Area golfers finish far back at Texas Women's Open

GARLAND — Stephenville golfer Shelly Martinez finished tied for 39th — the best finish among three Big Country golfers — as the Texas Women's Open concluded Thursday at Eastern Hills Country Club.

Martinez, who opened the tournament with a 2-over-par 72, tumbled to an 80 Thursday.

The other two Big Country golfers, former Cooper standout and North Texas sophomore Brook Bailey and Graham's McKenna Walker, finished near the bottom of the leader board. Bailey wound up tied for 111th after shooting an 88 Thursday. Walker was three places behind after shooting 90 both days. Both were playing as amateurs.

Ashley Tait of Littleton, Colo., captured the title by two strokes over Katy Harris of Humble with a 1-under par 69 and 7 under 133 for her first professional victory. She earned $4,300.
