Yet another great offense/awful defense team from Conference USA --- and won that snagged 10 games in part because of a handsome plus-17 turnover margin last season.

On Saturday, Notre Dame will open practice, and coach Brian Kelly will survey the steaming expanse of practice fields and his voice will spew acrid demands for drills and players to move faster, faster, faster.
This in a moment when Notre Dame is all caught up, at last.
On that practice field, Michael Floyd likely will cut and juke and snare passes when, in any other era in the history of school disciplinary matters, the All-America receiver simply wouldn't be around.

CHICAGO — Over the two-day event that is Big Ten Football Media Days, Nebraska fans have gotten more than their fill of Husker coverage.
From head coach Bo Pelini’s thoughts on the upcoming season, to Big Ten Network interns asking players what kind of a cell phone they have, almost every possible question has been posed and answered by the Huskers.
We are continuing our Preseason College Football Countdown, ranking every team at the Football Bowl Subdivision level from 120 down to 1.
Matt Murschel compiled the rankings based on several factors including: returning letterwinners, returning starters, 2010 performance, coaching staff changes, strength of schedule and strength of the conference.
Carroll College offensive lineman Nick Petrusha, a former Capital High standout, was recently announced as a nominee for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the most prestigious off-field honor in college football.
The award recognizes athletes for community involvement. From the 132 nominees, a record number in the award’s 20-year history, two 11-player Good Works Teams will be selected in late September: one for the FBS and the other made up of members of the NAIA, FCS, Division II and DIII.
What was your first impression of Todd Haley when he was hired as the new head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs?
Many football fans in Kansas City thought of the footage that was played by many media outlets where Haley got into a shouting match with Anquan Boldin. To many people, Haley came off as a bad guy.
ST. JOSEPH | After several days and increasing fan concern, the Chiefs finally filled a hole at nose tackle, signing veteran Kelly Gregg on Saturday.
Gregg, 34, is a Wichita native who played the last 11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. Gregg, a 6-foot, 320-pound defensive lineman, also has played for Philadelphia and Cincinnati.
Minnesota coach Jerry Kill talks with reporters during Big Ten football Media Days in Chicago.
With a track record that includes some very good football work done at both Northern and Southern Illinois universities, Jerry Kill's qualifications as a gridiron boss are evident.
Illinois: Illinois senior A.J. Jenkins made a considerable jump in his receiving production from his sophomore to his junior season. He caught a total of 21 passes in his first two seasons with the Illini before making 56 receptions for 746 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Now, as a senior, Jenkins believes he's capable of even more and has set some lofty goals. "I want 1,000-plus yards, 10-plus touchdowns and around 80 catches," Jenkins said. "So, I'm ready to have a real big year this year."
New faces prevalent in Big Ten
A string of dismissals has four coaches making their league debut in the 2011 season.

CHICAGO - When the Iowa football team opens fall camp next Friday, coach Kirk Ferentz expects fullback Brad Rogers to be on the field with the Hawkeyes.
A sophomore who saw action in 11 games last season before a heart condition forced him off the field as Iowa prepared for the Insight Bowl, Rogers is listed as the Hawkeyes' second-team fullback on the preseason depth chart but has not participated in workouts since December.
season is right around the corner. The recent onslaught of football has been a fresh breath of air for fans everywhere. Before we know it, we'll be involved in our fantasy drafts, tailgating and putting in overtime on the couch.
Fans have been sent into hysteria with all the roster moves this week. Social media outlets are all things football of late. People are living, eating and breathing football right now. It's been a remarkable week.
OWINGS MILLS - A blockbuster contract for Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and some breathing room under the salary cap could both be in the Baltimore Ravens' near future.
The Ravens intend to launch contract talks toward a long-term extension with their franchise player within the next three to four days of training camp.
After missing the first two practices of training camp while on the non-football injury list, Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs has passed his conditioning test and physical, and will likely participate in practice tomorrow.
Head coach John Harbaugh said that he's "pretty sure" that Suggs, who has been bothered by a hamstring ailment, will be good to go Saturday for the Ravens' first full contact practice.
BALTIMORE What stood out from Jimmy Smith's first NFL practice is that it didn't look like it was the cornerback's first NFL practice.
The Ravens' 2011 first-round pick jammed wide receivers at the line of scrimmage. He ripped a pass away over the middle. And he picked up the Ravens' defense in a few meetings.
Chanute High School running back Eric Bowman had a breakout senior year in 2010 and was rewarded with a Kansas Shrine Bowl selection, one of eight running backs listed on the East roster.
Not that Bowman played badly when he was at Girard High School in 2008 and 2009 (Bowman earned CNC honorable mention his sophomore year), but he did not have a season like 1,742 yards and 24 touchdowns on 171 carries — 10.2 yards per carry and 158.4 yards per game, earning Bowman All-State honors in Class 4A.
Free agent cornerback Chris Carr is coming back to the Ravens, signing a four-year deal Saturday.
He confirmed the news on his Twitter feed, writing, "Well bmore. I'm backkkkkkkkkkkkk! Very excited to finish my career here."
Bringing back Carr, who was the Ravens’ top cornerback in 2010, became a priority when Josh Wilson, the team’s other starting cornerback down the stretch, signed with the Washington Redskins.
Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha joined fellow Pro Bowlers Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Asante Samuel in the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive secondary, shunning the New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers.
Asomugha, 30, a four-time All Pro selection during his eight-year career with the Oakland Raiders, was considered the top free agent available this year.
The Chicago Bears signed several free agents on Friday, among them wide receiver Roy Williams.
Williams, who inked a one-year deal, was waived by the Cowboys earlier this week following two unsuccessful seasons in Dallas. The 2006 Pro Bowl selection has totaled 42 touchdowns during his career, but has not caught more than 38 passes in any of last four seasons.
The New Orleans Saints, who already have done a good job of keeping their own free agents, wrapped up another important piece late Friday night.
The team announced it has agreed to terms with strong safety Roman Harper. Contract details were not available immediately, but the return of Harper solidifies the defensive secondary.
The New England Patriots finalized a trade for standout defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth, acquiring him Friday from the Washington Redskins for an undisclosed draft choice.
Haynesworth had a stormy relationship with Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan last year, starting with the two-time Pro Bowl selection's dislike of the coach's 3-4 defensive scheme. It ended with a suspension for the final four games of the season for conduct detrimental to the club.

