LAUREL — The 10-year-old Laurel-Jones County Nationals won their district championship Thursday defeating Lawrence County 11-1 in five innings in Bay Springs.
Reid Goleman, John Mitchell, Matt Waldrup, Luke Leggett, and Juan Nelson all had singles. Cameron Jones had two singles during the game, while Chris Riley, Garrett McLaurin, and Nate Conliff had a single and a double apiece. Zack Walters lead the way at the plate with two singles and a double.
Starter John Mitchell pitched four and one third innings in the winning effort allowing two hits with the one run and five strikeouts. Reliever Reid Goleman pitched the final two thirds of an inning with one strikeout.
The Nationals finish the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record and will play in the South State Tournament in Hattiesburg that begins on July 22.
On Wednesday, Laurel-JC defeated the Seminary All Stars 8-1 and advance to the championship game.
Cameron Jones and Luke Legget had one single apiece while Chris Riley added a double and Jonah Webb had two singles during the game. John Mitchell added a single with two RBIs, Nate Conliff had one single, one home run, and one RBI, while Reid Goleman added two singles one home run, and two RBIs for the game. The big performance on the night came from Garrett McLaurin who led the way with one single, two homers, and 3 RBIs.
Starter Luke Leggett pitched three and one third innings in the winning effort allowing two hits, walking one with four strikeouts and one earned run. Reliever Reid Goleman pitched the final two and two thirds innings allowing two hits and striking out three.
