Spurs show no love for Nets - It may be Valentine's Day but the San Antonio Spurs (46-9) showed no love tonight towards the New Jersey Nets (17-39) as they beat the Nets 102 to 85 at the Prudential Center. For the most part, the Spurs got the win in the paint dominating the Nets 40 to 28. Tim Duncan was doing most of the damage for the Spurs as he scored 15 points, three blocks, and grabbed 11 boards. Ginobili back in starting lineup - When Spurs coach Gregg Popovich moved Manu Ginobili to the bench for Saturday’s victory at Washington, he promised his All-Star guard it was a one-night switch. The Spurs were on their fourth game in five nights, and Popovich wanted to be sure Ginobili was fresh for the fourth quarter. When the Spurs went on to beat the Wizards by 24 with George Hill starting at shooting guard, Ginobili wasn’t so sure. “I thought after the kind of performance we had, it was a risk,” Ginobili said. Popovich kept his word and re-inserted Ginobili into the starting lineup Monday against the Nets, to similar results — a 102-85 victory. READ MORE
Rockets call on bench for win over Nuggets - Battier, Lee lead charge from 15-point deficit. The key in a good rope-a-dope is to know when to get off the ropes. This time, the Rockets did not wait until they were pummeled. And when they defended themselves, they came out swinging. They started horribly again but were down just 15 — better than Saturday’s 23-point deficit — when they rallied to pound the Denver Nuggets. With the bench bringing a much-needed jolt of energy and Shane Battier hounding Carmelo Anthony, the Rockets came back to lead by as much as 30 and blow out Denver 121-102 on Monday night at Toyota Center. Rockets notes: Lee concerned before trade deadline - Lee along for the ride. Rockets guard Courtney Lee, who had been traded after each of his first two NBA seasons, said he is concerned with the trade deadline next week, but will be fine either way. "I'm happy," Lee said. "I've been traded twice so that doesn't faze me at all. Wherever I'm at, I enjoy. I'm going to be a professional and work hard. If that leads me to be somewhere else, I'll do the same." READ MORE
Stevenson still has some hops - A funny moment happened at the tail end of Monday's practice. Some members of the Dallas Mavericks questioned whether guard DeShawn Stevenson had any jumping abilities and were willing to put a small wager on it. "They don't think I have any hops,'' Stevenson said. READ MORE
Tyson Chandler has 2 T's rescinded, 4 total - By the end of the road trip Saturday night, Mavericks center Tyson Chandler had picked up two more technical fouls -- neither of which he felt he deserved -- to give him 10 on the season. On Monday, the league vindicated Chandler, rescinding the technicals he picked up in Wednesday's game at Sacramento and in Saturday's game at Houston. Total number of technicals is important because players that pile up 16 during the regular season are punished with a one-game suspension. Initially, it was thought the two rescinded technicals dropped Chandler's total to eight. READ MORE
Everyone's so comfortable with Mills, they might just take their pants off - Kicking off what I'm sure will be six weeks of "We can win this!" and "Are you ready to be a champion?" (Like anyone is going to answer, "Nope. I'm ready to go 74-88!"), Brian McTaggart starts it off with how awesome Brad Mills is. READ MORE
Astros set to keep good thing going under Mills - Brad Mills guided the Astros to a 40-33 second half in his first season as manager and with him returning for his second year, the players have a clear understanding what Mills expects. READ MORE
Michael Young won't be the first local star to be shown the door - If local pro teams were winning championships every year, maybe we would be less skeptical when hearing of another "tough decision" made about an aging player with a big contract. Perhaps we could lighten up, and say, rather unequivocally, "Hey, they know what they're doing." But since championships occur at a glacial pace here, who can blame us for being just a bit skeptical over what happens next regarding team chemistry and leadership and 600 quality at-bats in the case of Michael Young? Of Frank Lucchesi, Fort Shafter and Chuck Tanner - There was no live Major League Baseball in Hawaii when my dad was station at Fort Shafter. This was in 1968-71 before there was cable television and the self-exalted world wide leader in sports. There was only two ways to watch baseball at the time in Hawaii, where there was a military installation on every other acre. A quarter-century later, they were still fully prepared for the invasion of Japan. Never too late to be at full metal jacket. READ MORE
NFL files charge against union with labor board - The NFL filed an unfair labor practice charge against its players’ union with the National Labor Relations Board on Monday. The league’s filing says the union “consistently has failed to confer in good faith” during negotiations for a new contract and the union’s “conduct amounts to surface bargaining and an anticipatory refusal to bargain.” A statement e-mailed to The Associated Press by union spokesman George Atallah says the NFL’s “claim has absolutely no merit.” The NLRB is a federal agency that enforces the nation’s labor laws and referees labor-management disputes. Cowboys claim former OU linebacker Balogun off waivers - The Cowboys claimed Mike Balogun off waivers Monday, three days after the Buffalo Bills released the linebacker. Balogun, who was signed by Buffalo on Nov. 10 after being a member of Tampa Bay's practice squad, appeared in two games this past season and played mostly on special teams. READ MORE
Could an unlikely combo unlock title for Cowboys? - History, for whatever reason, has a tendency to repeat itself even when the parties involved don't intend to revive the past. The world works in mysterious ways. Case in point: Eleven years ago, two men were hired to join the staff of a head coach who was starting his first full season with a new organization. The two men were Rob Ryan and Mike Woicik. The head coach was Bill Belichick. The team was the New England Patriots. Ryan, a defensive assistant, was assigned to oversee the linebackers. Woicik was asked to run the strength and conditioning program. READ MORE