Proving once and for all there was not a single shred of doubt the NFL and it’s players would return to cash checks with plenty of zeroes on them for the 2011 season, we are now faced with much tougher questions than the negotiations themselves.

Former Nebraska quarterback Cody Green appears to be headed to the University of Tulsa to play his final two college seasons.
Green, rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com out of high school, communicated his intentions to the TU coaching staff, the Tulsa World learned, but repeated efforts to contact the 6-foot-4, 235-pounder were unsuccessful.
CHICAGO -- The turning point in Nebraska's final season in the Big 12 in 2010 came in the second half of the Cornhuskers' 9-6 loss at Texas A&M on Nov. 20.
After then-freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez re-injured his right ankle in the first half, he was berated on the sideline by coach Bo Pelini for, of all things, answering his father's phone call in the locker room. Nebraska's players are prohibited from making phone calls during games.
Counted as one of the fiercest rivalries in college football, the Utah-BYU Holy War seems to never end and even though the two teams will not be in the same conference this year, the animosity and genuine dislike of each other has only grown stronger.
If it's a Holy War, which team's new direction is really more in the "right"? With Utah joining the Pac-12 and BYU going Independent in football, which team is positioned better for the future?
Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah has done everything he can to escape the fate of Republicans who lost primaries to the Tea Party in 2010. Despite working on improving his relationship with Tea Party and fiscal conservative groups in the past year, the alarm has been sounded and Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, appears to be making steps toward an announcement sometime after Labor Day.
CHICAGO — OK, so we can’t prove this. But you can trust our estimate that, over two days in which the coach and three players from each Big Ten school met with the media, the name Taylor Martinez was spoken 10 times more than the name Kirk Cousins.
And Nebraska’s quarterback — unlike Cousins, his counterpart from Michigan State — wasn’t even here.
Judging from the phone messages and emails, you find it just as annoying as I do.
But get used to it. The Mexican government ads on XX Sports Radio 1090 aren't going anywhere.
The spots, which often run three in a row and as many as 10 an hour, are part of a Mexican licensing agreement, according to Tex Meyer, the new vice president and general manager at 1090.

Today, though, we're highlighting some of the less obvious "story line" games, not including annual rivalry games and the blatantly obvious great non-conference matchups. These are not necessarily the best games of the season (though some will be important on a national scale), but these are games interesting for the back stories or the personalities involved in addition to the action on the field.
If you can't finish a book, hurl it down BIBLIO BY PRADEEP SEBASTIAN
One day, Lynne Sharon Schwartz, a book lover asleep in the shadow of her books, woke up and asked herself the classic addict's question: "What has reading done for me? What do I have then, after years of indulgence? A feel, a texture, an aura: the fragrance of Shakespeare, the crisp breeze of Tolstoy, the carnal stench of the great Euripides. Are they worth the investment of a life?" Schwartz's Ruined by Reading: A Life in Books is a fiercely intelligent, unsentimental meditation on reading. She never really answers the question she raises, except to say that no girl's life was ever ruined by a book, nor saved by one either. Don't, she warns, look at fictional characters because even the best of them "travel in confusion and come to a bad end." And this, Schwartz informs us, is precisely why their lives are worth inventing. So that the reader can counsel them: "do this, do that, don't forget to mail that letter, don't get on that plane, divorce him, marry her, look over your shoulder for heaven's sake - but to no avail."

"Mr. Ray" Nguyen loves Eagle Rock. He loves the neighborhood so much, in fact, that when it came time to open his beautiful, new, upscale restaurant Halong Bay, he put it right next door to Lemongrass, the bright, popular Vietnamese restaurant on Colorado Boulevard that he also owns.
Some might perceive the move as counter-intuitive. But longtime businessman Nguyen, fondly referred to as "Mr. Ray," sees the restaurants as complementing each other rather than competing.

When it comes to the college football postseason, there is a clear divide between the BCS bowls and the rest in terms of both compensation and prestige.
The Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Fiesta Bowl each pay out hefty, eight-digit checks to their participants each year while hosting only the very best teams in the sport.
Craig Thompson wears many hats as Mountain West Conference commissioner.
He is a salesman, administrator and manager.
But will the leader of Boise State’s new conference wave a blue and orange cap in the air like Western Athletic Commissioner Karl Benson did so frequently and ferociously?
Thompson must walk a fine line. He must look out for the best interest of his league, first and foremost, while also not play favorites.

The BCS needs to be reformed. I try to defend it, but when UConn football earns a bid last season, it's hard to try to stick up for such a flawed system. If The Syracuse Orange earn a bid this season, it will be even more indefensible.
When you think of college football dominance, Syracuse isn't necessarily the first team that comes to mind. The university produced Mike Williams and Donavon McNabb, but in today's college football world, this is a team that simply doesn't even come close to deserving a BCS bowl bid.

Officially, A.J. Green's Independence Bowl jersey cost $1,000 -- at least to the agent that bought the outfit from the then-Georgia wide receiver. But in recent months, it's become vogue to question whether the jersey cost Green and Georgia far more.

