Short-handed Cannons roll

CASEY’S depleted men’s firsts and seconds sides displayed the club’s increased depth, scoring strong wins over finals’ contenders on Saturday.

With “The Jet” Matthew Guastella grounded due to a hamstring tear and youngster Liam Allards out with a knee injury, the Cannons’ State League 3 side torched Knox 5-0 in a dominant start-to-finish performance.

Bryan Young worked his way into form with a brace and he had plenty of help, with goals to Matty Light, a rejuvenated Blake Edwards and the rangy Richard Hatch.

Missing brothers Mark and Stuey Dowel to injury, and with dependable backman Brendan Yeates unavailable, the Metro 1 East side managed to take out Knox, 3-1.

Chris Wood’s return from injury proved timely as he rotated through centre half and full back with midfield maestro Daniel Godfrey, helping the Cannons control play.

Godfrey started the rot with a tomahawk, but Knox equalised quickly. A penalty corner goal from Jarrod Beckwith after the half-time whistle was just what the doctor ordered. Goal-sneak Matty Gittus, in his return from a shoulder injury, put the result beyond doubt with an opportunistic far-post finish, midway through the second half.

Wood was easily best on ground, but it was a very even performance by the Cannons, who impressed with their zoning and ability to keep the ball in the forward half.

Both the ones and the twos sit on top of their respective ladders.

The thirds had the bye in Metro 3 South, but the fourths provided the only blip on the men’s radar, suffering their first defeat of the season, 1-0 at the hands of second-placed Bayside. Despite the loss, Metro 4 South still holds a handy five-point buffer at the top-of-the-table.

The women’s division had a tougher day at the office, the State League 3 side dropping its match-up with Knox 4-1, despite a goal from Emma Hatch.

Metro 1 South lost to Knox 2-1, with Jane Harris scoring to keep things close, and Metro 4 South netted the only women’s points of the round, a perfect 0-0 draw, also with Knox.

In the junior ranks, the Under 17 South side made it two on the trot thanks to a treble from Mitch Holden and a strike from Adam Welcome, rolling Southern United 4-0. The U15 South boys crushed Waverley 8-0.
