Police and Community briefs, Sept. 5 | Ocala.com

More than $15,000 in air conditioning equipment was reported stolen on Saturday.

Approximately 30 air handlers being stored at 1880 SW Fourth Ave. were found missing by their owner. He said he had not been to the property since July 1, according to Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports.

The equipment was removed during renovations of other houses and was stored on the property. Part of a chain link fence was cut to remove the equipment, according to a report. Grass in the area where the items were stored had grown significantly, and the cut fence already showed signs of corrosion, leading investigators to believe the thefts occurred sometime earlier, reports state.

It is suspected that the items were targeted for the copper they contain inside. The theft of air conditioning equipment has increased as the price of copper had gone up.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 732-9111, Crime Line at 369-7001 or Crime Stoppers at 368-7867.
