Would Mel Gibson be a great choice to guest star on Saturday Night Live right now? What television shows has Jack Nicholson done? Who has taken the most parts that were previously turned down? All this and more covered this week in Ask 411 Movies!

We finish our January YouTube theme of fun with Muppets with one of the best. If anything is better than a RickRoll it's a Muppet theme RickRoll starring Beeker. I guess it's not much of a RickRoll if I announce you're getting RickRolled, but you have to admit Beeker looks a lot like Rick Astley.

As many followers of the USC football program have become accustomed to, the 2011 recruiting class is loaded with four- and five-star recruits.

Though there can still be some movement on the recruiting front between now and National Signing Day on Feb. 2, I’ve asked Lisa Horne of FOXSports.com and Ryan Abraham of USCFootball.com to help me break down this group of recruits.

Motley Crue singer avoids media for Vegas DUI plea

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Motley Crue singer Vince Neil avoided the media and quietly pleaded guilty Wednesday to driving drunk last summer near the Las Vegas Strip in a case that drew denials that he received preferential treatment.

A temporary judge who took the plea before reporters arrived sentenced Neil to 15 days in the Clark County jail and 15 days on house arrest under terms of an agreed–upon plea deal that spared him a trial on a misdemeanor driving under the influence charge. Neil could have faced up to six months in jail if convicted.

Why is Cameron so deferential to Murdoch? | Alexander Chancellor | Comment is free | The Guardian

Rupert Murdoch seems to have David Cameron in his grasp. Photograph: Scott J Ferrell/Congressional Quarterly/Getty Images

It must have taken quite something to get Rupert Murdoch to cancel his visit to Davos for a glamorous economic summit and stay instead in grey and chilly London. There are, of course, a couple of vexatious problems within his British media empire, but he has not been needed here in person to sort them out. On the phone hacking allegations at the News of the World, Murdoch made clear a while ago that he condemns the practice; and News International, presumably on his instructions, now seems to be co-operating fully with the police in their new investigation. About sexism at Sky television he does not even seem to care, judging, at least, from the Guardian's leaked account of comments he made on Wednesday while attending an editorial conference at the Times. He reportedly said, in reference to sports commentator Andy Gray's deprecation of women as football officials, that "this country has lost its sense of humour" and that what Gray had said was "not worse than what women say about other women".

China's progress is to be lauded, not feared - Telegraph

I’m sorry, but I refuse to be intimidated by a Chinese ballet class, which for all the world looked to me much like the one my daughter used to go to in London. If Shanghai produces the next Anna Pavlova, or even several of them, then that’s cause for celebration, not humiliation.

And, of course, it is quite likely to do so, for at 1.4 billion souls, there’s a big talent pool to draw from. China’s size alone dictates that in a globalised world economy, where the traditional Western advantages of superior technology, know-how and education have all but broken down, it will eventually account for a high proportion not just of top ballerinas, but scientists, brain surgeons, research breakthroughs, patents, and everything else, including crooks and deadbeats.

Town mouse follows the development of central London | Blog | Houses for sale, properties for sale - Country Life

The other day, I was in North Wales. Conwy is a delightful town, almost entirely contained within its medieval walls. Nothing much has changed since the Elizabethan town house of Plas Mawr was built. It's rather different from Pimlico. Back home, I went to a residents' association meeting, and found our borders are under threat of change on every side.

What should be the Detroit Pistons' biggest offseason priority: A traditional point guard or a back-to-the basket post player?

By Justin Rogers | MLive.com

AP File Photos The Pistons would need to get lucky in the draft lottery to have a shot at center Enes Kanter (left) or Duke point guard Kyrie Irving.

The Detroit Pistons are a little more than halfway through the season, but let's face it, this team is barely contending for a playoff spot, and is extremely unlikely to advance to the second round. That's why it's as good a time as ever to start thinking about the offseason.

Australian Company Joins Race to Make 'Green' Cement From CO2

Not only that, but the resulting byproducts may have uses in construction or farming.

Calix, based in Sydney, says its Endex Reactor can scrub 90 percent of the carbon dioxide from the fuel gas of a power plant -- burning either natural gas or gasified coal -- by using specially treated lime.

Calix is one of three companies rushing to perfect a clean coal technology that can also be used to make construction materials, such as cement, that can permanently store CO2 emissions from power plants. Two potential competitors include Calera, a California company that has received interest from Australia and China, and Novacem, a company based in the United Kingdom.

