SIOUX FALLS, SD The St. Paul Saints failed to sweep a series for the second time in four days as they dropped the finale of a three game series to the Sioux Falls Pheasants 14-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium.
With the Saints trailing 1-0 in the fifth the Pheasants extended their lead to 5-0. They loaded the bases on a walk to Trevor Lawhorn, a double by Reggie Abercrombie and a walk to Mark Shorey. Brandon Sing, the leagues leading home run hitter, cleared the bases with a double to left, making it 4-0. Three batters later Kevin Carby doubled home Sing to make it 5-0.
The Saints used their bat to cut the deficit to 5-2 in the sixth. Justin Snyder led off with a double and with one out Ole Sheldon crushed a two-run homer to left, his seventh of the season.
The Pheasants, however, struck again in the bottom of the inning with a three spot. Lawhorn led off with a walk and with one out Shorey singled him to second. Sing ripped another RBI double to center scoring Lawhorn and giving the Pheasants a 6-2 lead. After Gus Milner was hit by a pitch Francisco Leandro plated two with a single to left to make it 8-2.
The Saints, who have become accustomed to coming from behind during the roadtrip, looked like they were going to do it again. In the seventh Jonathan Van Every doubled with two outs and Steve Mays followed with an RBI double to make it 8-3. After back-to-back walks to Snyder and Donald Blunt loaded the bases Sheldon unloaded them with a double to right-center to make it 8-6. Sheldon finished the game 3-4 with a double, homer, five RBI and a run scored. Unfortunately, the Saints would get no closer.
The Pheasants put the game out of reach in the ninth with a sacrifice fly from Carby, an RBI single from Henry Contreras and a grand slam from Lawhorn.
The Saints have Thursday off and return to action Friday night in game one of a three game series against the Sioux City Explorers at Midway Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Edwin Walker (3-3, 4.12) to the mound.
