2011 Fantasy Forecasts Incredible IDPs | Fantasy Football articles - Sports Grumblings.com

If you're in a keeper league, you realize the value of identifying undervalued players as quickly as possible -- it's easier to acquire these hidden gems if you're the only one in your league with the inside track on their 2011 performance. Even if you’re not in a keeper league, getting the biggest return on your draft picks usually involves snagging a good player late in the draft—allowing you to use your earlier picks to select known producers.

2011 Episode 4 Review

by babefromtheburbs - August 30, 2011 | Email the author

So, just as I guessed last week (not that it takes a genius, mind you), the über-climactic end to last week’s episode revealed a not-so-climactic beginning to last night’s fun.  Gnomeo, by the skin of his halitosis-laden teeth managed to squeak by another rose ceremony unscathed and Jake left with his version of a dramatic exit which consisted of him basically telling Kasey he was a better man since having met him, apologizing to Vienna and telling everyone that gee willikers, it sure has been fun here with all you great folks.  Huh?

10 Rule Changes the NFL Should Implement Immediately

Sometimes, they're for the better, but usually they end up with the majority of fans whining about how Commissioner Goddell and the NFL brass is taking the fun out of the league.

Meanwhile, there are rules that should be implemented that never seem to be. With this thought in mind, I tried to come up with 10 rules that either need to be changed or put back to the way they were. However, just because I'm tired of talking about it a decade later, the dead horse that is the tuck rule will not be making an appearance.

GDN: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked Review (3DS) - 3DS

Remaking a game released all of two and a half years ago must seem strange. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked is an update of the DS’ earlier Devil Survivor, a tactical RPG that let players build their own squad of fantasy-style monsters and fight their way through a demon invasion in modern Japan. The core of that game is intact, with a variety of new content that makes this basically the ’director’s cut’. While one can question the need for such an edition, it’s worth noting that the original Devil Survivor still commands a fair amount of its original retail price today so this improved re-release could be a very good purchase for some people and particularly those who missed out on the previous game. Much of this review’s content will be aimed at that crowd, thus.

Uncharted 3 TV Special Coming To Spike

Before PS3 action-adventure Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception hits store this fall, Spike TV will air a special featuring the game. The special will have a contest in which gamers show off their adventuring skills.

They don't say in detail what the contest will entail. It sounds like it'll be a bunch of Uncharted -themed challenges - in other words, kinda like Survivor but without all the tribe and voting nonsense. If the Uncharted games are any indication, you'll be doing a lot of rock climbing and puzzle solving. Or maybe they'll just give the prize to the contestant with the best five o'clock shadow.

Observation deck: Giants-Jets

I'm going to start with the positives, because I get accused too often by overly sensitive New York Giants fans of being too negative about their team. And when they look bad, I promise I'll continue to point that out. But in their second-to-last preseason game Monday night -- a meaningless 17-3 loss to the New York Jets -- I saw a lot of things on the Giants' defense that I really liked.

NASCAR Chase picture still very murky

First posted:| Updated:

With only races at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Richmond Speedway left on the regular season NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule, the Chase for the Championship picture is still pretty much murky.

What is clear is that after their finishes at Bristol Motor Speedway this past Saturday night Kyle Busch, in the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, Jimmie Johnson in the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, Matt Kenseth in the No. 17 Roush Fenway Racing Ford and teammate Carl Edwards in the No. 99 Ford, are all guaranteed spots among the dozen drivers who will compete for the Sprint Cup starting at Chicagoland Speedway Sept. 18.

Nick Folk Wins Jets' Kicking Job

Nick Novak was released today, after Nick Folk sealed the Jets kicker job with a 33 yarder last night against the Giants. Folk struggled during the middle of 2010 but was clutch for the Jets down the stretch and in the playoffs. Punter Chris Bryan was also released as was WR Courtney Smith.

Don’t be so sure that TJ Conley owns the Jets punting job just yet. The Jets may still scour the waiver wire, or wait for the one who loses the Giants punt off. Current Giant and former Jet Steve Weatherford did a great job landing kicks inside the 20 for Gang Green last year. Weatherford, who signed with Big Blue as a free agent weeks back, is still battling second year player Matt Dodge .