Return to bowl game part of Oregon State incentive

There has been plenty of talk about making major changes in the way NCAA handles violations, and on Wednesday in Las Vegas, Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said it’s time for action.
Thompson addressed the media at the Red Rock Resort and did not hold back when discussing the recent spate of college football teams drawing the eye of the NCAA’s investigators. The commissioner said what is being done is not enough.
The Spartans had a lot of success in 2010, posting an 11-win season — the most in school history — and winning the program’s first Big Ten championship in 20 years.
But the Spartans also fell short in big games, getting stomped by Iowa (37-6) and later Alabama in the Capital One Bowl (49-7).
In the first year under Jimbo Fisher, the Florida State Seminoles finished with an overall record of 10-4. It was the first time the Seminoles reached double-digit wins since they went 10-3 in 2003. Florida State won the ACC Atlantic with a 6-2 conference mark, but would go on to lose to Virginia Tech 33-44 in the ACC Championship Game. However, Fisher and the Seminoles would conclude the season with an impressive 26-17 win over South Carolina in the Chik-fil-A Bowl.
The Ohio State University football program is unquestionably one of the most distinguished programs in college football history. They own the highest win percentage in the sport since 1904. Some have come to associate the university with its Big Ten dominance followed by big game futility, but despite those recent setbacks, the university has had it’s share of memorable events. There are almost too many to name, but the most notable five are:
Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel has completed 67.3 percent of his career passes for 1,678 yards with six touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Manuel isn't the typical first-year starter
Most college programs would be in trouble on the offensive side of the football after losing a three-year starter at quarterback to graduation and the first round of the NFL Draft, but it's possible Florida State doesn't lose much with E.J. Manuel taking over under center. While 2011 will be his first season as the Seminoles' full-time starter, the 6-5, 234-pounder has started games in the past when Christian Ponder was banged up and had more successes than failures. As a matter of fact, Manuel has already led the 'Noles to a pair of wins in bowl games, defeating West Virginia in the Gator Bowl to send legendary coach Bobby Bowden into retirement a winner when Ponder was out with a shoulder injury, and then topping South Carolina a year later in the Chick-fil-A Bowl when Ponder was forced to the sideline after an ineffective first quarter.
Gunner Kiel is the nation’s top-rated quarterback in the Class of 2012 according to Rivals.com, and has been offered a scholarship by such programs as Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC and Wisconsin. The Columbus, IN, product, however, has decided to stay in-state, and thus given head coach Kevin Wilson his biggest verbal commitment by far since he took over the Indiana program last December.
After spending six seasons in San Francisco, former Riverview High star David Baas will be coming closer to home and his wife and two children in Sarasota.
The New York Giants came to terms with Baas on Wednesday, a day after releasing veteran offensive linemen Shaun O'Hara, Shawn Andrews and Rich Seubert to clear salary-cap room.

