Eagles' season ends in loss to Appalachian St. | savannahnow.com

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The basketball season for Georgia Southern's men ended Friday night after losing to Appalachian State, 65-57, in the opening round of the Southern Conference basketball tournament at McKenzie Arena.

The South Division's sixth-seeded Eagles finished with a 5-27 record, setting the school mark for losses in a season.

GSU stayed close before the Mountaineers (16-14) went on an 11-4 run midway through the second half.

The Eagles trimmed Appalachian's lead to 58-54 with one minute, 11 seconds left before the Mountaineers pulled away down the stretch.

Ben Drayton led GSU with 16 points. Jelani Hewitt had 15 and Marvin Baynham added 13.

Donald Sims paced Appalachian with 20 points.

ASU advanced to play the South Division No. 2 seed Wofford today at approximately 4:15 p.m.

Adam Miller pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter to lead South Carolina Beaufort past Northwood University.

Miller struck out nine and didn't walk anyone.

Ty Main, David O'Neal and DeShontay Berry led the way offensively with two hits apiece.

Armstrong Atlantic rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat West Liberty State at Pirate Field.

A wild pitch by reliever Drew Peterson brought in the winning run as No. 22 AASU (12-2) won its 11th in a row.

Michael Price led the Pirates with three hits. John Roberts had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs.

AVE MARIA, Fla. - Pete Leseniewski's bases-clearing double in the fifth inning gave Ave Maria University a victory over SCAD Savannah at Bowie's Ballpark.

Jamison Sweat had two hits and two runs batted in for the Bees who slipped to 13-10 overall and 7-3 in The Sun Conference.

STATESBORO - Eric Phillips' run-scoring double in the seventh inning propelled Georgia Southern past St. John's in the opener of a three-game set at J.I. Clements Stadium.

Phillips' hit snapped a 3-3 deadlock and boosted GSU's record to 7-3.

Michael Burruss had four hits for the Eagles. Matt Murphy threw five shutout inning in relief to pick up the win.

Division II's top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic women's tennis team did not lose a set while blanking No. 11 Clayton State at Bacon Park.

Alida Muller-Wehlau, Barbora Krtickova, Aleksandra Filipovski, Tina Ronel, Joanna Szymczyk and Kathleen Henry all won singles matches for the Pirates, who improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Peach Belt Conference play.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Armstrong Atlantic opened the 2011 Mid-South Tournament with a victory over Carson-Newman.

It was the fifth straight win for the Pirates (10-1).

Megan Buckett and Whitney Galloway each drove in three runs for the winners. April Jowers collected a pair of hits to extend her hitting streak to 27 games, a Peach Belt Conference record.

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - Jordy McManus scored five goals to lead No. 13 SCAD Savannah past North Florida.

Goalie Kreyton Polka recorded nine saves for the Bees, who raised their record to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the five-team SELC Southeast Division.