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Kansas St. Wildcats - NCAA Basketball Free Pick

If buying low and selling high is what this is all about, then people should be flocking to the Kansas State Wildcats right now, and away from the Kansas Jayhawks.

The Kansas St. Wildcats maybe, just maybe, have finally hit their stride after a very poor start to the college basketball season. The Kansas Jayhawks have lost only the one game this year to Texas, but they’re 1-4 ATS in Big 12 action heading into Saturday’s Sunflower Showdown with their rivals from K-State.

No 'Melo, No Problem For Streaking Nets - WSJ.com

After selecting him with the third overall pick in last June's draft, the Nets have finally cut the tags off of Derrick Favors.

Owner Mikhail Prokhorov's directive to "walk away" from a proposed trade for Denver's Carmelo Anthony means that Favors, along with an unparalleled stash of assets, will remain in general manager Billy King's care. The Jan. 19 announcement may have cost an offensively deficient team the chance to land an elite scorer, but it leaves the Nets with a menu of options over the next few seasons.

POY: The case for the best of the rest - College Basketball Nation Blog - ESPN

A tip of the cap is due to the following worthy player of the year candidates, all of whom have played very well but not quite well enough to crack the Fredette-Walker-Sullinger chokehold on the top three spots.

Jordan Hamilton, Texas: As the old saying goes, you know the best thing about freshman? They become Jordan Hamiltons. The 6-foot-7 Texas sophomore has taken the biggest frosh-to-soph leap in the nation in 2010-11, transforming from his inexperienced, turnover-prone rookie self into a downright lethal scorer (19.2 ppg) this season. Hamilton hasn’t gotten the national love he deserves just yet, but if the Longhorns keep winning like this -- a rare road win at Kansas being their latest result -- the gifted youngster is bound to start winning over hearts and minds. Who would have seen that coming?

NBA Draft 2011: Jimmer Fredette And The Top 10 Underrated Prospects

Double Dribbles: Who's No. 1?

Most NBA scouts and general managers will tell you itÂ’s way too early to gauge who will be the top pick in the 2011 draft. And they are right.

So letÂ’s pretend the college basketball season ended today. LetÂ’s pretend the draft is next week. And letÂ’s pretend scouts and GMs must go on what they have seen so far.

Barnes coming up in the clutch for Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL — There’s little doubt that North Carolina freshman Harrison Barnes has plenty of the tools to achieve basketball stardom. He’s got the frame, the hunger and the trophy case that speak to his lofty potential.

He’s even got a cool nickname: The Black Falcon.

The moniker was given to him during a high school all-star game. Fellow participant Jared Sullinger, now at Ohio State, was deemed “Big Smooth” while Duke freshman Kyrie Irving was given the name “Time” because, he said, no one could stop him.

Jimmermania highlights season's top performances

Jimmer! Kemba! Unique names, big games.

BYU's Jimmer Fredette and Connecticut's Kemba Walker have stormed through the season with jaw-dropping performances that have lifted their teams into the Top 10 and has them both in contention for player of the year honors. The only thing harder than guarding one of the two is figuring out which of their games rocked college basketball more than the others.

San Diego Entertainment | 2011 Oscar Nominations: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Oscar nominations have come out. A lot of it was predictable, and as always, there were a few surprises.

The King’s Speech got 12 nominations. It’s a good movie, not great.

True Grit got the next highest amount of nominations with 10. I thought the movie was disappointing. I liked it, but not as much as the last few westerns (3:10 to Yuma, Appaloosa, and the king of contemporary westerns,Unforgiven).

Jason Steals the Day

Jason Kidd's vision on the court is second to none in the NBA.

His peers rave about it and he regularly leaves them shaking their heads.

Generally J-Kidd uses that vision most on the offensive end, where he is the NBA's second all-time assist man. He did plenty of that again Tuesday night, dishing out seven dimes to zero turnovers as the Mavs defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 112-105.

