Russell Martin's one-out, seventh-inning triple into the right-center field gap gave the Yankees a lead they wouldn't relinquish on the way to New York's 4-2 win over the Red Sox Thursday night at Fenway Park. The pivotal hit, which came off Sox reliever Daniel Bard, scored Chris Dickerson and Jesus Montero.
Taking the loss was Alfredo Aceves, who allowed both Dickerson and Montero to reach. It marked the first time Aceves had surrendered a run since Aug. 10, a span that encompassed seven outings. Bard would also allow the Yanks to claim an insurance run when Eric Chavez singled in Martin.
Red Sox starter Jon Lester only allowed one run, but he could get through just five innings, thanks in part to a 43-pitch first inning. The lefty gave up seven hits, striking out six and walking three while finishing with 114 pitches.
Yankees starter A.J. Burnett was in line to take the loss before the Martin hit, having left with a 2-1 deficit thanks to Dustin Pedroia's two-run homer in the fourth inning. The home run was the second baseman's 18th of the season (a career high), and drove in Adrian Gonzalez. Pedroia was the only Red Sox player to notch more than one hit, going 2-for-4.
The Sox loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth against Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who walked both Jed Lowrie and Jacoby Ellsbury and gave up a single to Marco Scutaro. But Rivera fanned Gonzalez to end the threat and draw New York to within a half-game of the first-place Sox.
Red Sox pitchers finished the game throwing 203 pitches. The Yankees stranded 13 runners.
