Miss North Carolina a Miss America talent winner - National pageant | Examiner.com

Country met soul Tuesday night when Miss North Carolina took to a Las Vegas stage to clog dance to Sam and Dave’s R&B classic Soul Man.

The performance netted Adrienne Core designation as a preliminary winner in the pageant’s talent category and a $2,000 scholarship.

The final night of competition and the crowning of a new Miss America will be broadcast live Jan. 15 from Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Miss America 2011 serves as chief spokesperson for the Children’s Miracle Network, which raises money to help about 170 hospitals.

Core, 22, said she will, if crowned, lend her national platform to help the V Foundation for Cancer Research, which was set up in 1993 to honor championship NCAA basketball coach Jim Valvano.

The former Miss Raleigh was crowned Miss North Carolina last year.

A magna cum laude graduate of North Carolina State University, she hopes a math teacher at the high school level.

She is a resident of Erwin, NC.
