Given the transient nature of homeless shelters, with new residents showing up all the time, representing a continual source of infestation, fighting bedbugs is an ongoing struggle.

Hot Rods & Droids: A George Lucas Profile (Part 4)

Trevor Hogg profiles the career of legendary filmmaker George Lucas in the fourth of a six part feature... read parts one , two and three .

For over a decade filmmaker George Lucas had been developing a project which was a gender reversal of the Biblical story about Moses being hidden as a baby in the bulrushes. When asked to describe Willow (1988), Lucas called it “an adventure fantasy that takes place a long time ago in a mythical land.” Cast as the title character who becomes the guardian and defender of the wayward baby from an evil sorceress was Warwick Davis who made a name for himself playing the Ewok known as Wicket. “I was on holiday in southwest England when I got a call from George to come to Elstree – one of the major British studios – and audition for the part,” remembers Davis. “Actually, I did four auditions altogether; three in England and one in America.” The actor was competing against a lot of familiar faces. “There’s not all that much work for short people. Many of us worked for George as Ewoks in Return of the Jedi [1983]. So we knew each other. To this day I still run into blokes who say, ‘You know, I tried out for that bloody party!’”

P HILADELPHIA — When the [ team stats ] signed Bobby Jenks last winter to a two-year, $12 million contract, they expected him to bring another power arm with closer-like stuff to the back of their bullpen.

It hasn’t worked out that way.

Red Sox-Phillies diary: Lee dominates - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN

It's a World Series preview! Or maybe not. But let's do a running diary of Red Sox-Phillies, first of a big three-game series in Philly.

First inning

Our long national debate is over: David Ortiz will not be in the starting lineup. Look, Terry Francona is coming from the right place in saying he doesn’t want Ortiz’s bat to grow stale sitting for nine straight road games in National League parks, but I can’t envision a scenario in which Francona significantly weakens his team defensively at two positions. Maybe we’ll see "Big Papi" start a game or two, but Adrian Gonzalez rarely sits -- he’s missed only five games since 2007. I think the key will be to get Ortiz a pinch-hit at-bat at a key time, even if it means hitting for somebody besides the pitcher or catcher.

The Jack Lemmon Ten

With a career that spanned four decades, Jack Lemmon was one of America’s most beloved performers. Ten years after his death, we look back at 10 roles that best define him as an actor.

This film marked the big screen debut of Jack Lemmon . Studio head Harry Cohen worried Lemmon’s last name would prove too tempting for headline writers should the film receive bad reviews, and wanted him to change his name to “Lennon.” Jack Lemmon kept his real name on the screen by convincing the studio head that “Lennon” might too easily be confused with “Lenin” and give the film a whiff of Communism. Critics liked the film and it did moderately well at the box office, leading to the studio casting Lemmon and Judy Holliday together again that year.

How will Ohio's new budget affect average citizens? | Cincinnati.com | cincinnati.com

For Mamie Jackson of Evanston, the $55.7 billion two-year state budget that Ohio legislators are to approve this week could mean the difference between staying in her own house or having to move to a nursing home.

But to Juanita Albright, a waitress at Hathaway restaurant in downtown Cincinnati, the budget is for all practical purposes a non-issue in her life. With a modest annual income barely enough to have to pay Ohio income taxes, Albright will be largely unaffected, financially at least, by how state officials cut programs, reorder priorities and shuffle around billions of dollars in a voluminous document totaling nearly 5,000 pages.

PwC’s Dennis Nally Reminds Everyone That Audits Aren’t Designed to Detect Fraud, Wants to Meet the Pope, Isn’t Interested in Joining You for Hot Yoga

The Financial Times published an interview with PwC International Chairman Dennis Nally over the weekend and we learn a few interesting things about DN that you probably didn’t know. For starters, he’s very aware that his firm is in a tussle for title of the largest professional services firm ON EARTH, “We’re in a real dog race to continue to sustain our leadership position as the largest professional services network in the world,” he told the FT . Of course this gives us the impression that Denny doesn’t believe that P. Dubs has relinquished the Biggest of the Big 4 title, as some other CEOs have claimed .

