WEDNESDAY’S LIST ... of beans ’n’ greens ’n’ other things:
FROM THE mail box, in part:
“My name is Betty Benier.
“I am 76 years old ... and what I'm writing about is the (Anniston) Star of Dec 7
“I DID NOT SEE ANY THING ABOUT PEARL HARBOR DAY!
“Sure hope you can tell me I just missed seeing it. There was just a bit about it on one of the evening news. Later that evening on one of the cable news, they showed photos of the 69th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day.
“Has our nation forgot all the many men that died that day, and the years that followed? Or is it not correct to say anything about what happened?
“Thanks for listening.
I’ve read the above letter three or four times and have to admit it sort of got to me.
“Age luck” kept me from ever being shot at in a war, but Pearl Harbor and World War II was, in a sense, “my war.”
Those were my boyhood years, and I had five uncles in that war, four of them brothers, four saw combat, two in Europe, two in the South Pacific.
They and their peers were and are my heroes and, in the years I’ve been writing this column, I don’t recall ever skipping at least a mention of Pearl Harbor and Dec. 7.
I didn’t this time and, as Betty points out, neither did our newspaper.
That is sad and regretful, but it is also makes a point of how time fades our memories and our sense of history, even that in which we’ve actually lived. It is a fact that my generation knew as little of World War I as “now” generations know of World War II.
It’s sad, Betty, very much so ... and I know I haven’t answered your question very well, have I?
*** OUR NEWSPAPER did carry a story Sunday updating the renovation status of the old 10-story building on Noble.
The story referred to the building as the Watermark Tower and also mentioned it had been known as the Liles Building and AmSouth Bank Building.
As a small boy, I think it was also known as the “Wilson Building.” If I’m right, why?
Help me here.
*** IF YOU will, let me visit for a minute one of the more vital issues of our times ... cereal box tops.
Some come with a slot and a tab for re-closing, others with a notch and a tab for the same purpose.
The notch top with the slip-in tab is about 200 percent more effective ... so why doesn’t the “slot ’n tab” just go away.
Hey, I’ve warned you many times over the years that this column is dedicated to the more weighty issues of our time.
*** TV SPORTS announcers say the dumbest things ...
In the blur of college football bowls on the tube, I heard this one:
“I’m surprised they didn’t get a potential flag on that one.”
“Potential” flag?
Come on, Man ...
But in all fairness, those of us who use the printed word for pay get to review our “printed” word before it’s in print. Those guys who live with the spoken word, don’t have that luxury.
But “potential” flag?
Come on, Man?
*** BIRTHDAYS: Dec. 25 – Jason Vice; Jan. 5 – Jerry Howie, Bryan Vice and David Vice; Jan. 6 – Vivian Conner.
A special birthday nod to Jacksonville’s Ernie Valine who tapped out number 91 back on Dec. 23. Ernie wasn’t a Christmas baby, but he’s seen 91 and that’s a very good run.
