Queens Park Rangers have quickly moved past that dismal opening day defeat they received at the hands of of Bolton Wanderers in performing admirably in the last two games.
The catalyst? New signings of course. Before the take-over uncertainties were put to bed, QPR had done very little in the transfer market. The signings they had secured looked a far cry from the likes who could keep them in the Premier League and my opinion on that has not changed since witnessing QPR demolish Newcastle last Monday only for Jay Bothroyd to spurn chance after chance after chance.
But now, Tony Fernandes is in charge. He wasted no time at all in giving Neil Warnock money to spend so QPR wouldn’t be wasting this chance to launch themselves well and truly back into the big time. Some of the signings QPR have made look fantastic and have improved the side ten-fold. Here’s three reasons why QPR’s relegation worries should disappear in the coming months.
New signings looking good
The business conducted in the last 3 or 4 days of the transfer window by Neil Warnock was phenomenal. Sure, they missed out on Craig Bellamy, but they secured Shaun Wright-Phillips and Armand Traore, Luke Young and Joey Barton.
Since the new signings have come in, they’ve secured 2 clean sheets and scored 3 goals. Shaun Wright-Phillips ripped Ryan Taylor apart at Loftus Road and caused Wolves similar headaches at Molineux. It’s easy to forget he’s a 36-cap England international.
The only potential worry is central defence. Letting Kaspar Gorkss go was a strange one and Danny Gabbidon has much to prove without getting yet another injury. Anton Ferdinand isn’t the most solid either, so some potential January shopping for Warnock to do there.
Much was made of Adel Taarabt’s stunning role in last season’s promotion campaign and whether or not he could step up a level. Well early evidence suggests he can, despite a shocker against Bolton. He combined well with Wright-Phillips in the 0-0 draw against Newcastle and again looked impressive against Wolves.
Alejandro Faurlin has been tidy in possession these past few weeks and scored his first Premier League goal this weekend at Wolves. Looks like the tribunal anguishes over him were well worth it.
The new signings already look good and they will continue to improve, gel and form a unit. Existing players should take a leaf out of Shaun Derry’s book and realise that they can all make the step up if they, like him, work hard and battle for every ball over the 90 minutes.
There’s more to come from the owners too. Having only finalised the take over late in the window, Warnock’s options to bring in players were limited. He’ll be drawing up an extensive list of targets for January though and should receive some financial backing no matter where QPR stand in the league. Expect defensive reinforcements.