Opinion: Google bots are deleting genuine blogs

Google must consider the question of whether the use of privacy and cyber security safeguards like Tor software is in itself sufficient grounds to remove a blog from Google’s database. Does the mere use of Tor violates the terms and conditions of Google

For those who aren't familiar with Tor, it's free software that "helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis," as the sitedefines. Google has supported the Tor projectand helped bloggers get their voice heard in areas where censorship is common place. But with the growth of the blogosphere, there are also many fake blogs, spam blogs or malicious blogs that have cropped up. Google has been struggling to deal with offensive blogs that are spoiling the otherwise genuine and wonderful blogosphere. Since the numbers of offending blogs are numerous, it is not possible to manually do this exercise.Google has to essentially use automated bots to do this cleansing job for it. However, Google bots need an urgent tweaking, as they are generating more and more false positives and many genuine blogs have been blocked or removed for being flagged as spam blogs. Not all these removed blogs are spam blogs, however, and many are genuine blogs with original content and no objectionable content. While I would not like to comment upon the spam detection and its removal procedure, I would like to discuss a very serious and civil liberty issue here. The matter pertains to protecting privacy of users of Google that it is not only morally required to protect, but also required under the provisions of various national and international laws and norms. The crucial question is whether Google isagainst use of Privacy safeguardslike Tor software? It seems Google consider the Tor traffic as malicious activities and removes any blog that uses the same from its database. The complete details of the same are available at itsHelp Forum. At the same time, Google also blocked access to the Google account itself in this case so no requests for review can be made from it. In fact, there is no way a person can log-in to this account. While browsers like Chrome, Firefox and IE are working in the direction of ensuring more privacy to users, Google bots seem to be working in the opposite direction. The Federal Trade Commission's has recently called for a simple mechanism empowering consumers to universally stop advertising networks from tailing them around the Web.If a person uses Tor, these advertisers cannot bother them with privacy-violating advertisements based on personal profiling. Tor automatically filters these advertisements and many cyber security threats. In my opinion, Google has not taken privacy issues very seriously. This has, to a larger extent, eroded its motto known as "Don't be evil." Of course Google has a right to take violations like spam very seriously, but it needs to reformulate its policies and practices regarding empowering its users with more privacy.

Teams called Micah Owings this off-season to see if he wanted to compete for a job as a starting pitcher. Other clubs viewed him as a relief candidate and a potential bat off the bench.

There was even one team, he said, that asked if he would consider converting full-time to being a position player.

TelecomTV | News | Demands grow for investigation into Google's relationships with US federal agencies

Headquartered in California, Consumer Watchdog is not a fan of Google and has spent a lot of time, effort and money monitoring the Cookie Monster's activities and what it refers to as the company's "cozy" relationship with successive US administrations.

In recent months, the organisation has been focusing on Google's so-called 'privacy practices' and frequently hauls the company over the coals for the hypocritical use of its much-vaunted mission statement and corporate mantra, "don't be evil".

State of the Twins Address | StarTribune.com

Here we sit, January 25, 2011. It doesn't seem so long ago that the Twins lost in three games to the Yankees. The memory is engrained in our minds. But at the same time, it seems like so long ago that we have watched a live Twins game. October! That means we have gone through November and December, and most of January without any baseball games to watch. If you're like me, you're ready. I'm ready! There are several Twins contingents around the Upper Midwest on the Winter Caravan. Twins Fest is this weekend in Blaine. And most important, we are just three weeks away from Pitchers and Catchers reporting.

MLB Predictions: Chris Carpenter to the Yankees and 50 Bold Predictions for 2011

With football season coming to a close, many sports fans now turn their attention to the sunny beacon of hope that is spring training.

Even at this early stage of the season, it is always fun to pick who will win the major awards and which teams will be playing in October, but the following goes one further, not only picking those things, but also making some more player-specific predictions for all 30 teams.

2011 Fantasy Baseball: First Basemen Rankings

Bust a move. A Catcher makes the Top 25?

Spring training is just around the corner, and in all likelihood we’ll see numerous changes throughout both divisions over the next several weeks, heading up to opening day for 2011. Still, it’s never too early to start planning to triturate your competition this fantasy season.

White Sox Preview: Part Two -- Who's on Third?

Third base is the biggest question mark in the White Sox lineup this season. The two main contenders for the job are the young hopeful Brent Morel, who came up at the end of last season with a competent glove and a potentially potent bat, and the lithe, ageless Methuselah, future Hall of Famer Omar Vizquel. And of course, Mark Teahen is still around and the Sox have to pay him $4.75 million this year , so they might as well try and find something for him to do.

