More than 2,000 runners crawled, slipped, slid and jumped through piles and puddles of mud Saturday morning as part of the Murrieta Mud Run, the first of what organizers plan to make an annual event.
The runners found themselves covered in mud from head to toe as they crossed the finish line, with a fire truck standing by to hose them down.
"It was fun," said Erika Barsby, 13, of Canyon Lake, who was one of the youngest runners in the first group of competitive racers. "I like getting really muddy."
Melissa Villegas, of Winchester, makes her way through the final mud pit during the 2011 Murrieta Mud Run at Town Square Park in Murrieta on Saturday morning.
Runners were split into seven groups, beginning the 5K race at Town Square Park. They ran through neighborhood streets and two fields filled with about a dozen muddy obstacle courses, including deep pits, tall mounds and netting they had to crawl under.
A final obstacle of an 8-foot high hill surrounded by water awaited runners at the park before the finish line.
