A San Fernando Valley man has pleaded no contest to attempted murder for stabbing a Simi Valley man and a second victim during a melee outside the Rose Bowl before a USC-UCLA football game in December.
Anthony Cisneros, 23, of Winnetka, entered his pleas Thursday before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Janice Croft, who is assigned to the court's branch in Pasadena, where the Rose Bowl is located.
As part of a plea bargain, Cisneros will be sentenced to 15 years and four months in state prison when he returns to court Aug. 29, Deputy District Attorney Brook White said. Had Cisneros been convicted at trial, he would have faced a potential life prison term. Cisneros remains in custody.
The stabbings occurred during a wild brawl in the Rose Bowl's parking lot involving dozens of rival USC and UCLA fans before the Dec. 4 game, police said.
White said Cisneros stabbed Vimal Patel, of Pasadena, 24, eight times and Joshua Dirling of Simi Valley, 28, once near his eye. Dirling testified at the preliminary hearing in the case that the tip of Cisneros's knife remains embedded in his eye socket, White said. Patel has lingering medical issues stemming from the stabbing.
Police said the melee broke out after a group of tailgaters tossed a football that accidentally struck a car belonging to another group. Patel belonged to the first group.
Cisneros's brothers, Arthur Cisneros, 26, and Akira Cisneros, 24, were previously convicted in the case.
Arthur Cisneros pleaded no contest to one count of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and was sentenced to one year in Los Angeles County Jail as a condition of being placed on three years' probation. Akira Cisneros pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge and was sentenced to 40 hours of community labor, also as a condition of being placed on three years' probation.
Dirling could not be reached for comment.
