NEW MILFORD - Attempted homicide charges lodged in a May 20 shooting outside a New Milford bar were bound over for trial in Susquehanna County on Thursday. Jason Aronowitz, 42, New Milford, also faces charges of aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime with intent.

Witnesses testified Mr. Aronowitz tried to enter Parkview Bar but was turned away by the bartender before the shooting. One witness, Betty Whitney, said Mr. Aronowitz, after going to his truck, approached Michael Reid, who was leaving the bar. She said she saw him shove his hand into Mr. Reid's stomach and she heard two gunshots, but did not see the weapon.

Mr. Reid said he suffered several internal injuries.Bail for Mr. Aronowitz was set at $1 million, or a 10 percent cash equivalent.

LEHIGH TWP. - Three men and a juvenile face felony theft and burglary charges involving a rash of all-terrain vehicle thefts in Lehigh Twp., Wayne County, township police said Thursday.

Christopher E. Josiah, 22, Gouldsboro; Paul J. Ozack Jr., 19, and Anthony Rohr, 21, both of Scranton, were arraigned Wednesday and placed in the Wayne County Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail, Chief Kevin Froese said. The men and the juvenile were allegedly found trespassing Sunday while riding ATVs not belonging to them on state game lands. Chief Froese said police have been investigating a string of 28 ATV thefts since last summer.

HONESDALE - Wayne Highlands school directors unanimously approved a budget for 2011-12 that hikes property taxes.

The board approved the $43.6 million budget on Tuesday on an 8-0 vote, raising the millage rate to 14.1527 mills from 13.57 mills. One mill equals $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value.

The budget represents a 1.8 percent increase in spending. No teachers were furloughed despite a projected cut in state education funding, but the district will not replace six teachers and two support staff workers who retired, Superintendent Greg Frigoletto said.

NEWTON TWP. - Countryside Community Church will host a free fishing derby Saturday at the pond at Abington Heights Middle School.

Registration is not required and the derby is open to kids 1 to 15. It runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Prizes and entertainment will be available. Bait will be provided, but kids should bring their fishing poles, organizers said.

MILFORD -- U.S. Rep. Tom Marino, D-11, Hazleton, will not have office hours in Wayne and Pike counties today. The congressman's twice-monthly outreach with office hours will be in Pike and Wayne counties on July 8 and 22.

His Pike County office hours will be at 506 Broad St., Milford, from 9 to 11 a.m. To make an appointment, call 836-8020.