Uncle Phil is ... The Shredder from TMNT?

Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bell Air is actually the Shredder from TMNT

Two of my favorite shows from childhood now have a newfound link. Our favorite 90s uncle, as recently discovered by this writer, also happens to play the arch enemy role on one of the greatest cartoons of all time. James Avery, better known as Uncle Phil from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air,  also starred as the villainous Shredder in the classic kids cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Mind boggling, I know. TMNT  ran from 1987 to 1994, while  Fresh Prince aired from 1990 to 1996. So for four solid years, Avery was yelling at his son Carlton and chasing Will equally as much as he was yelling at his partner in crime Krang and chasing those miserable turtles.

Gulf Times – Qatar’s top-selling English daily newspaper - Qatar

At a meeting this week of the Tuesday Ladies Group, Australian clinical/child psychologist Kimberley Sheedy spoke of the recent visit to Ethiopia of a group of women from Doha to see the work being done by the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital. The hospital was founded in 1794 by an Australian obstetrician-gynaecologist, Dr Catherine Hamlin, and her husband. In Ethiopia, Sheedy said, many girls are married as young as 12 years of age, and giving birth while still very young can result in severe internal injuries, known as fistulas, often leading to them being rejected by their families and forced to live in isolation. The hospital provides free surgery to correct this condition to over 2000 women annually, and cares for long-term patients who are unable to return home. The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital is now recognised world-wide for its pioneering work and has developed programmes for fistula treatment world-wide. There are plans to build five smaller fistula hospitals throughout Ethiopia, each of which will treat around 400 patients a year.  The visitors from Doha also toured the Yezalalem Minch Orphanage in Addis Ababa which provides for children whose parents have died of Aids, and offers support to families who have taken in orphaned children.Four of the women who visited Ethiopia also gave presentations and showed photographs and a video. All of this valuable and important aid, they emphasised, is largely dependent on charitable donations. Many members of the Tuesday Ladies Group have donated in the past and some are supporting individual orphans at the orphanage. Sheedy visits Ethiopia frequently to meet with patients and former patients from the hospital she has known for many years. Her next visit to Ethiopia with a group of women from Doha will be in May this year.An exhibition of photographs taken in Ethiopia by Kimberley Sheedy will open today at the Hyatt Hotel and will run until 4 February. All proceeds from the sale of the photographs will go to the people who appear in them.  Donations to either the hospital or orphanage can be made via the websites www.fistulafoundation.org and www.yezalalemminch.org

DeMorning DeBonis: Jan. 24, 2011

TODAY IS JAN. 24, 2011 -- DAY 23 OF THE GRAY ADMINISTRATION

Freeman Klopott analyzed the at-large D.C. Council race in the Sunday Examiner, and he makes the bold claim that Mayor Vince Gray 's endorsement of Sekou Biddle "has effectively narrowed the field to two main candidates," the other being Republican Patrick Mara . And the key issue of the race, he writes, is "who can best claim the Michelle Rhee title of school reformer." The piece generated a good amount of Twitter fury for a weekend, with @fklopott , @jasoncherkis , @DaveStroup , @ChuckThies and others debating the fairness of narrowing the field from well over a dozen to two with weeks to go before the ballot is even set. And, sure, Klopott may overstate the value of Gray's "political machine that has gathered little dust" since last fall's elections (won't be that easy to motivate anti- Adrian Fenty voters to show up en masse for a former Fenty supporter). But it's true that is Biddle is basing his pitch on ed-reform bona fides, and Mara is already looking to sharply undercut them: "By aligning himself with people who are not from the Rhee camp, I don't see how Biddle can still be independent," Mara tells Klopott. "There's no way he can claim the Rhee mantle anymore." It maybe too early to count out Vincent Orange , Bryan Weaver , Jacque Patterson and others, but the Biddle/Mara education clash is where the early sparks are flying.

Auburn swims past Florida - The Independent Florida Alligator: Swimming

Despite notching a season-high 14 NCAA qualifying times and racing one of their fastest meets of the year, the Gators couldn’t spoil Auburn’s Senior Day celebration Friday afternoon.

Florida trailed in both men’s and women’s events for most of the meet, losing by a combined 64 points. However, UF still received the same, solid output from their top two swimmers on each team.

