Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton and Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek headline the list of 2010 AAU Sullivan Award semifinalists. The list also includes athletes in baton twirling, golf, volleyball and wrestling among other sports.
Presented annually since 1930, the Sullivan Award honors the nation’s outstanding amateur athlete and is based on leadership, character and sportsmanship. Past winners include Michael Phelps, Tim Tebow and Shawn Johnson. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in New York on March 14. The 12 nominees:
The Honda Award winner for volleyball, Brown led Penn State to four consecutive women’s national championships. She was the Big Ten Conference player of the year and a three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American. Brown led the Nittany Lions in kills with 521 and was second in digs with 281.
Last season, the guard led Brigham Young’s men’s basketball team to its first NCAA tournament victory in 17 years, scoring 37 points vs. Florida. Fredette was named to the All-Mountain West Conference team.
As a freshman on North Carolina Greensboro’s men’s golf team last season, Hoadley had two top-10 finishes and was named All-Southern Conference. In 2007, he won the North Carolina Junior Championship.
She holds the women’s overall world record and 45 national records in water skiing. At the under-21 world championships, she won the women’s slalom, tricks and overall titles. She was named the USA Water Ski Athlete of the Year in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010.
The 2010 Pacific-10 women’s player of the year was the second Stanford volleyball player to register 2,000 career kills. She also had career highs last season in hitting percentage. Klineman is a four-time AVCA All-American.
After winning the 2010 Olympic gold medal in men’s figure skating, Lysacek was named Sportsman of the Year by the U.S. Olympic Committee. He became the first American man to win Olympic gold since 1988. Lysacek is the 2009 world champion.
The senior forward became the Connecticut women’s basketball team’s all-time leading scorer in December and helped lead the Huskies to a record 90-game winning streak. Moore won the Naismith and Wooden awards in 2008-09.
Auburn’s quarterback threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a Bowl Championship Series title game victory vs. Oregon. He became the third player in school history to win the Heisman Trophy.
She won silver at the 2010 wrestling world championships, falling to two-time Olympic champ Kaori Icho. Pirozhkova won gold at the University World Championships and a Pan American Championships title.
Last season, the Nevada women’s basketball guard averaged 16.1 points and was the Western Athletic Conference’s newcomer of the year. She transferred from Sheridan College, where she led the nation in scoring.
A graduate of Florida State, Wimberley has won 15 world championships in baton twirling. Last year, she was the overall grand champion of the U.S. Twirling Association. In the World Baton Twirling Federation, she was the women’s world freestyle champion.
Arkansas’ Williams won the 2010 Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end. He finished his football career with 152 catches and 1,855 receiving yards.
