NY town ready to officiate same sex marriages on historic first day

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — A suburban New York City town is ready for Sunday's historic day when same sex couples can marry in the state for the first time.

The Journal News reports that Greenburgh town officials will have three judges, the town supervisor, the town attorney and six new marriage officers on hand to approve and perform ceremonies at town hall.

New York City on Tuesday announced a lottery for couples seeking to tie the knot on Sunday. Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner invited those not selected for the city's 764 available spots to head north to Greenburgh.

Couples planning to come to the Westchester County town are asked to let officials know in advance to ensure the event goes smoothly.

Feiner says most of the staff on Sunday is volunteering their time.