We look forward to the maturity she will bring to the team, and her athletic ability from her track background will help her as she adjusts to the college game.”Stowers will have junior eligibility at Bethel.Florian is a 5-10 forward who comes to Bethel from nearby McPherson College. At McPherson, she averaged 2.5 points a game as a junior and .63 points a game as a sophomore.“Brandi comes to us after three years at McPherson College, where she was a big piece of their front-court puzzle,” Fox said. “She has dealt with the adversity of three coaching changes and has seemingly adjusted well to the demands and styles of each. The loss of her major, though, was an integral part of her decision, and we welcome her maturity, experience and presence she’ll bring to our front court.”Brianna Bates is a 6-0 forward from Midway High School in Waco, where she averaged 1.8 points, .7 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals a game. She chose Bethel over the University of Saint Mary and Nebraska Wesleyan.“Shelby was a young lady we saw a couple of years ago while recruiting Melissa Irwin,: Fox said. “We’re glad to have her joining us. She is a kid along the lines of a Rachael Bachman or Amanda Hiebert in body type, which will suit her well as she adjusts to the physical nature of the college game.”Goniea intends to major in nursing at Bethel.Stephens attended Southern Coffey County High School, where she was a 5-8 forward. She averaged 13 points and nine rebounds a game. She was a second-team All-Lyon County League selection and a Class 1A all-state honorable mention. She is a Flinthills Optimist All-Star selection. She chose Bethel over Pratt Community College, Barton County Community College and Baker.“Krissy comes to us late in the process, but we’re happy to have her become part of our program,” Fox said. “She’s a kid, who in high school, had to play with her back to the basket, but we expect her to become a versatile player who can face the basket and create some mismatches that way. We look forward to seeing her game expand as the years progress.”Stephens also competed in volleyball and track, where she is a three-time state qualifier. She is a member of the FFA, choir, forensics, student council, Scholar’s Bowl and a Sunflower Girls’ State representative. She is a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she is active in the youth group. She chose Bethel over Hesston, Southwestern and Bethany.“Jessica is another great young lady we are excited to add to the program,” Fox said. “She has a high-energy motor, and coming from Conway Springs, we know those kids have been taught the value of work ethic and discipline. Ebie will be a tremendous edition to our family, and to Bethel College.”Ebenkamp competed in volleyball, where she was second-team all-league. She is a member of the student council, the Cardinal Council, the National Honor Society and the band. She was on the principal’s honor roll for four years and was ranked third in her class. She intends to major in biology.Durant is a 5-11 forward from Standley Lake High School, where she averaged 11,5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals a game as a senior. She was first-team all-conference as a senior and honorable mention as a junior and sophomore. She won the Heart of the Gator Award.“We are extremely excited to add Taylor to our women’s basketball program,” Fox said. “With the graduation of both Holly (Anthony) and Sam (Askew), we needed to add some size, and not only does Taylor fit there, but she brings a level of athleticism to her position that will allow her to be multi-dimentional as she grows into the college game.”Durant competed in volleyball, where she was a team captain and all-conference honorable mention. She was in the freshman mentoring program. She intends to major in early childhood education or athletic training.Brown is a 5-5 freshman guard who attended Putnam City North High School.“We’re excited to add another great young lady in Ajai to our family,” Fox said. “We look forward to watching her game expand through the years as she adjusts and adapts to the college game.”Brown was active in DECA. She intends to major in business marketing.Wallsten is a 5-6 guard who played at Central Christian High School in Hutchinson as a senior, leading the team to a Class 1A, Division II runner-up berth.“We’re extremely happy to add Val to our freshman class,” Fox said. “She’s a young lady we’ve had on our radar for three or four years now after she came to our camp. Val will immediately bring quickness to our backcourt, and she utilizes it very well to disrupt offenses. She has shown the ability to get on a roll with her shot, so we’re looking forward to another player who can help us stretch the defense. She’s a very good student, and we’re anxious to see her progress through the years.”Suchsland is a 5-7 guard from Phillipsburg High School, where she averaged 8.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals a game.“Another tremendous young lady who will be an asset to the college and to our team,” Fox said. “A multi-sport athlete, Megan will bring that athletic ability and tough mindset to our practices, which will make everyone around her get better. She’s a great kid who we feel will just blossom as she encounters, and learns to deal with, athletes at this level.”Zerger is a 5-6 guard from Hutchinson High School.“Like Val, she’s just an absolute blur on the court,” Fox said. “But she’s also shown me that she can have very good patience and control of the team on the offensive end when it’s needed. Brie demonstrates a quite competitiveness that, I think, burns deeply within her, and we’re excited to see her as an addition to both Bethel College and to our program.”Bright is a 5-7 guard from Sedgwick High School.
Think back, for just a moment, to when you were 21 years old (if you aren't already) and imagine this scenario.
Your performance on a 100 yard-long field of grass three hours a day, once a week, four months a year determines the pride and self-worth of an entire state of two million people.
Now, taking this scenario even further, imagine that your entire team's ups and downs will almost solely be attributed to you.
I followed the music and ended up in the middle of the park, surprised that there weren't too many people there- maybe a few hundred? He deserved a few thousand, at least. During his last song there were flashes of lightning illuminating the night sky followed by a torrential downpour at the end of the song. Some ran away, some (including me) ran for a few small tents that were set up for the sound guys and stayed for the encore song (undoubtedly worth it- wet clothes dry but his voice will stay in my mind forever).
Nothing to do this weekend? Floyd County has you covered. About 45 minutes away from Blacksburg, one of the state’s greatest music festivals will occur this weekend, July 28 through July 31.
With over 90 performing groups, FloydFest holds promise for music lovers of all types.
This is their 10th year, so staff and volunteers are gearing up for an incredible weekend. They’ve obtained a variety of renowned acts, as well as many local bands to perform for the weekend.
I was very impressed to see openly gay contestants on the NBC's breakout talent-based competition The Voice. The more established counterpart American Idol has yet to see such a feat.
The LGBT hopefuls on The Voice are fiery Vicci Martinez, the seasoned Beverly McClellan, the bluesy Nakia and Tyler Robinson, who probably will be best known as the gay Mormon. The cast of The Voice will have a concert at The Rosemont Theatre, 5400 N. River, Rosemont, on Tuesday, Aug. 2.
This August, the girl who grew up before her fans' eyes will grace the cover of Harper's Bazaar magazine. Hermione, played by Watson, was one of Harry Potter's sidekicks in his mystical world of magic.
In the past, they've done the summer program at their school. But now that they are 7 and 9, I wanted to give them the opportunity to try new things in new places with new people, and -- if I was lucky -- have them come away with a new appreciation of what they already have.

Welcome to my first post! I'm John Maxwell, the vice president of data protection product management at Quest Software. I'll be tag-teaming this blog along with my colleague, Jon Rolls.
For my first blog, I'll hit on a very hot topic: How companies can save costs by reducing storage footprints.
Quest vRanger Pro 5.0 features a number of tools designed to reduce the amount of data you back up by leveraging technologies that filter out unchanged and deleted data. Exploiting vRanger's ability to minimize backup data requires enabling a few functionalities in the proper manner. This blog will take you through the steps required to fully leverage vRanger's data reduction capabilities.
The Russian delegation that is back to Moscow after visiting the United States has failed to persuade the American side of the need to provide written guarantees that the US missile defense system in Europe is not going to be targeted against Russia.
Now, the issue will be elevated to the presidential level at the meeting due before the end of the year, Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said. There has been little progress in negotiations on Russia’s demanding guarantees that the future system will not be directed against its strategic nuclear forces, he admitted.

