A Day in the NHL: OT Thriller in Washington, Sutton Gets Five, Torotrella vs. Thornton - Too Many Men on the Site - A NHL blog

The Night that Was:

Ottawa just couldn’t stay hot against the defending Cup Champions as the Sens fell to the Boston Bruins 5-3. The Sens opened the scoring five minutes in when Nick Foligno’s third gave them a 1-0 lead, and after Milan Lucic tied it, Stephane Da Costa gave the Sens the lead again with his third of the season off of a beautiful set up from Foligno. The Bruins came back with two in the second, the first from Patrice Bergeron and the second from Chris Kelly. Jared Cowen’s first NHL goal tied it at three to start the third, but just over a minute later Johnny Boychuk gave the B’s the lead, and Daniel Paille sealed the 5-3 win 37 seconds later. Tim Thomas made 23 saves for the win as Kelly, Zdeno Chara, and Rich Peverley all had two points. Foligno had a goal and two assists for the Sens while Da Costa and Chris Neil had two each for Ottawa.

With four wins in their last five, the Tampa Bay Lightning were hoping to keep the wins coming against the Carolina Hurricanes. Things started well when the mustachioed Teddy Purcell opened the scoring with his fourth but Chad LaRose tied it with just two minutes left in the opening frame. The second period belonged to Jeff Skinner as last year’s Calder Winner scored his fifth and sixth to put the ‘Canes up 3-1. Brett Connolly cut it to one with his first NHL goal midway through the third before Chad LaRose gave Carolina a 4-2 win. Cam Ward made 28 saves for the victory while Dwayne Roloson was on the hook for the loss.

Washington was home to what was probably the most entertaining game of the night last night as the Capitals hoped to stay unbeaten at home against the Ducks. Anaheim made it look like a long shot for Ovie and Company as Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne got Anaheim out to a 2-0 lead after one. Selanne would add his second to make it 3-0 before Joel Ward and Dennis Wideman cut it to a one-goal lead. Corey Perry’s fifth restored a two-goal lead before Troy Brouwer made it 4-3, and Nick Backstrom scored with just 42 seconds left to send it to overtime. Then, two minutes in to the extra frame, Backstrom’s second gave the Caps the 5-4 win to move to 6-0 at home. It was a tale of two very different stories in net as Tomas Vokoun made just 11 saves while Jonas Hiller had to make 35 amidst Teemu’s 4-point night and three assists from Cam Fowler. Speaking of three assist nights, Brooks Laich had one of those for the Caps.

In a tight one in Detroit the Wings looked to have a win wrapped up until Drew Miller woke the Wild up. Minnesota trailed 1-0 on a first period goal by Nicklas Lidstrom before Drew Miller ran Josh Harding behind the net early in the third period. It took about 13 more minutes, but the Wild tied the game on a power play when Mikko Koivu scored his first of the season, and then Devin Setoguchi scored the winner on Minnesota’s only shot of overtime. Harding stayed in the game after getting run, making 36 saves, while Jimmy Howard stopped 25 of 27. Both Koivu and Setoguchi finished with two-point nights.

The Rest of the Story:

The Vancouver Canucks visited the Calgary Flames last night and scored a big 5-1 win. Alex Tanguay had the lone Flames goal as Vancouver got goals out of five different players and points out of 12. Alex Edler had three points.

What’s on Tonight?

A light Wednesday as Philadelphia heads to Buffalo, Toronto pays a trip to New Jersey to see the Devils, and the Phoenix Coyotes head to Colorado as they take on the Avalanche.

The Injury Bug:

-Mike Green did not play last night for the Caps, missing a third game with a twisted ankle. John Erskine returned from shoulder surgery, making his season debut.

-Roberto Luongo was caught in the head awkwardly last night off of a rush against Calgary. After contact, Luongo stayed down but he did finish the game.

-Jussi Jokinen suffered a lower body injury during the third period of yesterday’s game. He left the game and did not return.

-The Ottawa Senators have placed Daniel Alfredsson on injured reserve with a concussion, however they are hopeful that by the end of the weeklong stint he’ll be able to return to the lineup.

-The Flyers will be without Matt Read and Daniel Briere on Wednesday as both miss time with upper-body injuries.

-There is no target date for Sidney Crosby to return. It has been said he’s out at least until November 11th.

News and Rumours Around the League:

-Andy Sutton received a five-game suspension yesterday for his hit on Avalanche rookie Gabriel Landeskog. The head was identified as the principal point of contact, and was also described as being ‘recklessly targeted’.

-If the Rangers and Sharks were to meet in the Stanley Cup Final, then this would certainly get dug up again. After Joe Thornton called the Rangers the ‘softest team we (the Sharks) played against’ on their road trip, Tortorella did what he does best: shoot back. Torts called it “classless” and “uncalled for” but also said “here’s a player popping off about our team, and Joe hasn’t won a G****** thing in this league.”

-Sticking with the Rangers, Sean Avery cleared re-entry waivers and is set to re-join the team.

The Overlooked Fantasy Line of the Night:

Plenty of big nights, but Brooks Laich is the one who might fly under the radar. He had three assists, a plus-three rating, and three shots on goal in just under 20 minutes of ice time. Cam Fowler also had a good game, tossing in three assists with an even rating.
