Donate your gently used medical equipment - Metro-east news - bnd.com

Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach will distribute the collected donated items to people in Haiti, Jamaica and more than 50 other countries.

"In the past three years, our efforts have allowed caregivers around the globe to receive shipments of medical equipment and supplies valued at over $24 million. These donations have improved access to quality health care in more than 58 countries," said Pamela Perlmutter, Mission Outreach Development spokeswoman.

"We strive to be good stewards of the environment while being a healing presence to the world. We look forward to partnering with HSHS Division (Southern Illinois) on the upcoming drive," she said.

Mission Outreach has distributed more than three million pounds of health care items to the needy throughout the world.

"This is an opportunity for people to clean out their closets and basements and provide needed equipment to people all over the world," said Mike Conley, director of Behavioral Health Services and event chairman. "What a wonderfully easy way to help those in need while being good stewards to the earth by recycling."

In light of the relief efforts under way in Japan, the U.S. Navy's Project Handclasp has been given permission by the Japanese government to bring aid to the country and items are being collected to help that country.

Among the needed items are hygiene kits. Each kit includes a hand towel, wash cloth, fingernail clippers (no toenail clippers), 3 ounce or larger bar of soap, single, wrapped adult-sized toothbrush, 4.5 ounce or larger tube of toothpaste, box of Band-Aids, a sturdy comb and a 1 gallon-size Ziploc bag.

Donations of supplies for the hygiene kits will be accepted during the medical equipment collection at each site.
