What an interesting weekend of football.
West Virginia University, playing the equivalent of the Little Sisters of the Poor (at least before they got their check for coming to Morgantown), gives a horrible first-half performance and finds itself stunningly behind Norfolk State 12-10 after 30 minutes of uninspired play.
Then, it goes out and scores 45 second-half points.
Will the real West Virginia please stand up?
It will this Saturday at Maryland, when we'll find out everything we want to know about Dana Holgorsen's Mountaineers.
Marshall University, with a short week to prepare after last Sunday's long night in Morgantown, hands Doc Holliday the biggest win of his short tenure in Huntington by beating Southern Mississippi, one of the preseason favorites in Conference USA.
The Herd may have a special player in freshman quarterback Rakeem Cato. (Wasn't he the sidekick to the Green Hornet)?
Ohio State, intent on winning the Buckeye State championship, nearly loses to an in-state school as Toledo gave OSU all it wanted on Saturday at the Horseshoe. Toledo, by the way, plays Boise State on Friday night. Can you say shootout?
This sets up a huge Saturday night game at Peden Stadium against Marshall. Last year's game was decided when Ohio went for two in the closing seconds and failed to convert, giving Marshall a 24-23 win. This game looks like another photo finish.
The Red Devils lost a great deal of talent from last year's state runner-up squad so a dropoff would have been quite understandable. But this team looks like it has a chance to return to Wheeling Island.
Yes, there are some upcoming games that will severely test a young team under a first-year head coach. No one is talking going undefeated or winning the state title.
But a winning season and a playoff berth are more than realistic and would be a great start to Mike Dawson's effort to establish a winning program.