Discussions of dates encouraged for 2022 - Canada Olympics | Examiner.com

According to the Associated Press, the International Olympic Committee is open to discussions with FIFA to avoid a major date conflict for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games and the 2022 World Cup of Soccer.

Why? Well, that is because there is the chance that the 2022 World Cup of Soccer will be moved from the summer to the winter in Qatar so the elite football players in the world won't have to play in extreme heat.

Uzbekistan making soccer world 'take notice'

DOHA — Uzbekistan are treading new ground at the Asian Cup and coach Vadim Abramov says their run to the semi-finals has proven to the world they can never be taken lightly.

The Central Asians are ranked a lowly 108 by FIFA, below minnows such as Haiti, Grenada and Antigua and Barbuda, but they have been impressive in Doha, beating hosts Qatar and then Kuwait before drawing with China.

Qatar squandered two opportunities

Abu Dhabi: Hosts Qatar, failed to cope with two advantages in their match against Japan in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup as they bid goodbye to the tournament.

The first advantage was they led the match twice, 1-0 and then 2-1 and in the second instance, they played against a reduced Japanese team but conceded two goals that earned the Blue Samurais a seat in the semi-final round.

Asia settles on Final Four

Usually, you wouldn't read too much into a game that is won by a team ranked 29th in the world against the one in 105th - even if it was at the home of the underdogs - but Japan's 3-2 triumph over hosts Qatar in the quarter-final of the 2011 Asian Cup was no run-of-the-mill clash. The game was not only a deserved victory for Japan in a hugely entertaining match but it marked the time when Samurai Blue showed that they have the mentality as well as the ability to justify their billing as favourites to win the title for a record fourth time.

Iran

An extra-time goal from substitute Yoon Bit-garam sent South Korea through to the semi-finals of the Asian Cup at the expense of Iran at Qatar Sports Club Stadium.

The teams were going head to head at the quarter-final stage of the continental tournament for the fifth successive edition and once again it was a typically closely-fought affair.

Hightower: A banker who gets it - Dedham, Massachusetts - The Dedham Transcript

Populist banker. Now those are two words you rarely see linked together.

But Thomas Hoenig, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, truly is a rarity. Firmly rooted in small-town Iowa and Kansas, he has never aspired to be part of the Wall Street-Washington power elite, and he doesn't hesitate to challenge their financial orthodoxy and obsequious kowtowing to the preening barons of big banking.

Texas passes Florida for second most reverse mortgages in U.S.

The amount of reverse mortgages originated in Texas is growing, passing Florida for the second most nationwide but still behind California, where 13% of these loans are located.

A reverse or Home Equity Conversion Mortgage allows the borrower, who must be at least 62 years old, to convert a portion of the equity in the home for cash. No repayment is required until the borrower no longer uses the home as a principal residence or does not meet the obligations of the loan.

Clean Energy Acquisitions May Come From Strategic Backers, Bankers Say

Large companies that have already made small, strategic investments in renewable energy startups may soon start buying them outright, according to investment bankers.

Many startups are moving into volume production or are close to doing so, and companies that provided early backing may now see the commercial potential of these emerging technologies, said several financial analysts who spoke during a panel discussion at the Clean-Tech Investor Summit in Palm Springs , California .

Bank of America looks for deeper cuts

No specific layoffs are announced, but Moynihan says units likely to downsize include consumer banking.

Bank of America plans more belt-tightening in 2011, likely meaning more job cuts ahead at the nation's biggest bank and one of Charlotte's biggest employers.

Chief executive Brian Moynihan told analysts on Friday that the bank will be more aggressive in cutting costs as the year goes on, although he said the bank is still adding jobs in growth areas and keeping thousands of extra workers to deal with loan modifications and foreclosures.

Lisa Gilbert: Stop the Big Bank Bonus Deja Vu

As we head into this year's Wall Street bonus season, there is an eerie sense of déjà vu. Ordinary Americans continue to suffer from foreclosures, unemployment, and cuts in public services, as the largest banks take in the nation's wealth and prepare to use it to award massive bonuses to the bankers that crashed our financial system. By continuing to reward risky behavior, the Wall Street bonus culture fosters a system full of perverse incentives and inflated executive compensation which puts the economy at risk and endangers Main Street.

