The Watauga High volleyball team has been blessed with some great setters over the years. Most recently, Bailey Hagaman, who graduated last spring, backboned WHS (4-2) the last three years. But the torch has been passed down. And following a shuffle between Kristen Carter and Anna Church sharing the position to start the season, Carter seems to have nestled herself into thef setter position.
The end result, the Pioneers, who had dropped two in a row (their longest losing streak in ten years) have won three straight. Monday night, WHS rallied winning games four and five to beat Forbush 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 17-15) at Lentz-Eggers Gym. And Carter, who racked up 68 assists in Saturday's tri-match against Newton-Conover and Enka, set a school record with 61 assists in the win against Forbush.
That effort broke the old mark of 58 assists set by Hagaman her junior year in 2009.
"It was a great game, and a good win," said WHS coach Kris Hagaman. "The girls have really put things together in our last few games. Kristen was very strong back there for us. She had a great game."
Carter also had 14 digs. Channing Hagaman had 17 kills and 22 digs; Hannah Stewart had 15 kills and 17 digs; Colby Combs had 17 kills and Church had nine kills. Ashlyn Van Dyke had 21 digs.
The JV team defeated Forbush in two games by identical 25-18 scores. Whitney Dunnigan had eight assists and four kills; Sierra Hill had five kills nad five digs; Meredith Farthing had four kills and four digs.
WHS travels to Mount Tabor in Winston-Salem Thursday night.
