The Bears decided to keep undrafted free agent, Dane Sanzenbacher on their final 53-man roster. (AP)

The list of cuts is one element of interest when NFL rosters are trimmed to their required 53 players. Of even greater importance is who’s left and what it says about where the team is thinking, where it feels vulnerable and where it may turn for additional help.

The Bears reduced their roster to 53 by various cuts, contract terminations and settlements. Those remaining give a preview of sorts into the 2011 Bears directions.

The normal 25-25 split between offense and defense needed a slight alteration because of injury concerns on defense. The offense kept eight linemen (as many as 10 have occasionally been retained) because of the versatility with reserves, and. That allowed an extra defensive linemen to be kept for insurance withhurting.

Look for the Bears to add a linebacker from the cuts elsewhere in the NFL. With only five, the defense is perilously thin at a position that has had injuries in the recent past.

The current lineups in various position groups:

Comment: Easy call; look for Enderle to challenge for No. 2 next year.

Running backs (3),,.

Comment: Offense wants more than 2.4 ypc. from Forte’s backups.

Wide receivers (6),,,,,.

Comment: Sanzenbacher the No. 1 surprise of camp/preseason.

Tight ends (3),,.

Comment: Adams a de facto fullback.

Fullbacks (1).

Comment: With Adams, a strong indicator the Bears plan to run.

Offensive line (8),,,,, Omiyale, Spencer, Williams.

Comment: All three backups can play multiple positions, allowing an extra body for needs on defense.

Defensive line (10),,,,, Wootton,,,, Nick Reed .

Comment: Addison and Reed wouldn’t have lasted on practice squad and Wootton won’t be ready for a couple weeks.

Comment: Losingto IR creates significant depth problem.

Defensive Backs (11),,,,,,,,,,.

Comment: Cornerback is thin and this group needs to produce special-teams help.

Comment: None needed. Gould, Mannelly among the best, Podlesh an offseason priority.