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7  Mango update is still months away. There is no confirmed date from Microsoft only the promise that it will be some time this "Fall" (that's Autumn for our British readers), and there are still features to turn on, fine tuning and tweaks to be done.

Still Pocket-lint was one of just four UK publications to be given access to Mango ahead of the official launch later this year to see what we thought.

And while we don’t even come close to getting through all of it, we do go pretty in-depth on some of the major things: iPhone vs. Android sales, WWDC, iOS 5, iCloud, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Google Music Beta, Facebook’s Project Spartan, dining in hell with Facebook’s PR team, Facebook’s new Photos app, Twitter/iOS, and Chromebooks.

CALDWELL: Evaluating WWE's Raw roster after live house show - what's working & not working, who's over & not over, more

CLICK TO EMAIL ARTICLE... OR SPREAD THE WORD BELOW!

Sunday night's WWE Raw brand house show in Houston confirmed several things about the state of affairs on WWE's top brand and also exposed areas where WWE is weak and needs work.

The show also provided a regular look at how the audience is receiving certain characters and simple, basic, often-times generic stories. WWE's version of wrestling is not a sophisticated product, which allows WWE to draw in a wider audience, but also limit emotional investment, which impacts WWE's ability to draw money. Compact that with bad short-term and long-term booking habits on TV and it magnifies the importance of John Cena to this brand.

They packed the pews of a Long Island church this morning to celebrate a woman who had finally found love again — but the tears and laughter were tragically for Jaime Taccetta’s funeral instead of her long-anticipated wedding.

A mind is a precious thing to waste, so why are millions of America’s students wasting theirs by going to college?

All of us who have been there know an undergraduate education is primarily a four year vacation interrupted by periodic bouts of cramming or Google plagiarizing, but at least it used to serve a purpose. It weeded out underachievers and proved at a minimum that you could pass an SAT test. For those who made it to the  good  schools, it proved that your parents had enough money to either bribe administrators or hire SAT tutors to increase your score by 500 points. And a degree represented that the graduate could “party hearty” for long stretches of time and establish social networking skills that would prove invaluable later on at office cocktail parties or interactively via Facebook.

The 2011 West Virginia Mountaineers: Big East College Football Preview and Prediction.

2011 NCAA Football Preview: Big East-West Virginia Mountaineers

Overview:

The off season for West Virginia football has been punctuated by controversy in the coaching ranks, some of which was arguably their own doing. Dana Holgorsen was hired to handle the offensive coordinator position under Bill Stewart and was to take over the program after one year. Some behind the scene actions by Stewart that essentially was making life difficult for Holgorsen ended with his dismissal so the coach of the future became the coach of the present. The question now is can he mold a talented offense in West Virginia in to the juggernauts he led at Houston and Oklahoma State and can he keep his own nose clean after alcohol related issues put him in the news as well for unneeded publicity.

There are simply more goals per game scored on average at the Women's World Cup than at the Men's World Cup. That is the way it has been since the Women's World Cup started in 1991. For the women, the number has fallen by about half a goal per game since the 1999 World Cup. However, there have always been more than three goals scored per game. With that statistic in mind, I decided to layout the biggest scoring threats in the 2011 World Cup.

SEC

Gatorsports counts down the top 25 games in the SEC for the 2011 season.

When: Sept. 24.

Where: Morgantown, W. Va.

Series history: LSU won the only game played between the two teams last year 20-14.

Why it’s No. 25: If LSU is going to be a national title contender, it will have to survive September and a trip to the land of burning couches (not to mention Oregon). We don’t know what to expect with the Mountaineers and their new coach Dana Holgorsen, but this should tell us a lot.

Montgomery and Prince George's counties are trying to revamp the Takoma-Langley Crossroads, which straddles the border between the two jurisdictions and suffers from rows of old shopping centers, few amenities and poor pedestrian access.

Both counties want to replace the current shopping centers with mixed-use real estate -- mid- and high-rise buildings with retail on the bottom and residences or offices on top. In particular, Montgomery County officials have described a desire for high-end retail.

Do the Diamondbacks Have Enough Pitching To Win The NL West?

Their record seems deserved, too, with a +21 run differential that is tops in the division. There are concerns about whether they can keep this up, though, as they have a potentially killer flaw: a lack of legitimate starting pitching.

