Taste test to help determine schools' menu

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY , Va. — County students are deciding what food will be on their lunch menus next school year.

Prince William County Public Schools held their 21st annual food show at Hylton High School on Spriggs Road on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Another taste testing will occur Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the high school

The taste test is open to county students, parents, and school employees.

Up for the vote is 28 different entrées, which range from an egg and cheese breakfast burrito to fiesta lasagna, creamed spinach, and more.

Serena Suthers , director of the Prince William public school’s food services department , said the various foods have already been approved by dieticians and school officials for serving in cafeterias.

The food show , however, allows potential consumers of the food a chance to narrow the wide field of choices so only the best remain.

The results are tallied though an evaluation form that asks the voter their opinion of the food .

There is no limit to how much food could be added to next year’s menu from the available choices, Suthers said.

Registration is required prior to attending the free event. You can call the Office of School Food and Nutrition Services at 703-791-7314 to sign up. Only the first 1,000 people to register will be allowed to attend, according to the school system.

Suthers said the results from the food show will be released in the coming months.