TMQ says it's time to focus on safety in football practice - ESPN

From the standpoint of most spectators, football is all about the game. From the standpoint of most players, football is all about practice. What players go through at practice, particularly two-a-days, can be more grueling than what they go through during games. When coaches tell players, "Compared to practice, the game will be fun," they aren't kidding.

2011 Giants' Position Battles: Matt Dodge Vs. Steve Weatherford, Updated - Big Blue View

We have talked a lot this preseason about the New York Giants punting competition between second-year punter Matt Dodge and veteran free agent Steve Weatherford.

My good friend Pat, Traina, editor of Inside Football, has gone on record with her 53-man roster prediction and she has Dodge beating out Weatherford for the spot. I have gone on record as guessing that, in the end, the Giants will choose Weatherford. Am I 100 percent sure? No, but I will stick with it. So, Pat and I will duke it out on this one.

Big 12 Week 1 Scouting Reports, Part 1

Goodbye, offseason. Hello, football.

The 2011 season is finally within sight. While these past seven months have felt like a lifetime, the next four or five will likely be gone in the blink of an eye. With a nine-game conference schedule, non-conference games are cut from four to three, but they’re all still vitally important. Losses mean more in college football than any American sport, and teams especially want to avoid being eliminated from the national title hunt in the season’s first week. In the opening half of our weekly scouting reports, we take a look at the Big 12’s first five teams in alphabetical order. Included is the conference’s game of the week, a rivalry matchup between the Baylor Bears and the TCU Horned Frogs. While many other teams have cupcakes on the schedule during the season’s first week, Art Briles and Robert Griffin may face their stiffest defensive challenge of the season.

Harrell's last word on Thursday

This summer was a testimony of sorts for quarterback Graham Harrell . Each practice and each game, he takes the stand. The former Texas Tech star is out to prove that a quarterback bred in Mike Leach’s pass-happy system can, indeed, succeed in the NFL.

After setting the NCAA record for passing touchdowns and completions at Texas Tech (2005-08), he was unwanted in two leagues — the NFL and the CFL. Last year, the Packers gave Harrell a shot on the practice squad and he’s been improving since.

Green Bay Packers team report: Rodgers to make cameo Thursday

GREEN BAY, Wis. — QB Aaron Rodgers will start Thursday's preseason finale against Kansas City. Rodgers sat out practice Monday with a sprained foot, but he returned to practice Tuesday and looked no worse for wear. Rodgers' practice consisted mostly of scout team work because he probably will only play a series against the Chiefs. Backups Matt Flynn and Graham Harrell took the majority of snaps with the No. 1 offense in preparation for Thursday night.

SECond down: LSU feels Jarrett Lee can do job in place of Jordan Jefferson

LSU will turn to experienced backup quarterback Jarrett Lee to lead the Tigers against Oregon on Saturday after No. 1 QB Jordan Jefferson was suspended indefinitely.

Depending on which LSU fan you've polled lately, last week's arrest and indefinite suspension of starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson either makes or breaks the No. 4 Tigers as a national championship contender entering Saturday's season opener against No. 3 Oregon in Dallas.

Rodgers sits out Monday workout!

Green Bay Packers  QB Aaron Rodgers wanted to practice on Monday, but

coach Mike McCarthy held him out of workouts because of a sprained foot.  McCarthy said the injury was not serious and he wouldn’t say if Rodgers will play at all in the preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday.

Chiefs vs. Packers: TV Schedule, Live Streaming, Radio, Game Time and More | Bleacher Report

The Kansas City Chiefs take the last remaining questions in the preseason to Lambeau Field as they take on the Green Bay Packers.

This is by no means a throw away game. The last remaining preseason contest will go a long way to answer crucial questions before the to tams take the field on opening day.

Jones hasn’t seen many passes thrown his way in preseason

Benny Sieu James Jones spent the offseason working on catching deep passes after dropping several balls last season.

Green Bay - When wide receiver James Jones signed a new contract with the Green Bay Packers earlier this month, it did not include any language guaranteeing that he would get the ball thrown his way.