Juist.

Sam Donnellon: A's pitcher Outman takes long way to the Bank

NEW YORK - Gio Gonzalez, Carlos Carrasco, Josh Outman. Most teams would salivate for the chance to put those names at the top of their rotation, especially if they could drop in, say, a Gavin Floyd or maybe even a Kyle Drabek, once the kid straightens things out in Triple A, to round it out.

First impression: The Phillies lost a game and maybe a starting pitcher in Thursday night’s 12-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Roy Oswalt was forced from the game after two innings because of lower back stiffness.

The loss was the Phillies’ worst of the season. They finished a six-game road trip at 3-3 and are 47-29 on the season.

Arris Still in Neutral Zone

June 22, 2011 | Filed under: Press Releases | Posted by: Zacks Research

We reaffirm our long-term Neutral recommendation on Arris Group Inc. ( ARRS ). The company’s first-quarter 2011 financial results failed to meet the Zacks Consensus Estimates. Arris is a leading provider of infrastructure solutions for broadband networks. If the cable operators fail to compete effectively with other pay-TV service providers, then it will significantly affect Arris’ future growth. Management provided a weak financial outlook for the rest of 2011.

It was the third day of a hearing in Gatineau, Que., on “vertical integration,” or the consolidation that has seen cable and satellite companies owning more of the TV channels they distribute.

All dogs should be micro chipped at birth or soon thereafter. All vets should scan dogs for the chip and without it, not treat the animal until after the chip is inserted and ownership is registered. There should also be a sales record of dogs much like with livestock to track ownership.

St. John's announces 45 layoffs ahead of nursing hires

St. John’s Hospital is laying off 45 employees as part of a staff “rebalancing” so the hospital can afford 80 new registered nurses who will be hired in coming months, St. John’s officials said Tuesday.

“Anytime you have to eliminate a staff position, it’s a very tough day,” chief executive officer Bob Ritz told The State Journal-Register. “We looked at every possible angle.”

EXCHANGE: State Fairgrounds slide for sale

By CHRIS DETTRO - The (Springfield) State Journal-Register

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- A guy can have only so much fun with a Giant Slide.

At least that's how Dennis Herrington, who has been sole owner of the Giant Slide at the Illinois State Fairgrounds since 1995, sees it.

He's now 57 years old, has had health problems and has no children at home to help him operate the iconic structure just inside the Main Gate of the fairgrounds.

Sony's music comeback story needs third act

Qriocity manager Michael Aragon ponders the music service's future in March, just six weeks before a security breach would taint the service's reputation.

Sony's quest to return to a position of power in the music sector already faced plenty of obstacles.

A reputation for writing flawed software was one. Another was the company's history of creating failed consumer-focused media services that appeared more concerned with satisfying honchos at the company's film studio and record label. The company's hardware and software makers struggled to build devices and services that allayed security concerns held by content creators. Sony Connect , the so-called iTunes killer that bubbled up out of the chaos, was a glitch-prone and DRM-laden fiasco that launched to great fan apathy.

E3 2011: Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker HD Preview - Preview - GamingUnion.net

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection has been a long time coming, but Hideo Kojima finally announced its existence during Konami's pre-E3 event. Including Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater and the latest in the Metal Gear canon, Peace Walker, fans can expect to re-experience the rise of Outer Heaven and the Patriots all over again in high definition. Peace Walker HD in particular was playable at E3 and seeing as I'm a massive dork for the franchise, I didn't hesitate in getting some hands-on time with it at Konami's booth.

The Customer Isn't Always Right

People are motivated by their own interests, not your company's. Meet their demands and pay attention to their opinions—discerningly, putting your own needs first

I get a kick out of business buzzwords. Reengineering. Rightsizing. Repurposing. One of the latest you may have heard bandied about is "Voice of the Customer." It's a phrase that, in fairness, recognizes that companies can go astray by making decisions without fully understanding their effect on those they serve. But I've also heard the term invoked as a way to trump (or delay) an idea born of inspiration or imagination—as if by magically incorporating "the voice of the customer" a company can somehow eliminate risk.
