks.

Top Picks

NCAA WomenÂ’s Basketball Tournament (11 a.m., ESPN2) After winning a school-record 72 straight games, all by double-digits, Geno AuriemmaÂ’s Connecticut Huskies are expected to have a cakewalk to the Riverwalk in San Antonio, site of the Final Four. ThatÂ’s where a possible semifinal against Tennessee looms, as Pat SummittÂ’s Lady Vols have rebounded from last yearÂ’s first-round exit to garner a No. 1 seed and restore order in womenÂ’s hoops. Pat leads Geno 8-6 in the all-time NCAA-title race, but 62 other teams (including top seeds Stanford and Nebraska) are out to trump that story line, beginning with this weekendÂ’s wall-to-wall first-round action.

But few choose helmet that offers better protection

FORT MYERS, Fla. — One afternoon last season, not long after Justin Morneau suffered what would end up being a season-ending concussion and just one day after he told reporters that when he did come back he almost certainly would wear a batting helmet designed to withstand significantly greater impact than the helmet most players wear, the first baseman's teammates pulled a little prank.

Ivory Soap and Foot Massages: Lady Gaga Spills Her Beauty Secrets

It’s hard to think of someone as glam as Lady Gaga mulling over a makeup bag. But in the latest issue of PEOPLE , the superstar singer opens up about her surprisingly normal beauty routines (hint: the last thing she does before bed is brush her teeth!). Gaga, who calls her mother Cynthia Germanotta and Princess Diana her beauty influences, says her mom taught her to wash her face with Ivory soap. But that doesn’t mean the singer always follows directions. When asked how many nights per week she goes to bed wearing makeup, she replies, “Seven. That is not good for your skin, but I’m blessed with good genes.” What is good for her skin? The sunblock she carries around in her beauty bag. “I don’t like to tan my face because it’s bad for wrinkles,” she explains. The natural brunette, known for her now white-blonde locks, says she misses her dark hair when she has to “get a chemical haircut because my blonde hair is falling out.” And that’s not the only damage fame has done: she admits that she’s dying for a foot massage, to relieve her achy feet after all those days spent walking in sky-high heels. But Gaga — whose favorite fragrances growing up were Versace Baby Rose Jeans and Revlon’s Jean Naté — says that above all, the best beauty tip is to be yourself. “Just go with your gut,” she urges. “Whenever you try to be someone else, it’s boring.” Perhaps that’s why she’s skipping mascara and fake lashes these days. “I think it’s more modern not to wear [either]. I just wear eyeliner.” For more on Gaga’s beauty secrets, pick up the March 28 issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now. – Rennie Dyball and Samantha McIntyre

Days of Roses ed. Declan Ryan and Malene Engelund

Days of Roses has established itself over the last two years as an exciting series of readings in London. Taking its name from Tom Waits’ song ‘Martha’ (‘And those were the days of roses, poetry and prose’), as a date in the informal literary calendar it has experienced a swell in popularity, with organisers Declan Ryan and Malene Engelund creating a liveliness and warmth that sets the night apart from similar events in the capital. Although Ryan and Engelund completed the Royal Holloway Creative Writing MA course, it hardly belongs to any collegiate coterie; from its inception, Days of Roses has offered a wide pool of participants. Part of the success of the reading nights is that it never feels as if there is a headline act: it treads the balance between an inclusive and a broad-reaching line-up, with well-known names regularly slotted in between novices. Perhaps this is what lends a slight festival-like feel to many of the nights rather that the stillness offered by other readings: snug rather than starchy, couched in talent rather than bombast, the readings are a pleasure to attend and it was with great interest that I picked up a copy of the new

Scout.com: Turning annual draft beating into perspective

How so?

Try this exchange between Ryan and host Darren Smith in talking about the quarterback class in the upcoming NFL draft

Smith: “Ryan Mallet’s the quarterback out of Arkansas – everybody says this guy has the potential to be the next Ryan Leaf. I wonder what Ryan Leaf feels about Ryan Mallett being called the next Ryan Leaf.”