The Walking Dead is returning for its second season in October; and when it does, the survivors, now back on the run since the CDC self-destructed, will be running into some new characters. One of those new characters is a love interest for Glenn.
Glenn's getting some romance!
One of the new characters being introduced at Hershel's farm is Maggie, who is being played by Lauren Cohan (Chuck, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural); and she's going to be the answer for those wondering if on the show, Glenn would be getting his own story line or a love interest. Bringing Maggie into Glenn's life is going to change things a bit for the character, according to Steven Yeun: "Playing Glenn before, he lived to serve. He lived to have a role and to leave a mark on the world, even if he dies a martyr. I love the idea that someone who didn't really have anything to live for, has so much more to live for [now]."
Questions abound when it comes to the 2011 UCLA football team, and there will be plenty of questions directed the way of Coach Rick Neuheisel concerning the direction of the program and his future within it.
The real answers, of course, will come during the season when we find out if the Bruins can improve upon their disappointing 2010 season, but we’ll start hearing from Neuheisel and the other coaches in the newly aligned Pac-12 Tuesday during the annual conference media day.
I know, yet again, I’m late on this but if you haven’t seen it the first image from Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead video game was shown at this years San Diego Comic-con. The image features the games two characters Lee (on the right) a convict that, while being transported from a prison, is involved in a car crash when the transport vehicle that is transferring him swerves to avoid a walker, and Clementine (on the left) a little girl that Lee comes across after her parents have been killed. And like we’ve repoted earlier Kirkman has indicated that while the game won’t feature any familiar survivors as playable characters, we may come across some of them throughout the course of the game. Also, Telltale Games has said that the game will rely heavily on player decisions to determine the outcome of the game though these decisions won’t always be the standard type of moral decisions gamers are accustomed to because, in some cases, players will have to choose which characters to save and which ones to sacrifice.
SAN DIEGO — Here's a rundown of TV shows introduced at this year's Comic-Con.
'Terra' firma: Fans finally got a look at Fox's special-effects spectacular, "Terra Nova," as the pilot episode was shown in public for the first time.
"Terra Nova," executive-produced by Steven Spielberg and due Sept. 26, follows a 22nd-century family that journeys 85 million years into the past to try to find a way to save an overpolluted and overpopulated Earth. Executive producer Brannon Braga ("24") describes the series as "aspirational. ... It's humanity's new hope, but they carry baggage with them."
With Tuesday’s official release of the inaugural Pac-12 preseason media poll, Arizona Wildcats football fans may want to start tempering their expectations for the 2011 season.
The Wildcats were picked to finish fourth…in the Pac-12 South. A division in which Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Cal, and Washington are not a part of.
Kansas State used a 4-0 start to help it become bowl eligible in 2010. The Wildcats only won three games the rest of the way, but it was enough to earn them a Pinstripe Bowl matchup with Syracuse, a game they lost 36-34.
The Wildcats were excited about the opportunity to play postseason football after being left at home the year before. The goal is to get back to a bowl, which won’t be easy given the schedule. Kansas State has a non-conference date at Miami (Florida) and must play all six of the original Big 12 South schools.
Hello everybody, happy Tuesday, as always I sincerely hope all is well. After a very depressing weekend in the news with the tragedy in Norway and the death of Amy Winehouse, the week started off with some positive news, granted not positive enough to erase either story but something we can rally around, and that news is, FOOTBALL IS BACK!
Fortunately and unfortunately, this has been the path the Tulsa football program has taken the last five years.
First it was Steve Kragthorpe jetting for Louisville after guiding the Golden Hurricane to back-to-back bowl games in 2005 and 2006. Last year came Todd Graham's turn as he cashed in on the opportunity at the University of Pittsburgh, sparked by his Tulsa resume which included three 10-win seasons.
New England Patriots guard Logan Mankins will sign his franchise tag tender and report to training camp this week, The Boston Globe reported, citing ESPN.
Mankins, one of the 10 plaintiffs in the Brady et al v. the National Football League et al lawsuit, held out for the first seven games of the 2010 season after refusing to sign a restricted free-agent tender by the June deadline. He returned in early November and started the final nine games, making the Pro Bowl in the process.
Dallas Cowboys failed to be in the playoffs in 2010 as the team went on to have a record of 6-10. Cowboys was the big favorite to be in the Super Bowl but the team couldn’t win games especially those close matches.
Quarterback Tony Romo will still anchor the team’s offense as the team will figure out how score more points to win games. The defense last season was fantastic but it wasn’t enough for the team to be in the playoffs with only six wins.
Football is back, and with with every new season comes a new set of predictions. One of the most popular predictions other than who will win the Super Bowl is determining who has the best shot to win NFL MVP.
Last year New England'sTom Bradytook home the award for the second time, beating outMichael Vickand becoming the first player to receive all 50 votes. While he is still a candidate to win it again this season, he will have strong competition from several other players who all had solid seasons last year. Let's take a look at the ten most likely players to win the MVP award this coming season.
The Steelers' 12-4 record in 2010 was an an attribute once again to their superior play on the defensive side of the ball and their ability to navigate the heaviest-hitting division in theNFL(5-1 in 2010) makes for a competitive team year in, year out.
Though the Steelers aren't faced with an absurdly difficult schedule, they will still have to find a way to beat some of the toughest teams and some of the best quarterbacks in the league.
Well, football has hit our lips. And everything just seems to be better now that it has. The players and the owners are linked arm and arm and at peace, the heat wave blanketing the country appears to be at least temporarily over and it’s finally okay to plan your fantasy football drafts without asterisks and contingency plans attached to every proposed draft date. Perhaps most uplifting of all is the realization that we won’t have to spend our Sundays in the fall watching professional bowling at the local sports bar. As tempting as the thought of rooting forDave Bereswas, I’d rather cheer on Drew Brees.
Every time I write a “World According to Gold” piece, gold is setting a new record, among a new crop of bubble-callers, and still the world hesitates to pile into gold for fear of getting burned. Many of those who have doubled or tripled their money have since died, retired, or simply kept on making money investing, succumbing to the addictive quality of wealth. The only other consistency with the new old record and another eponymous article, is that there is yet again more fiat capital in the system. But now, the rate at which capital fabrication is increasing is itself increasing. In other words, larger sums are required just to keep the international circle-jerk in motion.
You've got to hand it to David Beckham. He certainly knows how to make a little go a long way. Beckham’s rise to global stardom is, in one sense, bordering on the unbelievable.
Even in his prime he couldn’t outpace opponents or bamboozle them with his trickery. His heading prowess was conspicuous only by its absence.