Another Recession Is At Hand - Seeking Alpha

Michael Spence, professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business and winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in economics, believes there's "probably a 50 percent" chance of the global economy slipping into recession. Noriel Roubini disagrees and, given the accuracy of his predictions, that is scary. He says flatly that a recession is coming and that it is a mission impossible now to stop it. The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank places the odds at 85 percent of a recession. Peter Schiff, who with Roubini, correctly and accurately predicted the collapse on Wall Street and ensuing recession, thinks one is 100 percent certain.

How To Keep Pants Peeing To a Minimum During Pregnancy

2.  Take frequent bathroom breaks before you actually have to go.  If you try to hold it for too long, it may not end well.  Accept your limitations ladies.

3.  Try to avoid excessive weight gain.  Extra weight = extra pushing on your bladder, which = more pants peeing.

4.  Avoid coffee, citrus, tomatoes and soda, which can irritate your bladder, leading to more leakage.

Carter Sets Record, Netters Nip Forbush

The Watauga High volleyball team has been blessed with some great setters over the years. Most recently, Bailey Hagaman, who graduated last spring, backboned WHS (4-2) the last three years. But the torch has been passed down. And following a shuffle between Kristen Carter and Anna Church sharing the position to start the season, Carter seems to have nestled herself into thef setter position.

Being Pregnant

To play devils advocate for a second, I would add it’s important not to discount what the doctors are saying about weight gain or loss but rather to ask more questions and get more information instead. When my daughter was born we were told by the doctors she was losing too much weight while being told by lactation activists that if we bottle fed at all it would mess everything up. When she lost so much they were going to have to readmit her to the hospital we started supplimenting and found I had almost zero milk supply and had been essentially starving the poor girl to death for more than a week. She’s fine but I still wish I’d been on top of it enough to not listen to everyone else and follow my gut to get more information instead (like your suggestions of weighing before and after feedings).

John Madden talks 'Madden' foootball, video games as teaching tools, and the history behind his game - ESPN

When a fan walks up to John Madden, the Hall of Famer knows instantly whether he's recognized as a former coach or for his billion-dollar video game franchise. "If someone remembers me as a coach, they still call me Coach," Madden says, "but if they know me for the video game, they just call me Madden. Just the other day, I went to where a bunch of high schoolers were hanging out, and that's what happened. They just all call me Madden."

Opening this weekend at the movies

The summer movie season ends with a bite and a spacely scare. Or it may just go out with a shrug.

The problem with 1975’s “Jaws” is that it unfortunately closed to door on making other shark flicks in the last thirty years. Outside of that film’s crummy sequels only been a few. For better or worse there’s been fare like “Great White,” “Deep Blue Sea” and “Open Water.” No studio has yet to tackle the period killer shark attack non-fiction novel “Close to Shore” or going nuts with a film version of the novel “Meg.”

Darren McFadden, Rashard Mendenhall, Knowshon Moreno Receiving Rave Reviews

By Larry Brown August 29, 2011 - Posted in Fantasy Football

When players receive constant praise and recognition during training camp, it generally is an antecedent to a successful season. Running backs Darren McFadden, Rashard Mendenhall, and Knowshon Moreno fit that bill, so they’ve turned me into believers.

NFL.com news: Preseason Week 3 tells some tales for fantasy owners

The NFL preseason isn't going to significantly alter the fantasy value of most players. If there's one week you should have watched, however, it's Week 3, which is considered a virtual "dress rehearsal" for the regular season starters. With that in mind, here's a look at the most fantasy-relevant events that occurred in Week 3 of preseason action.

Fantasy Source - Pro Football - Sporting News

Normally I'm a "draft two RBs ASAP" kinda guy, but after a few mock drafts and two real ones last weekend, I'm rethinking that conventional wisdom.

In ouron Aug. 10 (new mock coming Thursday), I drafted Adrian Peterson No. 1 overall, then snagged Greg Jennings and Matt Fore with the swings picks in Rounds 2-3. Little did I know that Knowshon Moreno would still be sitting there when I was trying to decide how to spend the with the 48th-overall pick in the fourth round. I could have doubled up on WRs in Rounds 2-3 and still landed a solid RB2 in Moreno. Lesson learned?

NFL.com news: Is Manning worth the risk after missing preseason?