Hyde5: Is Mallett the best QB prospect?

1. Ryan Mallett is a legitimate possibility for the Dolphins in this draft. I liked it when his lukewarm stats at the end of games became a talking point. I short-term loved it when he channeled his inner-Ryan Leaf at the NFL combine. Only by those things becoming Topic A around him and turning off several teams would the Dolphins have a chance at landing him.

Part I: The first-pick would'ves, could'ves and should'ves in Cowboys draft history.

Some of the Thoughts That Run Through an Oversized, Bald Head:

Check out a new column by Jeff Sullivan in every issue of Dallas Cowboys Star Magazine. For subscription information please click here.

Everyone loves what-ifs in terms of going back to previous NFL Drafts. Perhaps the most memorable one of the last 15 or so years is that supposedly at least half of the league's general managers would've taken Ryan Leaf in favor of Peyton Manning back in 1998. What a bizarre top-4 that was, huh? Manning will obviously be a Hall of Famer. Leaf was arguably the biggest bust in the history of the draft, finishing with a 50.0 rating, 36 interceptions and 14 TD passes. The third pick was defensive end Andre Wadsworth, who played a grand total of 36 games and registered eight sacks. However, the No. 4 pick was Charles Woodson, who is also destined for Canton, possibly a first-year inductee like Manning. That was also the memorable Randy Moss draft, as he dropped to 21st because of non-football related issues.

Turning annual draft beating into perspective

WHAT A DIFFERENCE a year makes. When 1090-AM radio in San Diego called Ryan Leaf last spring asking for an interview, both sides were a little uneasy. After all, it had been a decade since Ryan had talked with anyone in San Diego media circles. Nowadays, Ryan is a periodic guest on 1090. And for good reason. His 23 minutes on air the other day, for example, were pure gold.

Mary Ann Esposito: Art of the Artichoke

Nasty. That's how so many people describe artichokes. Many are afraid of those thorny, tough leaves that, if one is not careful when handling them, could require a Band-Aid or two.

But, in reality, artichokes are one of the glories of spring and fall. Their color hues range from delightful purples to all shades of green. Artichokes are members of the thistle family, and there are many varieties. The most common variety for us is the Globe artichoke: big, meaty and thorny.

For all of her statistical milestones, national accolades and basketball skills, Courtney Vandersloot's greatest strength as a point guard remains nothing more complicated than her ability to make everyone around her that much better.

So it was that the best point guard in the country decided there was one more player she could make better.

It's that time of the year again. It seems like yesterday I was watching theSan Francisco Giantsstroll down Market St. in their decked out cable cars. In fact, I still remember the odd mixture of moisture in my eyes and joy as the Giants celebrated one of the most unlikely championship seasons in a while.

From closer-by-committee to committee of closers

Really, the whole experiment lasted just three months. And in relative terms, the whole thing was eons ago.

Dustin Pedroiawas in college. Daniel Bard was in high school.Terry Franconawas not yet the Boston manager at a time when the 2003Red Soxdabbled in the dark art of a closer-by-committee, an experiment in relief alchemy that is now punishable by stoning.

Wheeler briefly visits the minors

E-mail | Print | Comments () Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff March 16, 2011 04:14 PM

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Dan Wheeler made the two-mile journey down Edison Road to pitch two innings for Class A Greenville today.

It was a successful trip. Wheeler faced seven batters and put only one on base, that coming in the first inning when he hit a man on a 3-1 pitch. He was otherwise perfect, throwing 11 of his 18 pitches for strikes against Baltimore prospects.

2011 MLB Preview: AL Central

The White Sox might have the only rotation that could compare to the vaunted Phillies -- Gavin Floyd, John Danks, Mark Buehrle, Jake Peavy and Edwin Jackson. Peavy tore a tendon in his right arm last July and may be questionable to start the season. The bullpen will not have Bobby Jenks for Ozzie Guillen to kick around anymore. Instead, the No. 1 pick from last June, left-handed pitcher Chris Sale, may just come in and close games. The club has also added Jesse Crain from the Twins.

