Al Golden says QB Jacory Harris is leading the offseason by example By DAVID HENDERSON Updated 3:00 PM EST, Tue, Feb 8, 2011
The University of Miami 's new head coach says rising senior quarterback Jacory Harris is leading the 'Canes this offseason by example.
Al Golden told The Palm Beach Post 's Jorge Milian , "He's had a great attitude. He's been working out just about every day. I think it's a sense of renewal for him." Golden said Harris' confidence was shaken last season -- and for good reason.
Harris had a very forgettable 2010 campaign after getting knocked silly in Virginia and missing four starts. JH12 tossed 14 TD's and 15 INT's (including the last second INT against USF) and that horrific Sun Bowl performance aginst Notre Dame (3 picks with just 7 attempts).
If anyone wearing green and orange needed a fresh start, it was Harris. Jacory came to The U from Northwestern High as the centerpiece of former coach Randy Shannon 's number one ranked recruiting class in 2008.
Now, Jacory will be locked in a battle for the starting job this fall with rising sophomore Stephen Morris. Morris showed flashes of brillance last year (but also threw more picks than TD's) and the starting QB job should be a huge focus of attention when spring ball starts in about a month.
"I think he (Harris) knows deep down inside that it's going to be ultra-competitive this spring, but he also realizes that he's played his best football when he's had competition," Golden told the Post.
The last time the UM job was up for grabs was Harris' freshman season when he battled now Purdue QB Robert Marve. Harris put up good stats in 2008 when he started two games and threw 12 TD's with only 7 INT's.
Here's hoping regime change in Coral Gables will bring out the best in Jacory for his senior season.