This quarterback is a gamer. He never misses a game, and this injury does not scare me at all. Who cares if he misses preseason because this guy is a veteran and he does not need preseason to get ready.

Think I am talking about Peyton Manning?

Uh no, this is what people were saying about Brett Favre last year.

Steelers, plenty of others seek supremacy in AFC

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr., AP Sports Writer – 6 hours ago

The Steelers were a team in flux a year ago, their star quarterback about to sit out a four-game suspension.

Ben Roethlisberger returned after Pittsburgh went 3-1, leading the team to its third AFC championship in six seasons. Now the bitter taste of a Super Bowl loss to Green Bay and a controversy-filled offseason have the Steelers itching to defend their AFC title. After keeping the core of their roster together, they're loaded to make another run.

Breakdown: Lions 34, Patriots 10

DETROIT - And that look from Patriots coach Bill Belichick, taken in the aftermath of the Lions' final score of the first half, about says it all.

The PatriotsÂ’ trip to Detroit was pretty much an abject failure with a 34-10 loss. A viewing of the television copy did nothing to change that opinion.

Patriots Journal: It wasn’t a good night for starters on defense | New England Patriots | projo.com | The Providence Journal

DETOIT — When Detroit’s offense was slicing through the Patriots’ defense on Saturday night, it was doing it against New England’s top players.

There are times in preseason games when one team uses its starters while the opponent does not. The Patriots still did not have Albert Haynesworth and Shaun Ellis, two of the newcomers they are hoping will improve their defense. They started Mark Anderson at end in place of Andre Carter, another newcomer who has looked excellent thus far.

Nate Solder is going to be the New England Patriots' starting left tackle and Tom Brady's chief blindside protector for many years to come.

Of course, that won't happen until the rookie first-round pick is ready to assume the job, and Matt Light passes the baton.

Buck Showalter

said Sunday that he wasn't appreciative of the criticism waged by several Yankee representatives, including outfielder Curtis Granderson and manager Joe Girardi — especially given the timing of the complaints Friday evening.

"First of all, I felt that some of the stuff was a little disrespectful to Flanny, quite frankly. That didn't sit with me very well. I can tell you that," Showalter said. "I think we had an April rainout there — and they just told us when we were playing. We were OK with that. … Some of it kind of has a feeling of [being] hypocritical. I don't know. I don't dwell on it.

New England Patriots 2011 Season Preview

By Scott Garbarini, Sports Network - The Sports Network

New England has actually lost its last three postseason matchups, a downward spiral that started when its famed and then-unbeaten 2007 outfit was upset by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. A humbling 33-14 home defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 AFC Wild Card Playoffs continued the sequence, and a bitter setback to the rival New York Jets in last season's Divisional Round extended it.

The Patriots defense got beat up last night in Detroit. Is Erik Bedard the third starter for the Red Sox in the postseason? John Ryder and Kirk Miniha...

MIKE GOODSON: School football returned in '45

By fall of 1945, America was ready to return to normalcy following World War II.

On Sept. 14, 1945, Etowah County high schools were ready to test their teams in the year's opening games. The Gadsden Tigers, led by Coach Nurmi Nelson, were preparing to meet Cherokee County High School, and the Etowah Blue Devils, led by Coach Clyde Childers, were preparing to tangle with Glencoe High School.

"Friday Night Frenzy" Football Recaps

In the first full Friday night of high school football, we wrote 35 recaps of metro Atlanta games. Led by Collins Hill’s comeback victory over Roswell in a game that was televised by GPB, there were several exciting games around Atlanta.

St. Pius X got off the schneid with their first victory over Westminster since 1992, while North Atlanta defeated South Atlanta 3-0 in a defensive struggle. Creekview took “The Battle of Hickory Flat” over their Cherokee County neighbors, Sequoyah.

Cherokee Tribune

Season openers, games that allow for new starters to get on the field and make their mark, are typically plagued with penalties and turnovers.

In Friday night’s four games among Cherokee County’s teams, each saw several impact performers come to the forefront. In the lone intra-county battle, Creekview defeated Sequoyah 24-14 in a game that not only pitted the neighboring archrivals, but also had Region 7AAAA ramifications.

