ICCE basketball beats Central Academy

Necessity was the mother of clean roads Tuesday as Immanuel Christian swept a basketball doubleheader at home against Central Academy, while other Golden Triangle schools delayed, canceled, or rescheduled prep sports events due to weather-related issues.

With the regular season growing short before district tournaments and playoffs, schools are trying to find a way to wedge games into small spaces of time. So Immanuel Christian and Central Academy worked in their Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class A, District 3 game in Steens.

"We were booked up the rest of the days we could get the game in," Immanuel Christian boys basketball coach Billy Thomas said after his squad defeated Central Academy 54-30.

Immanuel Christian girls basketball coach Jenny Hutcherson said getting the game played was crucial.

"The school was closed, but we had to play tonight to get this district game in before the district tournaments," she said. "The junior varsity tournament begins on Jan. 24, and the varsity starts the next week. We have games every day but Thursday until then, and (Central Academy) had a conflict Thursday."

Justin James led Immanuel Christian's boys with 16 points and 14 rebounds, followed by Wade Lee with 15 points and nine rebounds. A.J. Johnson added eight rebounds and seven points.

Rowdy Rigdon was Central Academy's leading scorer with 15 points.

Immanuel Christian will play host to Kemper Academy in a district contest Friday, beginning with junior varsity games beginning at 4 p.m.

"We are first in the district, but they beat us by four points last time we played," Thomas said.

Taylor Baudoin had a team-high 18 points to go with 11 rebounds and 10 steals in the girls basketball team's 58-29 victory. Meghan Cooper followed with 11 points, while Bailey Edwards had nine points and nine rebounds for the Lady Rams (13-11).

Many of the schools that were closed Tuesday due to the weather have worked out plans for the games they have missed.

Columbus High School Athletic Director Rusty Greene said the status of the basketball games against Starkville, which were scheduled for Tuesday, is under review.

"It will be determined soon," he said. "The games will follow what the schools do. If the schools are closed, nothing is going to be played."

New Hope High School girls soccer coach Mary Nagy said her squad probably wouldn't see non-district opponent MSMS again this year after Tuesday's match wasn't played.

"Neither one of us can find any room with the district games we have left to play," Nagy said. "We finish our district games and go into the playoffs on Jan. 21. Because it wasn't a district game, we both felt like we didn't have to try to squeeze it in."

New Hope will play host to Saltillo on Friday in its next Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A, Division 2 game. It will be Senior Night for both New Hope teams.

The Lady Trojans will look to improve on their 11-2 record (2-0 in district) after beating West Point and Saltillo last week. New Hope beat West Point 5-1 on goals by Brittany Walker (two), Reagan Hern, Farris Bradley, and Effie Morrison. Walker had two assists, while Demi Menotti and Abby Wilson each had one.

Morrison had a hat trick (three goals) in a 3-2 victory against Saltillo. Sarah Hern, Madison Thrasher, and Ashley Martian had assists, and Brandi Brantley had 24 saves.

The New Hope boys (4-8, 2-0) beat Saltillo 5 - 1 thanks to two goals from Tanner Ryals and one each by Zac Nagy, Roger Shilling, and Franklin Richardson Jr. Parker Earhart had an assist. Ryals scored three times in a 6-2 victory against West Point. Josh McKay had two goals and Richardson Jr. had the other.

Heritage Academy doesn't foresee making up its contest against Kemper Academy before the season ends.

"We will probably not reschedule the game," said Bruce Allsup, Heritage Academy's athletic director and girls basketball coach. "We'll go over there next year after they came over here this year. We just rotate games over the two years."

Rescheduled contests from Tuesday include Washington School's basketball games at Starkville Academy (beginning at 4 p.m. Friday) and the MHSAA Class 4A, Division 3 soccer match with Amory at Caledonia (5:30 p.m. Thursday).
