The Albany Athletics of the Albany Twilight League continued its run of success in the 81-year-old league, capturing the Twilight Championship for the third straight year and fifth time in six years while also finishing as the runner-up in the North Atlantic Regionals.
The Athletics finished 35-9 overall and 20-4 in the league. It was the sixth straight year the team led the league in wins.
In the league's best-of-five championship series, they came back from being down two games to none and swept the final three games. It was the first time since 1980 (Oppenheim Post came back over Finkles) a team has come back from two games down to win the championship in five games.
In their 11th consecutive regional tournament, the Athletics won two games before losing the championship to the Long Island Storm.
Jim Shook was league playoff MVP and went 6-2 on the year, while Chris Smith went 7-1, Casey Walsh was 5-1, Shawn Ryan was 4-0, Ryan White was 6-1, Bill Lawton was 4-1, and Steve Juedes was 3-2 this year.
Offensively, Justin Meagher hit .396 with 26 RBI while Jason Martin hit .325 with 37 RBI.
John Marcella hit .346, Zach Halloran hit 7 homers and had 30 RBI, and Ben Paniccia scored 29 runs in a 40 games. Catcher Justin Harris hit .369 and JP Sportman hit .361.