New England Native Dan Wheeler Excited to Pitch for Red Sox, Ready to Help Team Win (Video)

The big three of Jonathan Papelbon , Daniel Dard and Bobby Jenks have been getting all the hype this spring training, but Rhode Island native Dan Wheeler 's homecoming will likely be just as important to the Red Sox' success this season.

Tomahawk Nation

.  For the second year in a row, FSU had an excellent offensive line that powered one of the best offenses in the country.  That line is schooled by Rick Trickett, considered one of the finest offensive line coaches in the country.  But that line wasn't very good to open the year as multiple starters missed time with injury.  Early in the year FSU allowed a sack once every 13 pass plays.  By the end of the year 'Noles improved it to one every 20, an excellent rate of sack prevention.

INTERNATIONAL BROTHERHOOD OF ELECTRICAL WORKERS v. MONSEES

Before Karen King Mitchell, Presiding Judge, Joseph M. Ellis, Judge and Victor C. Howard, Judge.

JOSEPH M. ELLIS, Judge.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union No. 814 ("the Union") appeals from a judgment entered against Anthony Monsees for the tortious removal of a sign maintained by the Union. The jury awarded the Union $15,000.00 in actual damages but the Union contends that it was entitled to statutorily enhanced damages or to submit the issue of punitive damages to the jury. Monsees cross-appeals, contending that the trial court erred in failing to enter a directed verdict against the Union because the evidence was not sufficient to establish trespass.

Dana White made Jake Shields (top) prove himself when he moved from Strikeforce to UFC. Will others face the same scrutiny?

Dana White used that phrase around 10,000 times as he spoke about the continued operation of Strikeforce during Saturday's surprise announcement that a subsidiary of UFC parent company Zuffa had purchased its mixed martial arts rival.

Brown-Attonito Slated for ‘TUF 13’ Finale

Two “Ultimate Fighter” alums will meet at the reality show’s 13th season finale, as Matt Brown and Rich Attonito are set to lock horns in a welterweight tilt.

Sherdog.com has confirmed the booking with a source close to one of the fighters. Heavy.com first reported the matchup on Monday.

While not officially announced by the promotion, “The Ultimate Fighter 13” Finale will likely take place June 4 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The evening’s main card will air on Spike TV and is expected to feature a lightweight attraction between former World Extreme Cagefighting 155-pound champion Anthony Pettis and divisional stalwart Clay Guida.

Kyle Kingsbury vs. Fabio Maldonado set for The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale | MMA News

A light heavyweight match-up has been added to for the UFC this June.

The main-event of the evening will put WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis against perennial contender Clay Guida. Zuffa Buys Strikeforce: Dana White Needs Scott Coker's Star Fighters

One thing I've found most curious since this weekend's shocking announcement that the UFC's parent company has purchased Strikeforce is a little nugget Dana White keeps dropping:

He mentioned it during the original breaking news interview with Ariel Helwani and he mentioned it during yesterday's official conference call discussing the acquisition. It's a rather curious statement considering the UFC brass has been attacking its roster with a scythe following numerous recent events. One uninspiring performance ( Gerald Harris ) or one untimely misstep (the very first UFC appearances for Willamy Freire and Antonio McKee ) can see you exiled from the Octagon. It's the weeding out of the roster, something every sports franchise must do from time-to-time.

Poll results: Who deserves the next shot at the UFC lightweight title?

The UFC's lightweight title picture is currently among the cloudiest of any of the promotion's seven weightclasses.

Sure, we know that current champion Frankie Edgar will face top challenger Gray Maynard at May's UFC 130 event, but after that, who's next?

In our latest MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) poll, we asked our readers to play UFC matchmaker and decide who should get the next crack at the 155-pound title. The response was overwhelmingly one-sided.

