Mens conference bigger, better at Prestonwood

Photo courtesy of Prestonwood Baptist Church - Pastor Jack Graham of Prestonwood Baptist Church has been leading men in ministry for four decades.

Prestonwood Baptist Church Pastor Dr. Jack Graham delivered a message via his blog to all the men of Collin County and surrounding areas.

We all need to be challenged, Graham said. We all need to be encouraged; we all need to be fed.

Prestonwood annually does its part in spiritually feeding all men of the Metroplex by hosting the Prestonwood Mens Conference at the church. This years event will take place Friday and Saturday and, as always, will challenge men to put God first in their lives.

The conference will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and continue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. This years theme, in an effort to put God first, will be taken from the popular website I Am Second.

The purpose is to challenge men to be the spiritual leader God called them to be, wherever Gods place is for them in the community, said David Shivers, minister of men and evangelism at Prestonwood. Were very pleased and excited about the conference this year.

Shivers said the conference has been held for more than a decade, but this years event will feature a twist of sorts. Instead of one primary speaker, the conference will have four: Graham, Dr. James Merritt, Dr. Tom Mullins and Tullian Tchividjian (pronounced tuh-VID-jee-en). Graham, a two-term former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, has been the pastor at Prestonwood since 1989.

Merritt, also former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, is the CEO of Touching Lives Ministry, an internationally televised religious program. Mullins is the senior pastor of Christ Fellowship in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Tchividjian is the senior pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Tchividjian also is the grandson of renowned evangelist Billy Graham. All four speakers, in addition, are established authors.

Its a totally different format from what our men are used to, Shivers said, but were trying to make it bigger than normal. Our speakers are all great pastors. Theyre godly men who are gifted communicators of the Bible.

Along with the speakers, the conference will include special guest testimonials from several well-known individuals. Former SMU star and ESPN college football analyst Craig James, Texas Rangers outfielder David Murphy and former NFL cornerback Scott Turner will be in attendance. Murphy and Turner are members of Prestonwood.

In addition, the men in attendance will be treated to video testimonials from Dallas Cowboys pro-bowlers Tony Romo and Jason Witten. Both Romo and Witten play basketball at Prestonwood during the offseason.

Its a treat to have those guys come out and show their desire to honor God, Shivers said. They do it not only on the gridiron but also with their families and with their teammates in the locker room.

In years past, the event has drawn anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 men. This years event is expected to bring close to 3,000. Registration is $25 until Friday and $35 onsite.
