Today in history: Rounding up Mobile's gamblers

• "Montgomery, Ala. -- Governor Emmet O'Neal to-night announced the staff, which is to serve as his escort of honor on all state occasions during the next four years."

Included among members of the staff were Francis J. Inge of Mobile, chief of ordnance; and A.G. Quina of Mobile, aid de camp with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

• "Warrants for fourteen gamblers were issued by Judge Chamberlain of the inferior court Saturday morning, upon the application of County Solicitor Norborne Clarke, who is emphatic in his determination to rid the city of the gambling fraternity, and who will be ably seconded in his efforts by Sheriff Palmer and his force of deputies, and eleven of those wanted were rounded up by deputies and taken to the county bastille."

• "This big propeller for the British steamer Jamaican, which was successfully cast at the plant of the Mobile Stove and Pulley Works some time ago, was placed upon the shaft of the steamer Saturday. The propeller is the largest ever cast in this section, weighing about 23,000 pounds."

• "Elaborate preparations are being made for the celebration of St. Patrick's Day, Friday, March 17, by the Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of Hibernians and St. Patrick's Benevolent Association. The celebration will begin in the forenoon with a parade of the members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and St. Patrick's Benevolent Association."

• "The directors of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce Wednesday elected officers for the fiscal year beginning April 1.

"The officers: Waverly B. Garner, president; Hugh M. Stanfill, first vice president; Edwin Warley, second vice president; and Frank Ellis, treasurer."

• "The department of music at Murphy High School will present the senior band, orchestra and glee clubs in a program Friday night in Murphy High School auditorium. L.L. Stookey, director of music in Mobile city and county public schools, announced Wednesday. In addition to the musical program, the dramatic club will present a one-act play, 'The Lost Elevator.'"

• "Mrs. Lila Porter of Mobile today became the South's No. 1 woman (tennis) star, replacing Beatrice Bryan of Memphis, who retired from active competition following her mariage last year."

• "Ion S. Walker, local businessman and civic leader, has been appointed to serve as Mobile area chairman for the observance of National Wildlife Week March 19-25."

• "J.M. Hull has not only a yard full of camellias growing at his home on Bay Road but also a growing collection of silver trophies. He picked up 10 more this year in a half dozen camellia shows along the Gulf Coast for addition to seven others collected in other shows."
