Red Sox Activate Right-Handed Pitcher Bobby Jenks and Left-Handed Pitcher Franklin Morales from 15-Day Disabled List | redsox.com: Official Info

The Boston Red Sox today activated right-handed pitcher Bobby Jenks and left-handed pitcher Franklin Morales from the 15-day disabled list. The club also optioned right-handed pitcher Scott Atchison to Triple-A Pawtucket and announced that left-handed pitcher Tommy Hottovy was optioned to Pawtucket following Sunday's game. Jenks and Morales will be active for tonight's game against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Jenks, 30, has been on the disabled list since June 8 due to left back tightness. He made one rehab start with Double-A Portland, tossing 1.0 scoreless inning with one strikeout on Saturday night (June 25). The right-hander has appeared in 15 games out of the bullpen with Boston this year, including 10 scoreless outings, going 2-2 with a 6.57 ERA (9 ER/12.1 IP) and 14 strikeouts. He also missed time on the DL from May 2-30 due to a right biceps strain. Signed by the Red Sox as a free agent in December, Jenks has posted a 3.51 ERA (138 ER/354.0 IP) and 173 saves while going 16-20 in 344 career Major League appearances over parts of seven seasons with the White Sox (2005-10) and Red Sox (2011).

Morales, 25, was placed on the disabled list on May 29 (retroactive to May 26) due to a left forearm strain. He made six rehab appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket, posting a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP) with six strikeouts. The left-hander was acquired by Boston from Colorado on May 19 and made two relief appearances for the Red Sox prior to going on the DL, allowing four runs (two earned runs) over 3.0 innings with three strikeouts. He tallied a 3.86 ERA (6 ER/14.0 IP) and 11 strikeouts while going 0-1 over 14 relief outings with the Rockies earlier this year, holding opponents to a .204 average (10-for-49). In 104 career Major League appearances (15 starts) over parts of five seasons with Colorado (2007-11) and Boston (2011), Morales is 7-11 with 10 saves, a 4.85 ERA (81 ER/150.1 IP) and 117 strikeouts compared to 87 walks.

The 35-year-old Atchison was recalled Friday (June 24) for his third stint with the Red Sox this season but did not appear in a game. In his seven games with Boston over his first two stretches with the club in 2011, he tallied a 4.73 ERA (7 ER/13.1 IP) with nine strikeouts compared to two walks. The right-hander has also pitched in 17 games with Pawtucket this year, including one start, going 2-1 with two saves, a 1.39 ERA (5 ER/32.1 IP), 37 strikeouts and three walks. Atchison has appeared in 103 career Major League games (one start) over parts of five seasons with Seattle (2004-05), San Francisco (2007) and Boston (2010-11), tallying a 4.33 ERA (68 ER/141.1 IP) and 120 strikeouts while going 4-6 with one save.

Hottovy, 29, was selected to the active Major League roster on June 3 and made his Major League debut that night against Oakland, retiring the only batter he faced. He appeared in eight games out of the bullpen for the Red Sox overall, including six scoreless outings, and posted a 6.75 ERA (3 ER/4.0 IP). The left-hander has also combined for a 1.67 ERA (5 ER/27.0 IP) with one save, 28 strikeouts and five walks over 14 relief appearances between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket this season. Selected by Boston in the fourth round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Hottovy is in his eighth season in the Red Sox organization.