LYLE RANDOLPH Special to the Daily Dunklin Democrat

In mid-August, Confederate General Gideon Pillow and his "Army of Liberation" were occupying New Madrid and establishing a base of operations against Federal forces at Bird's Point in Mississippi County and at Cairo, Illinois. Confederate General W.J. Hardee had moved from Arkansas into Southeast Missouri near Greenville in Wayne County. The majority of the soldiers from Dunklin County were with General Jeff Thompson and the First Division of the Missouri State Guard. Throughout the month, the State Guard troops often found themselves moving across the swamps between Pillow and Hardee trying to support an offensive that never seemed to gain any momentum. With Thompson anxious to move northward, the indecisiveness of the Confederate commanders during these weeks frustrated Thompson.

I'm not really posh, says 'Downton Abbey' actor Dan Stevens - Telegraph

Then again, the sticky question of class is one that Stevens has been pondering for most of his life. Meeting him today in the library at Highclere Castle – the home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, where Julian Fellowes’s period drama is filmed – he seems perfectly at home. If you knew nothing about his background, you would think that Stevens’s blood was as blue as his eyes – an impression heightened by his heroic bone structure, cut-glass accent, impeccable manners and easy charm.

Eat drink play montreal

It is the largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris, and it's in Canada. Andrew Sun enjoys its gastronomic and other attractions.

It will be at least 10:30 pm before we can get a table. It is a Thursday night, no less. That was the word from the concierge when we asked him to book us into Montreal's renowned eatery Au Pied de Cochon. Chef Martin Picard's staunchly Quebecois diner is either still the city's favorite place for comfort food or Montreal's reputation as a late night party town is as true as ever. A weekend in Quebec's energetic hub of play and pleasure was bound to include little sleep - bars open every night until 3 am - so eating a little late is no big deal. Canada's second largest city, and the biggest French-speaking metropolis after Paris, has always lived by its free-spirited, hedonistic ways. Occasionally, there's an economic price to pay (its 1976 Olympic debt was finally cleared in 2006) but it is a beautiful liberalism the denizens wear like an old tie-dyed shirt.

Sighting or hearing owls does not portend death Published 9:55am Saturday, August 27, 2011

My neighbor Crandall stops by.

“How are you doing?” I ask.

“Everything is nearly copacetic. My dream job is falling asleep at a desk. When I played football in high school, the coach wanted me to be asleep by 9:00. If I could get to school by 8:45, I was sound asleep by 9:00. I’d been training for a desk job. Have I ever told you my views on the education system? I think that when a student is disruptive in class, instead of suspending him or her, a parent should be required to spend an entire day attending every class with that child.”

Democracy not martial law

PM Gillani is right in warning politicians to deliver in Karachi to save democracy. Islamabad and Sindh should strategize to undertake the operation in Karachi to restore peace, bring culprits to book and de-weaponize it. PPP has majority in Sindh and therefore it has the political backing of the public to make a government and deliver. PML (N) and other parties in center can render their support to PPP on Karachi operation to strengthen democracy, deliver justice and end politics of extortions and target killings in Sindh. Mian Nawaz Sharif should come forward to play his role in restoring law and order in Karachi.

Redskins-Ravens Film Review: Offense

Quarterback Rex Grossman of the Washington Redskins hands off to Dante Barnes in preseason football at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD, Thursday, August 25, 2011. ( Andrew Harnik / The Washington Times)

My observations, analysis and conclusions about the Washington Redskins ‘ offense after re-watching their 34-31 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens using the TV broadcast:

Tale of the tape: Redskins offense | John Keim | NFL | Washington Examiner

1. All about the quarterbacks at the start. Rex Grossman did an excellent job of never feeling the rush. He’ll make mistakes and he’ll look bad at times, but the guy stands in the pocket and keeps his eyes downfield. And when he has time, he’ll slice a defense. Of course, any QB in this league should be able to do that; the key is what happens when you’re under duress. I love how deadly Grossman is in the middle of the field, but I wish he would use other parts as well. Tough to win consistently by just targeting one area. I did not add up, yet, how many of his completions went to the middle but my initial guess is that 75 percent of his completions were in this zone.

