Missouri S&T, Truman State Continue to Lead at NSISC

Missouri S&T expanded its lead to nearly 140 points in the team competition as it moved closer to a fifth straight championship of the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Championships at Delta State University Friday night. 

The Miners got their first event win of the meet to get things started Friday, as Zach Lemons captured the title in the 400-yard individual medley win a time of 4:01.17. Lemons won the final by more than two seconds over Drury's Jason Bell.

Danny Murphy had a third place showing in the 400-IM in 4:04.01 and joined Luke Norris, Jeff Enge and Andrew Schranck on S&T's 800-yard freestyle relay team that finished third as well in 6:52.27 in the final event of the evening.

Schranck was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 50 seconds flat as did Lemons in the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.38 seconds, while S&T got three fifth place finishes on an individual basis from Norris in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.25, Andrew Simek in the 100-breaststroke in 57.60 seconds and Sean Deegan in the 100-backstroke in 52.21 seconds.

Jacob Dole came in sixth place behind Deegan in the 100-back in 52.24 seconds, while Matt Zieger finished seventh in 1:44.28 in the 200-freestyle along with Zlatan Hamzic in the 100-breaststroke with a time of 58.36 seconds.   Phil Arve was eighth in the 400-individual medley in 4:13.66.

The Miners also got consolation final victories from Nate Kamrath in the 400-IM as he won that race in 4:08.36, Simek in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.28 seconds and Enge in the 100-backstroke in 52.80 seconds.

Hayden Price posted a 10th place showing in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.13 as did Luis Nesrala in the 100-backstroke in 53.03 seconds, with Alfredo Martinez finishing 11th in the 100-butterfly in 52.03 seconds and Alex Griffin taking 12th in the 100-breaststroke in 1:00.65.

Missouri S&T has 589 points after three days of competition and leads Henderson State by 138½ points with one day remaining. Ouachita Baptist is currently in third place and Drury sits in fourth.

Sophomore Tony Hernandez broke a six-year old school record in the men’s 100 breaststroke while the Truman women continue to lead after the third day of the New South Intercollegiate Swim Championships.

Hernandez swam 56.55 in the afternoon prelim session to break Andy Harkin’s 2004 record of 57.43. Hernandez they touched the wall in 57.13 in the finals of the event to place third for the Bulldogs.

Jerod Simek was among three men’s swimmers in the finals of the 400IM. Simek touched in fifth with a time of 4:05.61 while Matthew Fletcher was sixth and Sam Collier seventh.

Out of the five individual events contested on the women’s side, Truman had three first place finishers. Taylor Birsa led three in the finals of the 400IM as she swam in 4:30.15. Margaux Kent beat out teammate Emily Buss in the 100 breast as Kent timed at 1:05.12 to Buss’ 1:05.27.

Stacey Wymer took top honors in the 100 back as she edged out Beth Eyanson in a time of 57.21.

Casey Jepsen finished second in the 200 free while Eyanson added a third place finish in the 100 fly.

Jepsen, Stephanie Myers, Claire Myers and Tanya Sylvester closed the night with a second place finish in the 800 free relay and gave the Bulldogs a 66-point lead over Henderson State heading into Saturday’s finale.

The men sit in fifth place with 309 points while Missouri S&T leads the meet with 589 points.
