A U.S. Air Force Academy alumni group for gays and lesbians is optimistic that the institution will transition smoothly after "don't ask, don't tell" repeal is implemented.
"I don't think it's going to be a big issue, honestly," Blue Alliance executive director Greg Mooneyham, a 1987 academy graduate, told the Associated Press. "I think the [AFA] administration is going to do the right thing."
Colorado representativ Jared Polis, one of four openly gay congressman currently in office and a member of the academy's board of visitors, told the AP he predicts openly gay cadets will likely face less obstacles than women, who were first admitted into the academy in 1976. In recent years the Air Force Academy has faced several scandals, including chaplains proselytizing cadets and top officials who were fired after female cadets reported being ignored by commanders when they had reported incidents of sexual assaults by fellow cadets.