Three and out

, Chris Johnson , Domenik Hixon , John Beck , New York Giants , Rex Grossman , Tennessee Titans , Victor Cruz , Washington Redskins

Redskins QB competition continues:  If either John Beck or Rex Grossman is interested in being the Redskins starting quarterback this season, neither one has done that much to show it. Both signal callers were alternately solid and shaky during Thursday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, and if there’s a front-runner in the competition, coach Mike Shanahan  isn’t telling anyone . Then again, as we’ve seen in recent seasons, being named the Redskins starter doesn’t mean you’ll get all of the crucial snaps (we’re looking at you, Donovan McNabb ). With an energetic looking Tim Hightower  in the backfield and solid receiving targets in Santana Moss  and Chris Cooley  (if he’s healthy), the eventual starter in Washington has the potential to be a No. 2 quarterback in a lot of leagues…if only we knew who it was going to be. The waiting is the hardest part.

Thursday's preseason review

The Jungle is now on Facebook. Click here and like us!

As teams enter the third week of preseason, many will be looking to get their projected starters the most work they've seen on the field to date. In other words, if you're going to watch any preseason games, this is the week to do it.

EVANS MAKES BOLDIN MORE VIABLE: Where ever you might have ranked Lee Evans and Anquan Boldin among receivers prior to the Bills-Ravens trade that sent Evans to Baltimore, move both of them up a few spots. Actually, in the case of Evans, you probably need to jump him up about 15 to 20 spots. ... What happened on Thursday in Baltimore's 34-31 victory against the Redskins is what I expect to happen all season. Boldin really isn't much more than a possession receiver, but defenses were going to be able to sit on the underneath throws to him because the Ravens lacked a legit threat that could stretch the field. Enter Evans, who was once the best deep threat in the NFL. He's going to relax defenses on Boldin, while catching some long balls himself. Boldin had five receptions for 73 yards on Thursday with Evans pulled in three catches for 60 yards -- a nice 20 yards per reception average. Both players caught a TD from QB Joe Flacco, who looked strong after a rough start, completing 17 of 27 passes for 219 yards and two TDs. The passing game is legit in Baltimore. At least every week it doesn't face the Steelers anyway.

Drew Brees: Kyle Orton has walked in Tim Tebow's shoes

Ravens Notebook: Line prepares for shift

BALTIMORE - As a hulking Bryant McKinnie walked around the sidelines in workout clothes one day after passing his physical and signing his $7.5 million contract, there was already change on the Baltimore Ravens' offensive line.

With McKinnie's arrival about to trigger a watershed change with Michael Oher about to move to right offensive tackle from the left side, the Ravens had Oher start at left tackle against the Washington Redskins last night at M&T Bank Stadium.

Canada

Too many cops?

The crime rate is down but police forces are growing. We’re poorer as a result, but not necessarily any safer.

This spring, Tamara Cartwright dropped off an envelope at her local post office outside Lethbridge, Alta. A friend had sent her a jar of hemp-based ointment, so she replied with a thank you card, wrote her name and return address on the envelope and, in a decision certain to haunt her for years to come, enclosed four grams of her homegrown marijuana, enough for perhaps four cigarettes. On an April morning some days later she returned to the post office to pick up another package. Moments later, police pulled her over, handcuffed her, put her in a cruiser and hauled her off to the police station.

High school football kicks off

Football season is officially here. No, we're not talking about college football, that doesn't start for another week. And the start of the NFL season is still about two weeks away. Thursday night marks the start of another year of high school football. This weekend begins a run that every team hopes doesn't end until right before Christmas at Cowboys Stadium, the site of most state finals this year. Who are the teams and players to watch? Here's a look at how things might shake out in Class 4A and 5A.

Now finally almost a week later the blood fever that gripped me has subsided enough for me to tell you about it.

