2010-11 bowling season winds down in Columbus

As the 2010-11 bowling season winds down, it is time to thank all of those who helped make this season a success. First, a big thanks to both Boulevard Lanes and Westbrook Lanes.

Boulevard’s Jeff Thiele, Terry Henke, Gus Schrad and the rest of their staff have done everything possible to make the season enjoyable. For anyone lucky enough to bowl a 279 game, they got a couple of Runza meal deals from Steve Hughes and Runza Restaurant. New World Inn has package deals for men that rolled games of 280 and higher. For the ladies it is for games of 249 and higher.

Those who shot 300 games at Boulevard also received cash or certificates from that pair of lane sponsors. A thank you goes to those sponsors: Bolte-Styskal Wireless, Hy-Vee, First National Bank, Ginger Moon Insurance, Wize Buys and the Columbus United StatesBowling Congress Bowling Association.

Westbrook’s John Eckholt, Joe Bruckner and their staff also worked hard at making the experience a good one too. Westbrook gave out certificates good for hamburger, fries and a pop for dutch 200 games, triplicates and all spare games. If a game of 298 or 299 received a certificate for a lunch special. Westbrook Lanes also gives out cash for 300 games and 800 series.

Just like Boulevard, each pair of lanes have a sponsor to give out cash or certificates for any 300 game shot on that pair. “Thank you” goes to Stack-n-Steak, Zywiec Construction, Manak Enterprises, Sleep Inn, Lotto Nebraska, Electrical Specialist Inc., Kevin ‘Ace’ Wagner of Ernst Auto and the Columbus USBC.

Speaking of the local association, I want to thank all the board members for their time they spend running our association. The officers are President Ashley Podliska, Vice Presidents Joan Davidshofer and Nancy Neemeyer. The directors are Shayna Hogan, Cindy Houdesheldt, Randy Luellman, Dee McCarthy, George A. McCarthy, Jeff Thiele or a Boulevard rep, Dirk White, John Wielgus and Judy Wurdeman. The youth directors are John Eckholt, Rick Krings, Jay “Norm” Olson, Lorie Martensen and Sarah Martensen. The association manager is Gary Muth.

I want to also thank the sponsors of the two teams that I bowl with: Chuck and Deb Jensen, of Stack-n-Steak, for the Wednesday team, and Ernst Toyota for the Tuesday team.

Boulevard Lanes’ Terry Henke had an easy time making his bowlers of the week picks as we saw a first time 300 bowler and a first time 700 series bowler. Craig Schneider shot his first-ever 300 game on his way to a 688 series to share the men’s bowler of the week honors. Rusty Steele was the other co-bowler of the week as he tossed his first 700 series with a 701 on games of 257, 256 and 188. The senior pick went to Tommie Williams for his 609 series on scores of 216, 221 and 172.

The women were led by Diana Olsufka and Shelley Renner for the past week. Olsufka rolled the high game for the week with a 264, while Renner had the high series with a 635. Dan Jeffryes tied Schneider for the high game as he shot his second career 300. High series for the week went to Brady Hoefer with a 754 on games of 252, 259 and 243.

Westbrook’s John Eckholt also picked co-bowlers of the week for the men as Mike Agostine and Pat Force shared the honor, while Ray Micek was named the senior bowler. Agostine rolled a 276 game and a 654 series, while Force had the high game for the week with a 300 and a 675 series. Micek tossed a 591 series with his top game being a 235.

On the ladies side, Marge Payzant had the high game for the week with a 244, while Podliska had the high series with a 647. The high series for the week was shot by Eckholt with a 771.

Until next week, get your calendars out. All the important dates and announcements for the summer leagues will be made.

Chuck McCarthy is a bowler whose column on city bowling will appear Tuesdays during the winter bowling season.
