Free agent cornerback Chris Carr is coming back to the Ravens, signing a four-year deal Saturday.
He confirmed the news on his Twitter feed, writing, "Well bmore. I'm backkkkkkkkkkkkk! Very excited to finish my career here."
Bringing back Carr, who was the Ravens’ top cornerback in 2010, became a priority when Josh Wilson, the team’s other starting cornerback down the stretch, signed with the Washington Redskins.
The Ravens also have Domonique Foxworth, Lardarius Webb and rookie Jimmy Smith at the position, but Foxworth is coming back from an ACL injury, Webb was inconsistent in 2010 and Smith is a rookie. Adding Carr gives them a smart, versatile player who can start if needed, fill the nickel-back role or serve as a backup.
He said earlier this month that he wanted to be assured of a big role wherever he signed, and while nothing is certain, he will be on the field a lot in Baltimore.
The Ravens are hoping Smith, their 2011 top draft pick, becomes a top-line, shutdown corner, which would leave one starting spot open. Carr now becomes the early favorite for the spot with Foxworth’s status still uncertain.
The New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars also reportedly were interested in Carr, 28, who started all 16 games in 2010 and finished fifth on the team in tackles.