The Wisconsin Drama in the Maryland State House - Montgomery Village, MD Patch

Saqib Ali, a former Democratic member of the House of Delegates, says a bill in Annapolis is a union-busting tactic. Brandon Rippeon, a Republican candidate for Maryland's 6th congressional district, argues "right to work" gives workers more rights.

Ali's point:

As the drama in Madison unfolds, the whole nation is witness to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's attempts to destroy public sector unions. While there have been copycat attempts by governors in Indiana and Ohio, few people are aware that there is a similar (albeit lesser) move in Maryland to achieve some of the same goals. State Senator Allan Kittleman (R-Howard County) has proposed legislation to make Maryland a "Right To Work" state. Are these union-busting bills a good idea? For Maryland and for the entire nation, the answer is an unequivocal no.

Oakland Mills' Whittington commits to Georgetown

Jon Browne went to bed early Sunday, weary from attending a St. Patrick's Day parade and seeking a good night's rest before another day of school at Oakland Mills.

When the Scorpions coach awoke to seven missed calls and several text messages, he thought "what in the world happened last night?"

Browne quickly discovered what all the fuss was about. Greg Whittington, who led Oakland Mills to a 25-1 season, made an earlier-than-expected commitment, picking Georgetown over Clemson, DePaul, Maryland and Texas.

Their win against Easton in the Class 2A final was their 11th win during their last 13 games, though it was their semifinal win against Gwynn Park two days earlier that had the fans and coaches around the state buzzing.

Council President Kennedy, members of the Kokomo Common Council, elected officials, distinguished guests and citizens of Kokomo, welcome. I would especially like to welcome my wife Kelli, and my family and friends who took the time to be here tonight.

Our community has faced so many challenges over the past few years. More challenges than any of us could have imagined four years ago. Like most cities, foreclosures plagued Kokomo's neighborhoods. A depressed economy hit our automotive sector very hard. Our two largest employers went through bankruptcy reorganization, and many national commentators wrongly assumed that Chrysler would cease to exist.

Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt

I'm running around SXSW this weekend, so let's just get right to it. On the insightful side there were simply no standouts this week. A bunch of comments all were pretty closely ranked, so we'll go with the top two and then an editor's choice (which was ranked 4th). The comment that came in third in insightful dominated the funny category, so we'll revisit it in the second half of this post. First up, the winner this week is crade for his comment concerning why a music tax is a bad idea :

Katie Larmour: The Honey Trap

Can You Hear Me Now? - Palo Alto, CA Patch

The other day, I received a postcard from the city of Palo Alto. No, it didn’t say it was missing me (I’d been on vacation). In fact, the city is considering allowing AT&T to install all sorts of “antennas” in the neighborhood. Soon, if AT&T has its way, we’ll be a veritable forest of “antennas.”

How to find balance as a work-at-home mom

As a wife, a stay-at-home mom, a green parenting blogger and an author, I get asked all the time how I balance my life. It isn't easy. The fact is, whether you're a working mom or a stay-at-home mom, life can be tough to balance. So how do you find balance as a WAHM?

Here are a few tricks that make it easier:

NFL's ball rests in judge's court

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Welcome to The NFL Lockout.

As far back as May 2008, it became a possibility.

As recently as a week ago - when owners and players agreed to extend the deadline for a new collective bargaining agreement - Commissioner Roger Goodell made it sound avoidable.

And yet here we are: The country's most popular sport - water-cooler fodder for six months of Mondays; generator of more than $9 billion in annual revenues; responsible for the two most-watched programs in U.S. TV history, the 2010 and 2011 Super Bowls - is stuck in a holding pattern, thanks to its first work stoppage in nearly a quarter of a century.

Naming the Dead

The world’s attention has been riveted by the horrendous natural disaster in Japan. Naoto Kan, the Japanese prime minister, somberly described the damage wrought by the shattering earthquake and tsunami the nation’s “worst crisis since World War II.”

