Leicester 3-2 Southampton: Daily Mirror match report

Richie Wellens has vowed revenge on wannabe prankster Kasper Schmeichel.

Wellens is preparing to get even with Schmeichel despite the Foxes keeper spectacularly repaying his debt to his team-mates against Southampton.

Schmeichel made up for his dismissal at Nottingham Forest last weekend with a stunning late show to ease the pressure on Sven Goran Eriksson.

The £1.2million signing performed heroics to condemn Saints to their first defeat of the season and earn Eriksson his first victory at the King Power Stadium this term.

But his amazing acrobatics will not prevent chief mischief maker Wellens from springing a big surprise later this week.

Wellens said: “Kasper has done a few things to my trainers and my socks and I know it’s him.

“I’m the prankster in the dressing room and he’s trying to take my mantle. I’ll definitely get him back though.

“I’ve got something planned and he needs to watch himself over the next week or so!

“But he showed against Southampton he could easily play in the Premier League. I was at Manchester United when his dad [Peter] was there and Kasper has so many similarities.

“We were all disappointed with last weekend because Kasper got sent off and it cost us two points – but he’s definitely made up for it.”

Schmeichel produced four stunning saves in the final 10 minutes as the Foxes clung on grimly in an afternoon of nerve-shredding drama.

City raced into the lead with Darius Vassell’s third-minute goal and extended it on 22 minutes through Wellens himself. Dan Harding reduced the deficit six minutes later but a contentious own goal from Rickie Lambert on the stroke of half-time put City back in control.

David Connolly’s headed goal on 53 minutes gave Saints hope and Eriksson then needed Schmeichel to deny Adam Lallana twice, Connolly and Lambert to secure the win.

Saints skipper Dean Hammond said: “We’re frustrated as players and this is disappointing but we have to move on.

“We could have nicked it because we dominated the second half but we’ve just got to win the next game now.”
