Somers Point In Your Town, Edition of July 21, 2011 | Events

There will be a fundraiser to help with costs for locals who will represent the United States at the All Ireland Fleadh at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21 at Christ Episcopal Church. Emily Safko, Along with Haley and Dylan Richardson placed at the Mid Atlantic Fleadh music festival qualifying them to represent the United States at the All Ireland Fleadh to be held in Cavan, Ireland. Desserts are welcome. Soft drinks and water will be available. Irish musicians are welcome to bring along their instruments and join the band. Edgardo Cintron Band with Dane Anthony will perform Latin sounds with a tribute to Santana takes the stage 7 to 9:15 p.m. Friday, July 22 at William J. Morrow Memorial Beach, New Jersey and Bay avenues, Somers Point. Dr. Bobby Fingers with “Ernie T” Trionfo will play sing-a-long popular music July 29 and Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone with Special Guest Susan Cowsill will perform New Orleans rhythm and blues and Louisiana rock 'n’ roll. The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 352 will hold its annual Summer Barbecue 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 31 at the post at the corner of First Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Dr. Bobby Fingers band with special guest Ernie T. Trionfo will provide the entertainment. Tickets are $20 and $8 for children 12 years old and younger. Proceeds will be used for the purchase and erection of a new flag pole at the post and the balance will be donated to American Legion programs. The Open Door, a used clothing store located in the United Methodist Church of Somers Point at the corner of Bethel Road and Doran Avenue, will hold a $1.00 sale on all clothing on Aug. 4-6. AMVETS Post 911 in Somers Point is requesting new and used DVDs to send to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families state-side. Donations of new or good condition DVDs will be accepted at the following locations in Somers Point: Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro, 908 Shore Road; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2189, 500 Bethel Road; and Chester's Pastry Pantry Bakery, 506 New Road. Donations will also be accepted at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8098, 3029 Spruce Ave., Egg Harbor Township. Cash donations will be accepted to pay for mailing DVDs to the troops. Donations of clean clothing in good condition are needed by the United Methodist Church of Somers Point, located at Bethel Road and Doran Avenue. The church will be opening an outlet for the community to secure recycled clothing at very reasonable prices. Clothing may be dropped off at the church mornings during the week. Call (609) 927-2075

The Society of Grub Street Rapscallions, a men’s literary and eating society dedicated to 18th and 19th century literature that has been in existence for almost 25 years, has limited openings available. Free blood pressure screenings will be offered 11 a.m.-1 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month at the Shore Memorial Hospital Thrift Shop in the Somers Point Shopping Center on Route 9, and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. every Friday at the Shore Memorial Hospital Prenatal Services building on the corner of New York Avenue and Shore Road across from the main hospital.