That tragedy — and no one can watch the video footage of what happened in northern Japan without a feeling of horror — is everywhere in the news. Another story, smaller in scale, but no less horrific, has received scant notice.  Late Friday night, some yet-to-be-identified people — the sort of people President Obama would doubtless describe as “lone extremists” — cut their way through a security fence and entered the Israeli town of Itamar in the West Bank. They then broke into the house of Udi and Ruth Fogel (36 and 35 years old, respectively), and stabbed them to death along with their 3-month-old daughter, Hadas, and two sons, Elad (3 years old) and Yoav (11).

The psychology of politics

The Facebook question was simple enough: Are you watching the State of the Union address tonight? Tell us what you think of the president's speech? What followed in the Comments was an interesting combination of political banter from many of the readers. Few of them actually answered the question. Inevitably, the insults were hurled and names were called.

Twitter and Facebook are the vital lifelines as Japan reels

As Japan grappled with the most fearsome natural disaster in its history, the social networks Twitter and Facebook stepped into the gap when other forms of communication broke down. With hundreds known to be dead and thousands more missing  the social networks - together with Skype - proved to be the vital link that kept families in touch in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami.  Google also had a big role to play.

Who knows best how to educate your kids?

In Montgomery County, school officials passed up at least$12 million because they didn't agree with Maryland state officials on how teachers should be evaluated.

State and county education officials in the D.C. area have been sparring with increased intensity recently over who has the best ideas for educating students, in bureaucratic battles that have put millions of dollars at stake and, some say, compromised children's learning.

Yes, we know it's hard enough to remember to back up your desktop, your laptop, your smartphone and your tablet, and now we want you to think about backing up your cloud-based email account, too.

This may seem like a drag, but we're not being paranoid. Recently, 150,000 Gmail users were left in the dark when a glitch in Google's system deleted all of their e-mail messages and disabled their Gmail accounts. Sure, only 0.02 percent of Gmail's user base was affected, but that 0.02 percent was pretty ticked off, to say the least.

I developed my man crush on Durant during his short stay at the University of Texas, and it has blossomed into full blown infatuation. The NBA needs 10 more just like him. Ten more who just shut up and play. Ten more who are the epitome of cool, calm and collected on the court at all times. Ten more with deadly inside and outside games. Ten more who are clutch. Ten more who bring you back when you're down, or step on your neck if you're struggling. The guy is just a stud. Period. And he's still only 22. Wednesday he dropped 34, grabbed 16 boards, hit a three with five seconds left with a hand in his grill to put it into overtime, and the bucket to give them the lead for good in OT. Ho-hum.

Skin allergy app: Preventice teamed up with the Mayo Clinic to create a web-based app and a native iPhone app called CARD System, which provides physicians and patients with access to information about chemicals, preservatives and fragrances in skin care products that cause allergic skin reactions. The apps will help patients find safe products and track allergic reactions should they occur. According to Preventice’s press release: A National Ambulatory Medical Care survey conducted in 1995 estimated that 8.4 million people visit their doctor because of skin allergies. The company also found that allergic reactions to skin care and cosmetic products were the second most frequent dermatologic diagnosis. CARD stands for Contact Allergen Replacement Database and it contains more than 8,100 known ingredients found in more than 7,000 commercial skin care products. Mayo originally created CARD in 1999, but the product release with Preventice is the first instance of it going mobile. More details

Was Brien Taylor really a “can’t miss” prospect? | New York Yankees blog, Yankees blog, A blog about the New York Yankees | The Yankee Analysts

Brien Taylor was a highly touted pitcher whose name most Yankee fans will know by the tragic story of the way his career was derailed. He was the first player selected overall in the 1991 draft, and was ranked the #1 prospect in the minors by Baseball America in 1993. But being selected first in the draft guarantees you nothing, as Bryan Bullington and Matt Bush can attest. So let’s take a look at the two seasons he pitched in the Yankee organization and see if we had someone who was truly exciting, the next big thing, or someone who was already showing troubling signs in his time in the minors. Here are his stats:
