Vockah Redu brings booty Bounce to The Works

For those of you unfamiliar with the literal ass shaking of the New Orleans hip hop based Bounce movement, Thursday September 8th might be your best opportunity to get acquainted. This year, the annual Time Based Art festival is bringing none other than Vockah Redu to The Works , which is TBA’s nightly performance showcase.

Vockah Redu grew up rhyming and making beats in the Magnolia Housing Projects of New Orleans. He’s among the original, openly gay MC’s to get outright nasty on the Bounce backed mic. But Vockah is set apart from contemporaries like Big Freedia, Cheeky Blaak, Magnolia Shorty, and Katey Red (the Original “Sissy Bounce” MC) in that he prides himself on over-the-top costumes and a penchant for elaborately choreographed sets.

Audiences of every color and affiliation come to watch Vocka Redu and the Cru heat up Bounce’s traditional rapid fire beats with their wild, electrified, constantly morphing energy. The vocals, dancing, and performance aspects of Vockah Redu and the Cru are becoming more and more Afro-futuristic while maintaining a steady play of gender and sexuality. Jonathan Dee compared Vockah to “a latter-day George Clinton”in his New York Times Magazine article on gender-bending New Orleans rappers.

Show begins at 11 p.m. on Thursday, September 8th as part of TBA’s The Works at Washington High School (SE 14th and Stark). Expect to experience an X rated lyrical style, and more than your fair share of booty bouncing. Portland’s own resident Bounce maker,  DJ Beyondadoubt , plays after Vockah Redu at 11:55 p.m.
