HUNTSVILLE, AL. - The University of Alabama-Huntsville women's basketball team wasn't expected to make the Gulf South Conference tournament this season, but the Chargers appear to be well on their way.
Roy Heintz's team is currently 10-11 overall, but is 5-3 in the Eastern Division, good enough for third place. UAH could move into second place with a win today at West Alabama (16-5, 4-3) and a loss by West Georgia to league-leading North Alabama.
"We've put ourselves in position to make the tournament, but we've got to finish what we've started," Heintz said. "Every game from here on out is big."
After today's game, UAH visits West Georgia and Oakland City before hosting Lambuth and UNA to close out the regular season.
The Chargers, 4-1 in their last five games, outlasted the Tigers 78-74 last month at Spragins Hall behind 21 points from Andrea Bennett. UAH also held Mystee Dale, one of the top players in the GSC, to 14 points on 4-of-14 shooting. Dale entered the game averaging 21 points per game.
West Alabama, a half-game back of UAH, has lost only two home games, falling to Division II power Delta State and UNA.
Across town, Alabama A&M (11-10, 7-4) visits Alabama State (6-16, 3-8) today in an important Southwestern Athletic Conference game. Tipoff is 3 p.m.
The Bulldogs are 2-4 in their last six games after starting league play 5-0, but are coming off of a win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday night. A&M downed ASU 55-50 last month at Elmore Gym, but the Hornets have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.
If A&M is to pull off a victory, the Bulldogs will have to slow down ASU forward Tanika Jackson, who is averaging 19.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Jackson had 18 points and 15 rebounds in the first meeting.
"What makes her so dangerous is the second shot," A&M coach Altherias Warmley said. "She gets a lot of offensive rebounds and is able to score or draw fouls to get to the free throw line. We've got to make sure we box her out.
"We're going to throw a wave of different people at her and give her different looks and hopefully, we can make her work on the defensive end as well."
