Chippewas, Wolverines lose in first round of Women's NIT - Midland Daily News: Story Prep

NORMAL, Ill. -- Host Illinois State defeated Central Michigan 72-59 Thursday in the first round of the Women's NIT.

The Chippewas (20-11) committed 19 first-half turnovers and shot 24 percent in the second half, as the Redbirds (21-10) stayed undefeated at home.

CMU trailed 23-18 with eight minutes left in the first half, but Illinois State pulled away to take a 35-25 lead into the break. The Redbirds then built the lead to as much as 22 in the second half.

Taylor Johnson led CMU with 17 points, and Jalisa Olive and Shonda Long each scored 13.

CMU senior Kaihla Szunko snared 11 rebounds, becoming just the seventh player in Mid-American Conference history to reach 1,000 career rebounds. She is the third player in CMU history, and one of just three current players in Division I basketball, to have at least 1,000 career points, 1,000 career rebounds and 200 steals. She joins Maya Moore of Connecticut and Victoria Dunlap of Kentucky as the only players to reach those marks, and is the first in MAC history.

The Chippewas shot 29 percent from the floor, 22 percent from 3-point range. The Redbirds connected at 48 percent from the field.

YPSILANTI -- Host Eastern Michigan defeated Michigan 67-59 in the first round of the Women's NIT on Thursday.

The Wolverines were led by 20 points from sophomore Rachel Sheffer, while junior Courtney Boylan added 10 points. Sophomore guard Jenny Ryan added a game-high 12 rebounds for the Wolverines.

The Eagles led 31-25 at halftime and extended the lead to 10 early in the second half, but the Wolverines cut it to 40-35 before EMU used an 8-0 run midway through the half to take a 48-35 lead at the 10:52 mark. Trailing 52-40, the Wolverines went on a 10-1 run to cut the deficit to three points, but Eastern Michigan pulled away from there.

Michigan finishes at 17-13.
