Truck driver helps rescue kidnapped toddler | rescue, toddler, driver - The Star Online : The Newspaper of Cleveland County

GASTONIA, N.C. - An unknown truck driver helped Highway Patrol troopers rescue a 2-year-old boy early Friday morning who had been violently kidnapped by his mentally ill mother in Georgia, according to warrants.

A truck driver heading across the state line into North Carolina on I-85 spotted the Georgia mother and alerted authorities at 12:36 a.m. Friday while in Cleveland County and troopers were able to stop the woman at 12:46 a.m. just before mile marker 13 in Gaston County, according to the Highway Patrol.

The truck driver recognized the car and license plate from an Amber Alert. The boy was taken into custody by Gaston County Department of Social Services and the mother went to Gaston County Jail.

The incident began around 6 p.m. Thursday in Coweta County, Ga., just south of Atlanta. The boy's mother, 26-year-old Laura Anne Marsh of Moreland, Ga., went to her mother's house in an effort to visit her son, Cameron Marsh, according to a state warrant issued in Georgia.

The grandmother, Denise Marsh, has legal custody of the child. A judge in Georgia signed an order on May 6 that Laura Marsh was not to have contact with her son.

"Knowing that Laura has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder, Denise allowed Laura to visit with Cameron so Laura would not become combative," the Georgia warrant states.

Mother and child visited for a brief period in the backyard of Denise Marsh's Hines Road home in the town of Moreland, Ga.

Things turned violent when Denise Marsh insisted that Cameron needed to come inside, according to the warrant. The grandmother and boy went inside the home and Denise Marsh locked the door.

"Shortly after she locked the door, Laura used a weapon to break the screen door and window on the side door and gained entrance into the residence," the warrant states. "Denise attempted to lock herself and Cameron into a bedroom, but Laura was able to force her way into the room before it was secured."

Laura Marsh then used a pipe to threaten Denise Marsh and demanded custody of Cameron.

"Denise then released Cameron and Laura grabbed him and threw him to the side," the warrant states. "Laura then struck Denise three times about her body with the pipe causing bruising to the left side of her abdomen in the presence of her son Cameron."

Laura Marsh then took her mother's purse containing a cell phone, credit cards and car keys. She then took her mother's 2006 Nissan Altima that was parked outside and left with Cameron, according to the warrant.

After the truck driver helped troopers identify the woman he continued on his route.

Marsh will be charged with federal crimes, police said, and she will be transported back to Georgia.
