USD Goes 1-3 To Finish UNI Classic

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of South Dakota softball team went 1-3 over the weekend to finish 1-4 at the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic.

The Coyotes are off until the Rebel Spring games, which will be held on March 5-13 in Kissimmee, Fla. The Coyotes open the event with a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky on March 5.

WIS.-GREEN BAY 3, USD 0: Katelyn Wudel finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while Lindsey Boyd was 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Alexa Rudeen and Christine Broders (Yankton) also had hits or the Coyotes.

Mel Johnson pitched well in defeat for the Coyotes. She went seven innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs. She struck out four and walked only one.

NORTHERN IOWA 8, USD 0: A six-run second inning by UNI, which went unbeaten in the tournament, proved to be the difference. The Coyotes got hits from Johnson and Boyd in the game.

Missy Blackburn took the loss on the mound, going the distance. She allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs.

USD 10, UTEP 2: USD got its lone win in the tournament Saturday, beating Texas-El Paso in a five-inning game.

Johnson was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Boyd was 1-for-2 with three RBI. Jessica Lussman was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Wudel and Rudeen each added a hit.

Johnson picked up the win on the mound, going the distance. She allowed just three hits and two earned runs, striking out three.

DRAKE 6, USD 0: Drake blew open a scoreless game with a four-run sixth to claim the victory.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through five innings as Blackburn and Drake’s Jenna DeLong were locked in a pitching duel.

Blackburn pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs (two earned). She struck out two and walked two. Paige Policky finished the contest in relief.