The 10 best 80's cartoons went on to become iconic parts of American pop culture. Cartoons become a part of the viewer's life, and they get carried from generation to generation. Thanks to DVD, Blu-Ray and movie adaptations, the best 80's cartoons will be around for a very long time. "The Transformers" (1984-1987). The characters in "The Transformers" is what makes this one of the best 80's cartoons ever made. People remember Optimus Prime and Megatron much more than they will ever remember any of the plot elements from the cartoon shows. That is a testament to the strength of the character development that the writers created. "Voltron" (1984-1985). There were several spin-offs from the original "Voltron" (1984-1985) show, but nothing beats the original. Human pilots bringing space ships together to create a large robot named Voltron and then heading off to fight villains is what made this one of the best 80's cartoons. "Smurfs" (1981-1990). Whether you like the little blue Smurfs or not, there is no denying their spot as one of the best 80's cartoons. The nine-year run of the original series is a testament to the popularity of the show. "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" (1983-1987). Every little boy that grew up in the 80's wanted to be He-Man. On the other side of the coin, just about every little boy that grew up in the 80's also owned a Skeletor action figure as well. "M.A.S.K." (1985-1986). This was a direct rip-off of the popular "G.I. Joe" (1985-1986) cartoons and ran at the same time as "G.I. Joe" (1985-1986). What made this one of the best 80's cartoons was the seemingly never-ending supply of transformable toys that the M.A.S.K. team had access to. You never knew what to expect from one episode to the next. "G.I. Joe" (1985-1986). The "G.I. Joe" (1985-1986) cartoons worked in conjunction with the development of the line of G.I. Joe toys. The stories always had a moral, and the characters of the show would often be featured in small public service announcements aimed at helping children make better decision. "Jem" (1985-1988). Children can sometimes be easily separated into boys and girls by television cartoon producers. The creators of "Jem" (1985-1988) went right to the girl audience and hit a huge home run with this very popular cartoon show. "My Little Pony" (1986-1987). The "My Little Pony" (1986-1987) original cartoon run was only one two season. But it has lived on in syndication as one of the best 80's cartoons ever made. "Super Mario Brothers Super Show!" (1989). Video games started to become extremely popular in the 1980's, but the characters had a hard time catching on with cartoon fans. This show gets a nod as one of the best 80's cartoons because it was one of the better video game cartoons to be produced. It only lasted one season, but it was fun to watch. "DuckTales" (1986-1991). The Disney people were experimenting with live action movies in the 1980's, but they did manage to put together the story of Scrooge McDuck and his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. This show introduced a whole list of characters we would never see again including Ma Beagle and Doofus.

Pac-10 led by deep Washington squad

The Pac-10 may only receive two invites to the NCAA tournament this season, and for now, only two teams appear worthy.

The Huskies slipped up a bit this past week, falling by two points on the road against Stanford. But UW didn’t dwell on the loss long, bouncing back to rout California on Sunday.

There is no doubt that the Huskies are the deepest team in the conference and they hold close to a 10-points-per-game advantage over the next highest scoring team. It is hard to see UW losing a conference game at home, where they are almost impossible to beat.

Oregon women’s basketball: THE PRESSURE POINT | Taking on a greater scoring load, Nia Jackson drives Oregon’s offense

When a game is tight and a point guard is looking for places to distribute the basketball, the hoop isn’t a bad place to go.

Especially when that point guard is scoring the way Oregon junior Nia Jackson has over the past two weeks.

Jackson enjoyed the most prolific scoring stretch of her career during three games this month, averaging 23 points in narrow wins over Washington State and Washington and a close loss to Southern California. Only double-teaming by UCLA, and a cold that Jackson is only now getting over, finally slowed her down in the Ducks’ loss to the Bruins on Saturday.

Thirty years ago today, the 52 American hostages in Iran were released after 444 days of captivity.

Since the hostages were taken in a semi-official "riot" in reaction to President Carter's allowing the ex-shah of Iran to enter the US for medical treatment, and because Carter had attempted to rescue the hostages by military means, and because once the supposedly-religious Iranian fascist leaders hate you, they hate you forever (and God therefore does too), the hostages could not be released until Carter was no longer president of the United States.

Lifestyle changes are like new shoes

I love shoes. Anyone who knows me also knows this little tidbit about me. Even as I type this column, I am wearing a new pair. There isn’t a shoe store in the world I could go into and resist buying a pair — or three. Just ask my husband. I am sure he would tell you about the time I took my Girl Scout troop to sell cookies at Shoe Carnival. They spent the two hours ardently selling box after box to customers while I perused the store for a new pair of heels. I came home with three pairs, and none of them were for anyone else.