Cook died last week surrounded by his family. READ MORE
Texans the Worst NFL Expansion Franchise? Think Again - Richard Justice in the Chronicle today has a good piece about the Texans being questioned as the WORST expansion franchise. He brings up good points stating otherwise. "The Texans are the NFL’s 12th expansion franchise, and they’re nowhere close to being the worst. I know this because I spent an hour Sunday afternoon compiling all the numbers. The Texans have a .382 winning percentage after nine years. If that sounds bad, you need to think again mister. The Saints (.262), Bucs (.333), Falcons (.344) and Browns (.347) were all worse teams in their first nine seasons. If you’d likie to pick at every little thing, you’d point out seven teams—Cowboys, Dolphins, Bengals, Jags, Panthers, etc.—were better." READ MORE
Griner Fuels WBB Comeback Over Texas A&M - Lady Bears extend Big 12 lead, improving to 11-0 in league play. Odyssey Sims saw 6-foot-8 sophomore sensation Brittney Griner running down the court, and saw the look that only meant one thing for top-ranked Baylor. "I know when we lock eyes, she's great at passing the ball to me over the defenders," Griner said. "So I just took off running and looked at her, and gave her that look like, 'All right, I'm ready.'" That led to a go-ahead layup with 3 minutes left, the first of three consecutive baskets by Griner late that put the Lady Bears ahead to stay. And they survived another close call against fifth-ranked Texas A&M with a 67-58 victory Monday night. READ MORE
Texas not No. 1? It doesn't matter - So Texas isn't the No. 1 team in the country. And that doesn't matter. Yet. The Longhorns are on a roll at the right time of the season — a few weeks before the Madness — and there is plenty of time to make a run at one of four No. 1 seeds. After that, it's anyone's guess as to what will happen. This program is surging on the court and in the polls. Yep, the same program that started 17-0 last season and suffered a late-season collapse of such debilitating proportions that it carried over into football season. Notice I said ‘program' and not ‘team.' This isn't the same team — there are two key additions and a couple of key departures — but the same coaching staff and several of the same players. Texas' No. 2 ranking in the latest ESPN/USA Today poll behind a Kansas team it beat is slightly better than that third slot behind Kansas and once-bitten Ohio State in the Associated Press poll. Aggies can't finish upset - Just as Texas A&M was having a Valentine's Day to remember, the Baylor Lady Bears and Brittney Griner broke the Aggies' hearts -- again. Griner keyed an 11-2 run that propelled top-ranked Baylor to a 67-58 victory at the Ferrell Center on Monday night, virtually assuring the Lady Bears of winning the Big 12 title. Baylor (24-1, 11-0) has a two-game lead on the fifth-ranked Aggies (21-3, 9-2) with five games left in the regular season. READ MORE

Rice baseball: Hamilton gets starting nod at shortstop - Derek Hamilton will get the starting nod for Friday's season opener against Stanford over fellow freshman Shane Hoelscher, Rice coach Wayne Graham said Sunday. "(Hamilton) has been what we wanted at shortstop," Graham said. READ MORE

Williams fitting in with Stars, has solid debut - Jason Williams was brought in to Dallas to provide depth and give a boost to a depleted group of forwards, and after making his Stars debut Sunday afternoon, it seems like he’s going to be a very good fit here. Signed as a free agent out of the AHL on Saturday, the 30-year-old forward played well in his first game with his new team, even though the result, a tough 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, didn’t quite turn out the way he’d have liked. Injury woes continue for Stars - The injuries continue to mount for the Dallas Stars. Already missing several forwards, the Stars will be missing center Brad Richards as they open a three-game road trip in Edmonton on Tuesday. Richards suffered an undisclosed injury on the final shift of Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Columbus at American Airlines Center. “Brad Richards will not be coming on this trip with us. He suffered an injury on the last shift of the game on a hit in the neutral zone,” Stars coach Marc Crawford said following Monday’s practice in Frisco. “He’s not feeling 100 percent today. Brad would like to join us but we think it is the best measure for him to stay behind and get him back to 100 percent before he rejoins the club. We’re going to be cautious here and do not only what is best for Brad Richards but also for the Dallas Stars.” READ MORE
