Anyone for an OU-Nebraska BCS title game?

Oklahoma remains one of the most written-about teams in college football. First, a couple lines about Saturday night's opener against Tulsa:

"The Sooners' offense should hum, but look for Tulsa to score."

(If the Damaris Johnson-less Hurricane does score, say in the upper 20s or higher, the Sooners' defense isn't what it's cracked up to be.)

"Bob Stoops never has had a problem running up the score to impress the pollsters. New Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship is in for a long night."

"Bob Stoops has a lot of respect for new Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship, but that won't slow down Landry Jones and a terrific collection of skill talent."

(Feldman used to write for ESPN. Then he wrote a book with Mike Leach, who was/is at war with ESPN analyst Craig James. Then he was suspended. Now he writes for CBS. Good for him. No, make that great for him.)

Back to the Sooners, do they still stack up as a national championship contender? Let's take a look…

"Oklahoma is No. 2 here… Why not first? Oklahoma, frankly, has never delivered much bang for the buck. The Sooners have been No. 1 a record 20 weeks in the BCS standings, yet their only BCS title came in 2000. Contrast that with LSU, which has won two titles despite spending only two weeks at No. 1."

"The SEC has won five straight BCS titles and clearly is the most dominant conference in college football. So it would make perfect sense that my prediction for this year's BCS national champion is… Oklahoma. Yes, Oklahoma."

"It's more likely than not the Sooners will lose a game somewhere along the line. What could hurt them? Shaken confidence, if they fall at Florida State. A sleeping giant, if Texas gets better quickly. Or a familiar thorn such as Texas A&M, Oklahoma State or Missouri."

(Florida State or OSU? Definite danger. Texas, Texas A&M or Missouri? I think not.)

"The Sooners stumble in their second game and first road show (at Florida State)… They settle for some consolation sizzle in the Fiesta Bowl price and a match with Nebraska."

(When does the Fiesta Bowl officially become boring? When you wind up there after everyone thought you'd be playing for a national title in New Orleans. No offense, Huskers.)

"In the irony of ironies, it will be two teams that had played in the same conference since 1919 – Oklahoma and Nebraska – slugging it out in the Superdome for college football supremacy. How's that for an unexpected story line?"

(Beats the "Battle of Big Reds" story line from Phoenix.)

"Oklahoma is led by sensational QB Landry Jones, who returns all of his weapons and offensive linemen. But don't be fooled – OU also boasts a ferocious defense that was top 10 in sacks and turnovers. The question now isn't whether they win it all – it's by how much."

(The Daily Campus is the UConn student newspaper. I'd say the Sooners made an impression on young Mr. Callahan at the Fiesta Bowl last January.)

"Oklahoma just has it all – elite talent with few holes. The holes it does have will be coached up in due time by Bob Stoops."

(The Maneater is the student paper at Missouri. Atkins picks OU to beat Stanford for the national title. The Sooners have officially locked up the 18-to-23-year-old demographic.)