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez “Being A Firefighter, It’s Very Similar To Being A Quarterback”

On his confidence in being a leader and how much of it came from his father…

Wow. I think part of it you’re born with and you learn from other people, from my older brothers, from my dad, from my mom. From my dad’s side, him being a firefighter, it’s very similar to being a quarterback because he has his own group, his team, and they rely on each other. They count on each other and they need to be accountable to each other with their lives. While our trade isn’t quite (risking) our lives, it’s wins and losses and that can change people’s careers, so it’s important to us.

Write for the New York Times?

One of the nice things about Facebook is that I get to converse online with kindred souls facing the same dearth of paid writing assignments in this economy.  One recent conversation turned to the current journalistic reporting on the Tucson massacre and the lack of integrity in the mainstream media.  I wrote an op-ed column for the New York Sun from 2002 to 2008 until it folded during the economic meltdown; its demise was the end of decent reporting in New York City.  It's been a financial struggle for me since then, but I would like to think that my principles are still intact.  Still, when the hypothetical question was posed to all of us about whether we'd write for the New York Times, I was surprised to find that many of my correspondents found this possibility a viable and even enviable choice.

Poll Of The Week: The Cubs’ Off-season

With the trading of Tom Gorzelanny to the Washington Nationals, the Cubs’ off-season for the most part is complete. Sure, they may make a few moves here and there, but no more major moves are expected. When the start of the off-season arrived, Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry set out to acquire a front line starting pitcher, a new first baseman, and a veteran reliever. However, Hendry was not given a lot of resources to acquire the things he needed, so it required him to be creative in the deals he made. Well if the Cubs’ off-season proved anything, it proved that Jim Hendry is still one of the most creative General Manager’s in the game today.

The 2010 Chiefs: Where Are They Now?

AUTHOR: Victor Wishna | IN: Chiefs | COMMENTS: 11 Comments |

So I can’t prove it, but I am pretty sure—really, almost positive—that Todd Haley is my cable guy.

He showed up at my door yesterday afternoon (and, might I say, well within the waiting window I had been given) and claimed his name was “Justin.” But from the moment we made eye contact—a lingering, suspicious, Larry David-type stare-down —I could tell he sensed I was on to him. That faint goatee, the tuft of mullet sticking out from under his baseball cap, a brooding, slightly dubious expression—he was a dead ringer for the Chiefs coach, and it dawned on me: I had never met this man before, and I have never met Todd Haley. But I have also never seen them both in the same room at the same time.

Memo To Chiefs: Defense Wins Championships

I can’t speak for any other Kansas City Chiefs fans out there, but I was very jealous of the four teams that advanced to the conference championships this weekend.

Yes, I am jealous that “my” team is done for the season and they are still playing.

Yes, I am jealous that the fans of one of those four teams will get the experience of cheering on their team to a Super Bowl win, something that I have never known.

Gene Chizik bags Bear, but college football in Houston and Heart are the real winners

Chris Ault still remembers sneaking into the back of a ballroom in the early 1970s to hear Bear Bryant . The man in the houndstooth hat was giving a speech in Miami. Ault felt he had to be there.

He was a young football coach after all and that's what a young football coach should do.

Another Chiefs Offseason Wondering If A Receiver Is Coming - Arrowhead Pride

It's a familiar offseason refrain for Kansas City Chiefs fans: "We need a No. 1 receiver." It seems every offseason -- at least dating back to Derrick Alexander -- Chiefs fans have been calling for a receiver.

The SEC's top 10 moments in 2010 - College Football Nation Blog - ESPN

As we look back one more time at the 2010 college football season, I’m faced with an impossible task.

College football: Ricky Stanzi 'humbled' by Senior Bowl invite

NFL auditions begin soon. For Lake Catholic graduate Ricky Stanzi, his will be on the biggest stage.

Stanzi, who recently completed his college career at Iowa, has been invited to participate in the top college football all-star game, the Jan. 29 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

"I'm humbled," Stanzi said on the school's website about the invitation. "To be in a position to go out there and compete with a ton of great athletes from across the country in front of NFL coaches and scouts, it's just a tremendous opportunity, and I'm very thankful to have a chance to do it."