NEVER LET it be said that 'Inside Right' isn't willing to suffer for the cause, lay his body on the line and take a right good battering, all in the name of sport.
You might think it's only players that suffer the bumps, bruises, sprains and breaks but being a supporter can also be a dangerous pursuit, fraught with all sorts of unexpected dangers.
WHERE did that one come from? Sunderland pulled off one of their best victories in several years when they toppled unbeaten champions Chester-le-Street in a five-star performance at Ashbrooke.
Even though Joe Coyne gave the Wearsiders a good start with an opening 65, there was no hint that the home side were on their way to a win as the efficient Chester bowling machine whittled its way slowly through the home line-up.
It was only a matter of time until someone asked Jayson Werth about the beer special at Duffy's Irish Pub where you can buy a Papst Blue Ribbon, Miller Lite or Bud Light for the price of Werth's batting average. FOX Sports' Joe McDonnell has stepped up to the plate and posed the question to Werth. Werth's response?
Welcome to the dog days of summer in Nats Town. The Nationals start a nine-game homestand tonight; they’ll play three series against NL East foes, and they’ll need to come out 6-3 if they want any shot at making a run at the Wild Card. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening, but there’s a good solid chance at 5-4, if they play their cards right. Here’s the full preview of the homestand that brings us fish, the Braves, the first start of the season for one Washington pitcher, and a Jayson Werth Bobblehead doll.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are first in the National League Central Division standings, and it's not April?
How cool is that?
More like cute, actually, if you listen to much of the national sports media. The long-dormant Pirates, dregs of the NL for oh-so-many years now, are competitive? How adorable!
Naturally, name recognition hasn't caught up to the kitschy Pirates just yet. Outside of All-Star outfielder Andrew McCutchen, precious few of those precious Pirates spring to mind for most baseball fans as Pittsburgh entered Monday night in a three-way tie atop the NL Central standings.
Right-handed bat or reliever? This is the big question facing Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. with the July 31 trading deadline fast approaching.
Fans have been clamoring for a bat since Jayson Werth left the team to sign a mammoth deal in free agency. The bullpen has lost three closers to injuries and have relied on a 24-year-old rookie (Stutes) to setup and a 25-year-old (Bastardo) to close games.
There is no doubt what the Nationals need as baseball's trade deadline approaches July 31. Washington must find both a leadoff batter and a center fielder. The average on-base percentage of Danny Espinosa, Jayson Werth, Roger Bernadina, Rick Ankiel, Jerry Hairston and Ian Desmond when hitting first is .266. Their slugging percentage is .302. Their OPS is .568, which if it belonged to a single batter would make him one of the sport's worst offensive players. Can the Nats accomplish two things with one trade? Here are some possible options:
Look, I know this time of year can be frustrating. The Toronto Blue Jays currently sit twelve games back in the AL East, it’s not even August yet, and in many ways they’re already playing out the stretch, because for the 18th year in a row, the team isn’t going to be making the playoffs.

Yesterday, I created a list of some of the most controversial moments in wrestling history. None of that controversy, however, is possible without the people behind it. There are even stories from backstage that are just as controversial and downright wrong. There are a lot of disturbing stories from the world of professional wrestling.

Reports have emerged demonstrating U.S. funding the Taliban--the very enemy which our best and brightest have been fighting in Afghanistan since 2001. This should be no surprise to many. In May , Fox News reported similar activities of funding these Pashto insurgents through Pakistan. The article compared and contrasted the Afghan National Police and Afghan insurgent’s pay scales.

(Guardian Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A quick burst of 8 links for you to chew over, as picked by the Technology team Bing Becomes a Costly Distraction for Microsoft >> NYTimes.com "Microsoft needs to concentrate on a different kind of search: finding a buyer for Bing, its online search business. Bing is the industry's distant No. 2 after Google. It has become a distraction for the software giant -- one that costs shareholders dearly. The division that houses Bing lost $2.6 billion in the latest fiscal year. Facebook, or even Apple, might make a better home for Bing. A sale would be a boon for Microsoft's investors." Why Apple may be alone and vulnerable in mobile >> ZDNet "Apple's staggering Q3 reports might allow them to buy Dell twice and still have a boatload of cash in reserve, but they've got a real ecosystem and strategy problem." Apparently part of the problem is not having a search engine that loses torrents of money every quarter, and that it doesn't have LinkedIn baked into iOS5.
Is it selling information or the public commons? Who is minding the store?
Apple’s ( News - Alert )commercials are infectious. In no small measure they help drive sales of all things “i” and iOS related. In fact, Apple has filed to trademark its “There’s An App for That,” tagline. However, just because there is an app does not illuminate that app’s utility or even legality. This is something to think about given the billions of app downloads and exponentially growing number of apps flooding Apple andAndroid ( News - Alert )app stores. A case in point are the apps to help people find parking spaces in densely populated urban areas.

“We’ve won 12 championships,” the 41-year-old Wayne catcher said. “We’re tied with Tinicum A.C. for the most championships, and we’d like to get No. 13 this year.
HONOLULU (AP) - Forensic scientists are conducting tests on a skull unearthed at the bottom of Pearl Harbor to determine if it belonged to a Japanese pilot who died in the historic attack on Dec. 7, 1941.
An excavation crew dredging the harbor recently made the startling discovery of the skull, which archeologists believe is from one of the Japanese aviators in the surprise attack.
A single, careless scissor snip had compromised the center of the most powerful government in the world. Staffers accustomed to constant, twitchy BlackBerry attachment were stopped in their tracks. “It felt like a snow day,” one adviser told the Washington Post.
R e Curt Welborne letter of July 18, "Liberals deserve thanks, not scorn."
Once again a liberal cannot reach the meat of his argument before name calling and making insulting remarks. Once he has those off his chest, he wonders why not everyone thinks the president is a "great American." Could it be unemployment, a failed stimulus, the ignoring of the job crisis and the economy during his first 18 months in office, while he and the liberal Congress chased long discredited liberal dreams, or the attack on Boeing?
Two dozen sailors and a handful of officers have come to McClure Field on a Tuesday to play softball. Some have their shirts off on this steamy summer day as they toss the ball a few times to warm up before the first pitch.
McClure is a lot of field for such an informal game. It seats 3,500 and is the second-oldest brick baseball stadium in the country. Games have been played here for almost a century. Years ago, the Navy put up a series of markers to tell its history, but these days few stop to read them.
John Berger stood in the stiff wind on the Port Chicago dock Saturday morning as the staccato flap of an American flag punctuated the words he spoke to the crowd gathered at the water's edge.
"I felt the ground shake," he said. "I heard the loud roar. I still feel it."
Though nearly seven decades had passed, the 91-year-old chaplain and retired Navy man could not forget the devastation when 5,000 tons of explosives were accidentally detonated as they were loaded onto two World War II ships, killing 320 men, almost all African American, and injuring 400 others.

