Food Lion opens in Meyersdale

People were lined up early Wednesday morning outside the new Food Lion supermarket, 7276 Mason Dixon Highway, Meyersdale.

“We’re happy to have it here,” said Millie Brown of Salisbury. She was accompanied by Betty Showalter, also of Salisbury, who was anxious to see what the store has to offer.

The first 200 customers received a brown bag of nonperishable items. People also were treated to doughnuts and were able to register for drawings.

“We’re very excited to open the first Food Lion in the Meyersdale area,” said Lisa Reckner, manager of the 25,000-square-foot facility. She has been employed by the company for 10 years. “We’ve created a store unlike any other in the area, with an enlarged produce section, a deli/bakery and fresh meat and seafood. Management wanted to create a large state-of-the-art supermarket. I want to thank everybody who came to our grand opening.”

Vivian Smith, an office employee who had worked in the Meyersdale Shop ‘n Save for almost 10 years, is an office employee at the Food Lion. The Shop ‘n Save closed on Tuesday. It had been open since 1984 and had about 30 employees. The new supermarket has 45 employees.

“A lot (of employees) from there came here,” Smith said. “It is kind of sad to see it close because a lot of older people who live in town could walk there. But the Food Lion is a great opportunity for Meyersdale.”

Food Lion plans to be a part of the community, Reckner said. As a start of that relationship, she presented checks of $500 each to Meyersdale elementary, middle and high schools.

Food Lion is based in Salisbury, N.C. It operates more than 1,300 supermarkets under the names Food Lion, Bloom, Harveys and Reid’s. Food Lion has 74,000 employees in 11 states.
