Area Roundup: Dalton netters rule the courts over Northwest

Dalton swept a pair of matches against Northwest Whitfield in non-region action Monday at Edwards Park.

The Catamounts’ singles victories came from No. 1 Hunter Carson, 6-0, 6-0, No. 2 Price Puryear, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Nathan Bryant, 6-2, 6-1. In doubles, winners for the Cats (5-1) were No. 1 B.J. Rowland and Thomas DeLay, 6-2, 6-1, and No. 2 P.K. Bhatter and Mitchell Wilson, 6-0, 6-2.

The Lady Cats’ singles victories came from No. 1 Kara Pendley, 6-1, 6-3, and No. 2 Malaka Awad, 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, winners for Dalton (4-2) were No. 1 Vivian Butler and Courtney Morton, 6-2, 6-2, and No. 2 Sheridan Fromm and Jalika Joyner, 6-1, 6-2.

Heritage School 4, Christian Heritage 1: Ali McClure’s 8-6 pro-set win at No. 2 singles was the lone victory for the Lady Lions (2-1, 1-1 GISA Region 4-2A).

Christian Heritage’s boys shot a 354 in the Trinity Christian tournament at Dublin Country Club, led by a 12-over-par 84 from Cole Townsend.

A.J. Hooper (88), Cole Maffetone (90) and Blake Carver (92) also scored for the Lions in the 14-team GISA event, which was won by Stratford Academy’s 306, four shots better than Edmund Burke Academy.

The individual champion was Henry Person, with a 73. Lions coach Gary Whaley did not know where his team or individuals finished.

Murray County girls 104, Dalton 109: Paisley Puryear earned medalist honors with a 12-over-par 48 as she led the Lady Indians to victory in the nine-hole match at Indian Trace. Tillie Hughes also scored for Murray County.

Dalton’s results were not reported.

Northwest 5, Calhoun 1: Wade Terrell and Scout Plott each had two hits and Blake Phillips picked up the win on the mound in the road victory for the Bruins, who remained undefeated through five games to start the season.

Terrell also scored twice and Plot drove in a run. Brandon Smith had two sacrifice flies for his RBIs, while Cameron Alday had one RBI.

Phillips worked five innings, allowing a run on three hits and four walks while striking out six. Braden Jacobs allowed no hits and no walks in the final two innings as he held the lead.

Dalton girls 4, Northwest 1: The Lady Cats remained undefeated through four matches to start the season with two singles wins and a sweep of doubles play at home.

In singles, Dalton’s winners were No. 1 Katherine Clifford, 8-3, and No. 2 Mary Faith Erwin, 8-6. In doubles, it was No. 1 Michelle Rogers and Mary Virginia Ireland, 8-3, and No. 2 Chandler Renz and Claire Lutrick, 8-1.

Northwest’s winner was No. 3 Sara Richards, 8-5.

Dalton boys 4, Northwest 1: The Cats (3-1) swept doubles with victories from No. 1 Hector Prieto and Sagar Soni, 8-5 in pro-set play, and No. 2 Luis Rosales and Josh Satterfield. In singles, Dalton’s wins came from No. 1 Dago Acosta, 8-6, and No. 2 Nate Rich, 8-5.

Northwest’s lone win came in singles from No. 3 Braden Howard, 8-5.

• Murray County boys 184, Dalton 188: The Indians’ Blake Hammontree shot a 5-over-par 41 to lead his team to the four-stroke victory in a nine-hole match at Nob North.

Ethan Brookshire (47), Zack Varnell (48) and Tyler Rowland (48) also scored for Murray County. Dalton’s counting rounds came from Chris Kazmierski (40), Drew Smith (47), Alan Sanchez (47) and Jacob Brown (52).

• Dalton boys 2, Southeast Whitfield 0: Francisco Hernandez scored both of the Cats’ goals, overcoming a scoreless tie at halftime.

Alejandro Hernandez assisted on one of the goals, and Raymundo Bahena picked up the shutout in goal for Dalton (4-1), which outshot the Raiders 10-9.

North Murray boys 2, Murray County 1: The host Indians took a 1-0 lead early in the second half on a goal by Jose Ruiz, but Arturo Salaises pulled the Mountaineers (2-0) even with a goal and Oliver Nuñez converted a penalty kick with 15 minutes to play for the final margin.