SITKA -- Dennis Baker knew exactly where he wanted to go when he left the M/V Oosterdam for the short boat ride to Sitka on Thursday.
In Alaska for the first time, along with his girlfriend Norma Jean Harstvedt, Baker walked over to Centennial Hall, where a World War II Navy uniform worn by his father is the centerpiece of a new exhibit at the Sitka Historical Museum.
Churches have played an important role in the shaping of the history of Baltimore County.
Religious faith was a prominent trait in early settlers. One denomination, the Methodists seemingly even more than others. In fact, the Perry Hall community of the late 1700’s was called the “Cradle of Methodism” in Baltimore County.
Excavators made a shocking discovery recently in the murky depths of Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor; a human skull . The remains are believed to belong to a Japanese pilot who perished during the Pearl Harbor attack.
The Pearl Harbor skull was salvaged during a night time search of the waters. Crew was unaware of the discovery at first and allowed the remains to dry with other retrieved items. However, once the skull was found among the items all work was abruptly stopped.
EL MONTE - Friends and family of active community volunteer and Pearl Harbor survivor Jesus "Joe" Soto bid him farewell last week.
Soto, of Alhambra, died July 12. He was 93.
"He was a warm, very gentle man, who had a passion and patriotism for this country," said Marian Last, community and senior services manager for the El Monte Senior Center. "He was a phenomenal gentleman. We'll never see that kind of breed again."
Captain America: The First Avenger is the kind of awkward failure that was hinted at already this year with Marvel Comics’ Thor and nearly spelled disaster with DC Comics’ Green Lantern . While not a terrible film, Captain America lacks the edge necessary to truly capture viewers’ imagination.
I'm not too sure if there's a Saint Peggy or not, but now that Peggy Soucy has left this Earth and gone on to heaven, there should be.
Many of you knew Peggy, who died this past Wednesday. She and her husband Lee (more on their unique relationship in a minute) moved to Plainview 65 years ago in 1946.
WATSONVILLE -- At 90 years old and nearly 70 years after she attended college, Watsonville resident Eiko Sakaguchi was awarded an honorary degree from Santa Rosa Junior College diploma.
She attended only one semester of college and her departure from school wasn't by choice.
Sakaguchi, a Japanese-American, has not attended the college since 1942, when her family was forced to move to an internment camp or to evacuate the Pacific Coast.
Charlie Black may have been one of the greatest basketball players to have played in Topeka, but he didn't do it long enough before leaving town to make the eligibility requirements for the Capital-Journal's Top 100 list.

Pearl Harbour find could belong to a Japanese pilot, researchers say
Honolulu: The skull found in Pearl Harbour believed to be from a Japanese pilot in the December 7, 1941, attack could belong to one of three airmen who were aboard a torpedo plane that was shot down where the surprising discovery was made.
Dayton, Ohio (WDTN) - Engines are revving for a second day at the Vectren Dayton Airshow.
This year's show at the Dayton International Airport will feature the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds pushing their F-16 Fighting Falcons to the limit in a display of speed, skill, power and precision.
Other attractions include a dramatic recreation of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, one of a kind helicopter aerobatic maneuvers, and a rare visit from one of NASA's most unusual looking transport planes.
Columbia -- After drawing criticism from open-government advocates last month, state transportation commissioners said Thursday they will consider adding a public comment period to each of their meeting agendas.
The Transportation Commission voted 5-2 to include public comment on Thursday's agenda, and several members said they are willing to discuss making citizen input a regular item at all meetings.

