Three-time world silver medallist Johannes Rydzek has finally found his way to the top of the podium, scooping gold at the season-ending FIS Nordic combined World Cup in Lahti, Finland.
The 19-year-old made a name for himself at the Nordic Ski World Championships earlier this month, securing three silver medals but the German youngster ruled the roost on Saturday.
He racked up 119.6 points in the ski jumping section of the competition, good enough to sit 12th in the field and begin the cross-country race 1.12 minutes behind halfway leader Haavard Klemetsen of Norway.
But she stormed home 23:23.2 minutes in the cross-country race, the fifth fastest time of the field, to take gold in a photo finish after he was awarded the same combined time of 24:35.3 as compatriot and silver medallist Eric Frenzel.
Austria’s Felix Gottwald completed the podium just 0.9 seconds off the pace with the fastest cross-country time of the day while Klemetsen slipped down to seventh after a disappointing outing.
France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis, who had already sealed the overall World Cup title, came home in fifth place to finish the season with an impressive 894 points while Mikko Kokslien of Norway finished second with 656 despite finishing 16th in Finland.
Gottwald was harbouring feint hopes of catching Kokslien in second place and while he did take his place on the podium he had to make do with 638 points and third spot.