DEBKAfile, Political Analysis, Espionage, Terrorism, Security

Three Scud missiles flying from Iraq to Kuwait early Friday, Aug. 26 were launched by the Iran-backed Ketaeb Hizballah of Iraq, the first such attacks since the US invaded Iraq in 2003. It was also the first time any Middle East terrorist group had used Scud missiles. They exploded on open ground, but debkafile's sources report that this round was meant as a warning for Kuwait to halt construction of the Grand Mubarak Port opposite the Iraqi shore - or else it would be followed by a massive volley. In the second week of August, Kuwait massed troops on Boubiyan Island just across from Iraq to defend the huge $1.1 billion Grand Mubarak Port under construction there. The force was composed of Military Police of the Amoun Defense Organization, units of intelligence and air defense, the 35th Company, the 6th Brigade and naval forces. This appeared to be rather a disproportionate reaction to Iraq's demand that Kuwait freeze construction of the Persian Gulf port until guarantees were provided that the new facility would not hinder the operations of Iraq's own planned harbor in the southern region of Basra. Iraq also fears it will block the main Persian Gulf gateway for its oil exports to reach the world's shipping lanes from the Shatt al-Arb.

N.C. AG part of winning side in case against grant scheme

RALEIGH, N.C. (Legal Newsline) - North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper announced on Friday that attorneys from four states and the Federal Trade Commission have won court orders or settlements to stop an alleged phony government grant scheme.

A network of telemarketers from North Carolina to Utah allegedly used telemarketing and misleading tactics to convince consumers to pay for services that were supposed to help them win grant money from the government. Consumers who paid for the service never won any grants or received any money, Cooper says.

Teaching is fundamental: it's Linebacker U for Eagles

PHILADELPHIA , There might be a reason, other than just not being very good, why Eagles linebackers had so much trouble getting off blocks in last Thursday's 24-14 preseason loss at Pittsburgh.

Rookie middle linebacker Casey Matthews and strongside starter Jamar Chaney talked Sunday about trying to learn the technique that linebackers coach Mike Caldwell and defensive coordinator Juan Castillo are teaching, which asks the linebacker to face the blocker and use his hands to get free, rather than lowering a shoulder.

By Phil PerryCSNNE.com The sound is what everyone remembers.  Nancy Kerrigan laid on the ground, reaching for her leg and called out, “Why?” Over and over again she shrieked through her tears, “Why? Why? Why?”

Kerrigan was one of the United States’ premier figure skaters in the early 1990s and was preparing for the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit when her attacker struck her in the leg just above the knee with a collapsible police baton. She suffered a contusion and was knocked out of the event.  By that point in her career, Kerrigan had already won an Olympic bronze medal (1992) and at the time of her attack in January of 1994, she seemed poised to be named to the U.S. Olympic team for the Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Some thought she'd win gold. But for the 24-year-old from Stoneham, Mass., everything was put on hold when she got whacked. The question became not only “Why?” but “Who?” As in, who would do such a thing?  Tonya Harding – Kerrigan's rival who was also one of the favorites in the upcoming Olympics – was quickly implicated. Days after the attack, Harding’s bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt admitted to authorities that he and Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly had hatched a plan to attack Kerrigan. The hit man, Shane Stant, and his getaway car driver were also convicted. Harding claimed to have no knowledge of the thuggery. Despite her injury, Kerrigan was selected to the Olympic team, and despite the controversy, so was Harding. As the investigation continued, Harding eventually pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder an investigation and was banned from U.S. Figure Skating Association competitions.

200-year-old EIU oak under the weather

A burr oak tree on Eastern Illinois University's campus that's older than the school itself is ailing and officials aren't sure what's wrong.

Some leaves and branches on the roughly 200-year-old oak on the east side of the school's Old Main building have turned brown this summer.

Dave Crockett is the Charleston school's assistant director of facilities. He tells the Mattoon Journal-Gazette (http://bit.ly/nWOg7J ) that the tree could just be suffering the effects of age. Or perhaps a fungus is the culprit. Or damage from a lightning strike a few years ago.

Few options exist for pre-harvest herbicide applications in corn and soybean

Jennifer Shike, University of Illinois   |   Updated: August 24, 2011

The list of herbicide active ingredients available for pre-harvest applications in corn or soybean is relatively short, said University of Illinois Extension weed specialist Aaron Hager.

"In corn, glyphosate, paraquat and some formulations of 2,4-D or premixes containing 2,4-D may be applied to provide suppression/control of weeds prior to harvest, while glyphosate, paraquat, dicamba (Clarity) and carfentrazone are labeled for pre-harvest applications in soybean," he said.