Gould, Ark.: After a citizens advocacy group forms in the financially troubled city, the City Council passes an unconstitutional ordinance forbidding any group, club or organization from forming without City Councils approval.
-- Look beyond President Obama 's national approval rating; there are warning signs in some of the key battleground states Obama must win if he wants a second term. In Ohio, Quinnipiac measures Obama's approval rating at just 46 percent, with 50 percent disapproving. In Iowa, according to a Mason-Dixon poll released this week, he trails former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney , 42 to 39 percent. Romney also leads Obama in Michigan, 46 to 42 percent, in an EPIC-MRA poll. Earlier this month, a Granite State poll in New Hampshire pegged his job approval at 46 percent, with 49 percent disapproving. Obama won all of these states in the 2008 presidential election with at least 52 percent of the vote.
Scott Brown must be shaking in his boots — the candidate du jour against him is a 62-year-old moonbat from Oklahoma who blew in to Massachusetts in 1995.
Her name is Elizabeth Warren, and she is no relation to the previous candidate du jour, Setti Warren. She’s a professor at Harvard Law School, and she’s being “urged” to run by the usual trust-funded suspects currently clipping coupons on Nantucket. I’m not saying she’s not a mainstream Democrat — in 2002, she donated $500 to Robert B. Reich, another carpetbagger who drifted into Harvard Square and then began lecturing the hoi polloi on their shortcomings.
Former Sen. John Edwards' 2008 presidential campaign should repay the U.S. Treasury more than $2 million, the Federal Election Commission said Thursday after an audit of the campaign.
Federal auditors said the campaign understated its cash on hand and overstated its expenses, including money spent to wind down the campaign. Auditors also found that the campaign failed to itemize more than $4 million in loan repayments.
When the Space Shuttle Atlantis and its four astronauts returned safely to Earth early Thursday morning, it was a great relief. There were tears when the shuttle landed safely, because it was the last flight of the U.S. space shuttle program. Now the door is open for private companies and other countries to conduct shuttle flights. ... Former South Carolina Sen. John Edwards may have to pay the U.S. Treasury $2.3 million from matching funds that he received for his 2008 presidential campaign. Edwards spoke here several years ago at the annual Manufacturer & Business Association dinner, along with former Sen. Fred Thompson, and was impressive. He's been embroiled in difficulty since then. ... Hopefully, General Electric will renew its foundation program beyond 2012. It expires in June of that year. The grant from the program, which was intended to improve math and science education in the district, has been well used by the Erie School District. ... You have to wonder what has gotten into Tiger Woods. Last week, he fired his longtime caddie Steve Williams, with whom he worked for 12 years. Together, they amassed 72 victories and 13 major championships. Normally, in cases like this, the player and caddy usually send out the same message: "It is time for a change." But Williams, taken by surprise, wondered aloud what is happening to Woods. In 2010, Woods also fired his longtime swing coach. Greg Norman noted that many of Woods' problems seemed to surface after the death of his father, who exercised a great deal of discipline on his son.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker and special teams ace Scott McKillop never had to sit out a year to rehab a sports injury — not in peewee football, not in little league, not in a decade-plus of wrestling.
The day started with a 6:40 a.m. flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas (well, it actually started with a loud buzzer ringing at 5:10), continued with a morning matchup that featured consensus No. 1 boys' basketball prospect Shabazz Muhammad versus UCLA commit Jordan Adams, took some intriguing turns during a lunch with Ben Howland at Burger King and concluded with a viewing of a game involving eighth-grader Stephen Zimmerman, who already has a scholarship offer from the Bruins.
Stephen Zimmerman is a tall, lanky eighth-grader with a scholarship offer from UCLA.
The significant Taylor King comparisons end there.
Zimmerman, a 6-foot-10, 203-pound freshman-to-be at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High, said he would wait a while before making his college commitment even though the Bruins and Nevada Las Vegas have offered scholarships.
The Pac-12 has a lot of expectations for this year starting with the addition of Utah and Colorado to the ranks, but there is more for each team to consider than just a new rival or two.
This is a list of the good, the bad and the ugly that each Pac-12 team will have to confront in the 2011 season.
A San Fernando Valley man has pleaded no contest to attempted murder for stabbing a Simi Valley man and a second victim during a melee outside the Rose Bowl before a USC-UCLA football game in December.
Anthony Cisneros, 23, of Winnetka, entered his pleas Thursday before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Janice Croft, who is assigned to the court's branch in Pasadena, where the Rose Bowl is located.
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- In April, Aziz Shittu was convinced Stanford was the place for him. He committed on the spot.
Two months later, with every major national power chasing the Sporting News Top 125 defensive tackle, there were some doubts and he withdrew his commitment. The Cardinal are still high on the list, but they haven't been a frontrunner for a long time, the consensus five-star prospect told Sporting News at the FBU-Top Gun Camp in Williamsburg, Va.

Only Arizona, UCLA and Washington welcome back both starting cornerbacks, but only Utah and Colorado lost both starters.
So most teams are at least half-way there at cornerback heading into fall camp.
How do things stack up? Read on.
Arizona : It's not just that the Wildcats welcome back four of the five names from their 2010 depth chart, including both starters. In fact, Robert Golden is moving back to safety. It's that Trevin Wade, Jonathan McKnight and Shaquille Richardson are an outstanding trio on team that is extremely well-coached -- Mike Stoops' specialty -- in the secondary. Of course, if the Wildcats struggle to rush the passer after the departure of D-ends Brooks Reed and Ricky Elmore, their CBs could end up looking ordinary.
While talking on his cell phone, our next Bear was driving toward Platteville, Wisconsin when he found himself in an awkward predicament. No, he didn't crash his Lamborghini into a telephone pole (he was actually driving an SUV). He had no cash at a toll-booth, barely hours after signing a 5-year contract worth potentially $22 million.
We've already looked at the numbers. Anticipation of college football begins with each conferences' media day. For the newly-knighted Pacific 12 Conference, the first media day is Tuesday, July 6. Among the hot topics? Expect much on the Oregon football scandal of Willie Lyles. Of course, we'll expect more on the additions of Utah and Colorado reshaping the conference into North and a South divisions. And how will the Wildcats fare?

HOOVER, Ala. -- When a high school blue-chip football recruit signs with a college, most of his reasons, besides getting a free education, are simple.
He wants to play on teams that can challenge, at the very least, for conference championships. He wants to play in bowl games, collecting the gifts and the memories.
Much like the late, great Rodney Dangerfield would lament over the lack of love he received by virtually everyone he encountered, one of the six college football conferences that currently enjoy automatic-BCS qualifying status has been guilty of harping on the same. Actually, it's the fans that follow the teams that call it home who are the ones that bemoan the fact year after year. Of course we're referring to the Big East, and truth be told, it really shouldn't shock anyone that the league known more for its basketball prowess than gridiron glory has a ways to go before being regarded with the same reverence others around the country have.
For many individuals, once they leave college, there is a feeling of wanting to leave behind some sort of legacy at the school they attended. We all can’t be valedictorian, be president of a fraternity or sorority, or kick the game winning field goal to win our college the Fiesta Bowl. However, that does not mean we are unable to leave behind some sort of mark on the schools we devotedly attended.
The Oklahoma Sooners will get a lot of national attention after ESPN announced on Thursday they will document the Sooners football team in a broadcast called “College Football Special: Oklahoma All-Access.”
This is the same series that showed last year on ESPN when the network followed the Alabama Crimson Tide.
For one second today, resist the urge to say what you really think of it, and give the NCAA its due.
The organization took a lot of heat in the last year, most of it warranted, but really took the high road when it approved a unique fundraiser for Southern Illinois University. The Salukis got the OK to take bids from the public to have their names printed on the backs of 80 SIU football jerseys in their game against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 12. All the proceeds will go toward cancer research and prevention efforts in the region.
