This past spring several Geneseo alumni represented Geneseo in athletics at their respective colleges.
At Monmouth College, Shane Reschke completed his junior year with the men’s track and field team.
Reschke earned three second-place finishes at the Washington University Invite in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.41 seconds, the 4x400-m relay in 3:18.51; and in the 400-m dash in 50.14.
At the Lee Calhoun Invite, Reschke’s 4x200-m relay captured first-place honors, taking the tape in 1:28.80, while the 4x400-m relay finished fourth in 3:21.44 and fifth in the 4x100-m relay in 42.50. Reschke also placed 12th in the 200-m dash at 23.03.
At the Augustana Meet of Champions, Reschke took fifth in 50.77. He earned a first-place finish in the 400-m dash at the Central Open in 50.69, along with third in the 4x400-m relay in 3:26.22 and fourth in the 200-m dash in 22.83.
In the conference meet, Reschke finished fifth in the 400-m dash with a time of 50.51, while at the NCAA track meet the 4x100-m relay finished in 41.86 in the prelims.
Megan Wyffels is a junior member of the Western Illinois University women’s track and field team in the pole vault.
Wyffels placed fourth at Knox College as she cleared 2.62m and then took fourth at SIU Edwardsville at 2.75m. She also came in sixth at the Monmouth Midweek Invite as she cleared 9-1.
Curt Jensen found success at Illinois State University as a sophomore member of the men’s track and field team in the throws events.
Jensen captured the conference championship in the shot put at the MVC Conference Championships with a throw of 57-2 3/4. He also took 16th in the discus at 137-08.
At the Big Blue Classic, Jensen finished first in the shot put with a throw of 56-1 3/4, followed by sixth in the hammer throw at 169-10 and 10th in the discus with a mark of 146-3.
He also placed first in the shot put at the Lee Calhoun Invite at 56 1/2 and took 11th in the hammer throw at 160-8. At the Mt. Sac Relays, he placed 10th in the shot put at 56-5 1/4 and 43rd in the shot put at the Beach Invite with a mark of 42-10 1/4.
At the Lenny Lyles Invite, Jensen finished second in the shot put at 16.29m, seventh in the discus at 42.33m and eighth in the hammer throw at 49.45m.
Jensen added a seventh-place finish at the Drake Relays in the shot put at 55-8 1/2. He also took third at the Billy Hayes Invite in the shot put at 55-11 1/4 and 17th in the discus at 144-07.
Dan Chenoweth completed his senior year of running for the Harvard University men’s track and field team this spring.
He captured two first-place finishes in the 5,000-m run, one at the Colonial Relays in 13:57.61 and the other at Yale in 14:20.88. Also at Yale, he finished fourth in the 1,500-m run in 3:57.26.
Stephanie Kennett, a sophomore member of the Concordia University women’s track and field team, competed in four meets this season.
The Lady Leaf softball program was represented by four former players at the collegiate level this season.
Maggie Bergeson in her first year of playing for Black Hawk College saw action in 39 games.
She pitched 88 innings and allowed 66 runs, 97 hits and 33 walks. She had 73 strikeouts and finished with a 10-3 record.
At the plate, Bergeson had 148 at bats with 49 hits, which included 10 doubles, three triples, one home run and 20 RBIs. She also scored 51 runs with an on base percentage of .380.
Black Hawk College finished the year at 24-17 overall.
Annie Lenz saw action in 21 games this season during her sophomore year with the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team and received two starts.
She had 24 at bats with five hits, two RBIs and had an on base percentage of .269.
Illinois Wesleyan University ended its season with an overall record of 21-15 and a conference mark of 6-8.
Robin Schaefer played 34 games and started in 32 in her freshman year with the Upper Iowa University softball team.
She had 97 at bats where she scored 15 runs, 23 hits with four doubles and three RBIs. Her on base percentage was .333.
Upper Iowa University ended their year at 6-41 overall and 2-22 in the conference.
Alli Rivera, a junior member of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay softball team, played in 46 games this season with 45 starts.
She had 139 at bats this year with 45 hits, five doubles, seven home runs, 33 RBIs and 16 runs scored.
UW-Green Bay finished the year with a 24-22 overall record and a 10-13 conference mark.
Joey Bergles is Geneseo’s lone baseball alumni at the college level. Bergles is a senior member of the Viterbo University baseball team, but took a medical redshirt during the 2011 season.
Kelsey Lieving, a sophomore, competed in three tournaments during the spring season for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s golf team.
Lieving placed 65th in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invite with a final score of 179. She shot a 90 in the first round and an 89 in the second.
At the Clarke Spring Invite, she took second with a 167. Lieving shot an 84 in the first round and an 83 in the second. UWP placed first as a team in the tournament.
Lieving finished 12th at the Augie Invite with a 95 as she shot a 48 in the first round and 47 in the second round. The Pioneers took third overall in the invite.
Ted Keopple competed in four tournaments for the Augustana College men’s golf team during the spring season.
He placed 79th at the Illinois Wesleyan Invite with a 172 as he shot 76s in both rounds. At the Augie Invite, Keopple came in 60th with a 164 with an 80 in the first round and 84 in the second.
Keopple finished 57th with a 122 at the Scot-Fire Invite as he shot a 43 in the first round and 79 on the second, while at the CCIW Championships, Keopple shot 87s both rounds for a 174.
Max Haverland, a freshman member of the Black Hawk College golf team, had a season low of 78 with 658 strokes. He played in eight 18 hole rounds and had an average round score of 82.250.
During the spring tennis season at Augustana College, sophomore Meghan Wethington won seven of the eight matches she competed in.
Against Cornell, she defeated Erin Seely in No. 6 singles, 6-0 and 6-3, while in No. 6 singles versus Simpson she beat Whitney Thompson, 6-0 and 6-2.
In No. 3 singles against Loras, Wethington defeated Carly Villano, 6-2 and 6-1, while at No. 4 singles versus Dubuque she beat Kristina McWethy, 6-2 and 6-2.
In doubles play, Wethington and Krista Panko won 8-3 at No. 2 against Monmouth. Wethington and Sheri Hendricks defeated their Loras opponents at No. 2 doubles, 8-0, while Wethington and Caitee Margenthaler won 9-8 in the No. 2 spot against Dubuque.
Wethington’s only loss came in No. 3 doubles with Brittany Reece to Wartburg, 5-8.
Joining the collegiate athletics ranks next season will be Alex Anderson, Augustan College football; Jacob Arnold, Scott Community College soccer; West Cathcart, Lincoln College wrestling; Leo DeBisschop, Ashford University soccer; Amanda Egan, Bellarmine University track and field; Eli Flynn, Ashford University soccer; Jared Kuban, Black Hawk College men’s basketball; Ryan Patterson, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football; Cole Reiling, University of Dubuque football; Anthony Roome, Augustana College football; Branden Smith, St. Ambrose University cross country/track and field; Andrew Walters, Monmouth College football; and Allison Wiese, Truman State University women’s basketball.
